The men in this photograph are not wearing any protective clothing. Their visibility to other firefighters is severely reduced by smoke. This photo is a snap shot in time when Occupational Health and Safety Legislation was in its infancy stage.This photograph details the fire prevention activities in the Victorian Alps under the management of the SEC Victoria. The level of undergrowth within the Australian bush needs to be kept under control to avoid the possibility of lightning strikes (during summer storms) igniting dry forests resulting in a major bush fire. Controlled fires within alpine regions are required not only to reduce the level of dry undergrowth but also to provide those various plant species requiring fire for regenerate. These were necessary ...The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from 1938 to 1961. The Scheme included three power stations, dams, tunnels and was becoming a popular tourist destination with Falls Creek Ski field within its boundaries.This leaflet was published by the SECV to ensure all visitors to the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme were made aware of safety measures with regard to their driving and to bush fires. These were necessary as the area was unique with driving on mountainous roads, changeable and extreme weather and the threat of bush fires. The gatehouse existed during construction, when the SECV was in charge, as a restriction to entry to the Scheme for SECV workers and those with permission to enter. The SECV controlled the area so in case of accident, the SECV was the body to contact not eg. the police.Small white and green leaflet made from one sheet of glossy paper and folded in half. Front cover has the title in the middle, the SECV emblem at the centre top and across the bottom is a message to read the inside pages which are safety messages for driving and bush fires. Kurth ...Professor Ernest Edgar Kurth of the University of Tasmania, invented a faster, simpler and cleaner way to produce charcoal on a continuous basis during the second world war. The charcoal was used to produce a combustible gas in motor cars, as a substitute for petrol, which was heavily rationed. The first batch of charcoal was produced in February 1942 and continued until the end of the war. Wood from stringybark trees was cut into lengths and fed into a kiln which converted it into charcoal. The Kiln is located on Beenak Road, 7km north of Gembrook. It has great historical significance, particularly as an alternative supplier of fuel during the second world war. It is a State Registered facility, managed by the Friends of Kirth Kiln and the park is managed by Parks Victoria Green soft covered book of 150 pages, with a photo of 2 men and a boy out in the bush with 3 fires burning.Contains a Prelude about Ernest Edgar Kurth written by Alfred Klink (2013) and a Foreward by John Sullivan (Heritage Officer of Parks Victoria). This method was used by the original inhabitants (Aborigines) as limited scrub fires were used to flush game and bird population for eating with the side benefit to those plants requiring that fire for regeneration.This black and white photograph shows an Alpine Fire Prevention technique of "burning off" low levels of scrub. ... major bush fires in the district and the fire came within 300... major bush fires in the district and the fire came within 300 ...The Committee of Management held monthly meetings and "the members were conscientious in their attendance". 1938/1939 were busy years for the Orbost Hospital as there was a serious outbreak of poliomyelitis and some cases had to be sent on to Sale. There was also pressure from Dr Nettleton to begin a garbage collection in the town to clean up the town As the polio epidemic abated, diptheria took over and Dr Nettleton urged the shire to fund a further free immunisation campaign. In February, 1939t here were major bush fires in the district and the fire came within 300 yards of the Orbost Hospital. Orbost is an isolated town and the importance of the medical service in the community is immense. Accompanying text by Charles - 'This is the end facing Ernie's old house which was burnt down last year. There is also the remains of the old well. The old smoke house used to be down there also. All these things have disappeared a long time ago. The house is the only thing that remains of the Schwerkolt property. The wine cellars and other buildings fell down years ago after the bush fires burnt the wooden supports. You will notice the toilet has about 3 boards off the top.
