The Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913 as a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. The first location was the Dana Street Primary School, and the first principal was Albert W. Steane. In 1921 a custom built building was erected on the grounds of the Ballarat School of Mines. A number of the students enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces (AIF) during 1913, 1914. They were Robert Borradale, Albert Burge, Howard Bennett, Norman Carmichael, Reginald Crick, Herbert Collins, Frances Davis, Arthur Dixon, Frank Edwards, George Gilbert and Sydney Townsend. Frances Davis was killed while serving. Those who enlisted have been remembered with an Honour Board with their names. This is at SMB.Book is charcoal blue cloth on hard cover with red leather spine and corners. End papers are brown/grey "stone" patterned thick gloss paper. Name of school and type of book stamped on gold on the spine - REGISTER, BALLARAT JUNIOR TECHNICAL SCHOOL" It is the first Ballarat Junior Technical School Roll Book. The book includes handwritten names, age, date of birth, address, school last attended, grade, qualifications, date of entry, cause, results and remarks. Before her marriage to Ron Kirner, Joan Hood taught at the Ballarat Girls' Junior Technical School in the late 1950s. The Girls' school was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. After entering politics Joan Kirner was Minister for Education (1988) and Premier of Victoria (1990 to 1992). In 1992 Premier of Victoria Joan Kirner visited her former workplace to officially open and name four new facilities, marking stage 2 of the school's State Works and Services Development Project. Honoured in the naming ceremony was the late Albert Steane, the late Kenneth Fleckoe and Mr Jack Barker, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. The fourth facility was the recently opened carpentry and joinery complex. Mrs Kirner said naming the building in honour of the three men would act as a continual reminder of their contribution to education in Australia and what they have passed on to future generations. She said the Government and the State Training Board saw the college as not only one that was most important to Victoria but also nationally and internationally. The Ballarat-based firm, J Chatham and Co, serviced the Hotel Industry in Victoria, particularly Victoria’s Wimmera and Western Districts. Established by Jack { John} Chatham in 1956, The business was based at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat. As a regional hotel and motel broking specialist, he worked closely with other Ballarat businesses, including the Ballarat Brewery. On Jack's death in 1967, the business was taken over by his son, Philip, and renamed J Chatham Pty Ltd. The business continued to grow. Chatham House, the building the business operated from, and subsequently purchased and named, at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat still stands today. In the 1970's a Melbourne branch also opened in Dudley St, Nth Melbourne, In the 1980s the Melbourne branch, J Chatham and Daunt Pty Ltd, operated from 205 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, a few blocks west of the Carlton United Brewery. Philip's son, Andrew, joined the business, then called J Chatham, Daunt and Foley Pty Ltd., in the late 1980s. The business at this time operated from a terrace house [?Bouverie Street] Carlton near Grattan St. By 2005, the Daunt and Foley partnership had dissolved. Philip predeceased his wife, Elizabeth Chatham (nee Holmes), a Director of the Company in 2001. His share of the business was inherited by Andrew. Elizabeth died in 2005 and the business was sold in 2006. Walter Sheldrick, a butcher and publican, established the Warrnambool New Brewery at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets in 1868 as a company. The business was known as Sheldrick and Co. and after Walter Sheldrick’s death his son, Richard, managed the company until his death in 1893. In 1894 the business was sold to John McGee and Company until this firm sold to the Ballarat, Melbourne, Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries in 1922. This Pale Ale bottle, therefore, was bottled before 1922.This bottle is of considerable significance as it is one of the last products of a prominent brewery in Warrnambool and is now nearly 100 years oldThis is a brown-coloured glass beer bottle with a long neck and no stopperOn oval shaped paper label ‘Sparkling Pale Ale, Sheldrick and Co. This cask bung came from the brewery of Sheldrick and Co. The New Brewery (Warrnambool), founded by Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price as partners in a company, was situated at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets. It was known as Sheldrick and Co. and operated from 1868 to 1922 with John McGee and Company running the business after 1894. In 1922 the business was sold to Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries. The casks, used for wine and spirits, were in 1892 cleaned by steam and a lifting device was used to transport the casks from the cellars to the delivery wagons. This is a most significant item as one with a clear provenance and used in the brewery business of Sheldrick and Co., a major industry in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is an example of the equipment use in the brewery business more than a 100 years ago. This is circular cask bung or stopper with the outer shell made of brass and the stopper insert made of cork. This bottle was found under a building some years ago (Hand’s tobacconist shop, Liebig Street, Warrnambool). It is believed to be a beer bottle from the Warrnambool brewery of Sheldrick and Co. In 1868 Walter Sheldrick formed a company and established the New Brewery at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets, Warrnambool. Two of the original directors, Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price, took over the business under the title of Sheldrick and Co. When Walter Sheldrick died in 1876 Richard Sheldrick succeeded his father in the business. In the early 1890s Richard Sheldrick sold out and by 1892 a group of Warrnambool businessmen was operating the brewery. In 1894 it was sold to William McGee and Company and in 1922 the brewery closed when the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries took over the business.This bottle is of interest as an example of a beer bottle from Sheldrick’s New Brewery. This brewery was prominent in Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a green glass beer bottle with a rounded body and a heavily indented base producing an inverted hump inside the bottom of the bottle. The neck is rounded with a moulded glass top. This corkscrew has obviously been used as a promotional handout for clients of James McGee and Co. Information on this firm has been difficult to find but there was a well-known commercial traveller, James McGee, resident in the Warrnambool district at the end of the 19th century and it is known that his sons headed a company, James McGee and Co. that bought Sheldrick’s New Brewery in Timor Street, Warrnambool, in 1894. This brewery had been founded in 1868. In 1922 the McGee company sold the goodwill of the Warrnambool brewery to the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-Operative and Carlton and United Breweries and the local brewery closed. No information has been found on Ballangarrock Whisky.This corkscrew is an important souvenir of the last few years of operations at the Warrnambool New Brewery in Timor Street. This business had operated in Warrnambool for over 50 years.This is a metal corkscrew with a wooden handle. There is black printing on the handle. This printing is faded in parts. In 1868, Walter Sheldrick, a Warrnambool butcher, established a company to operate the Warrnambool New Brewery (at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets).
