Easter 1936. Mavis and I took turns at the wheel.. cost was unbelievable abour 7 pounds plus a few meals (bed and breakfast was 5/- only) petrol about //1/3d 1/2er gallon. William Evans, being born in Anglesea, Wales, in 1829, migrated to Australia in 1857. He was appointed Assistant Lighthouse Keeper at Cape Otway Lighthouse in 1858, and married Catherine Carmody on the 14 May,1860. William and Catherine spent 22 years at Cape Otway. From this union, until August 1998, eight generations of children were recorded. James Robbins and Mary Jane Ellery were married on 23 April, 1829, in Stoke Lane, St Michael, Somerset, and had six children. James died aged 51 on 7 December, 1845. Mary married again to John Boyce less than twelve months later, and they had a further three children. John and Mary Boyce (Robbins nee Ellery) came to Port Adelaide, South Australia, on the "Flora Kerr" on the 4 March, 1855, with eight of their nine children. Hannah Robbins stayed in England, probably married. On the same ship another daughter, Ann Robbins, came out with her husband, John Treasure, who had already been to Australia searching for gold. John Nesbeit Preston was born on 5 October 1897 in Gisbourne, New Zealand. He served in the RAN from 1919 to 1942. He served on the Stuart (Vendetta) from 1941 - 1943.This diary is a significant primary source detailing the daily life of J.N. On 15 January 1964 the Shire of Otway was going to poll its ratepayers about a loan required to build temporary municipal workshops and a Shire Engineer's office in the Apollo Bay Riding. This led to a number of objections at public meetings in the west and central ridings, such that a Committee of protest was formed, with a nominated Chairman, Secretary and members, to put to ratepayers their considered point-of-view of disapproval. After drafts the Committee produced a printed flyer for distribution to ratepayers summarising the Committee's position. The Committee knew and agreed with a Council Sub-Committee's recommendation to Council of a new, adequate building on one site of suitable size. However, this did not happen. Instead Council moved for loans for temporary renovations of existing buildings. This the Committee objected to believing that Council must decide on a final location before any consideration is given to borrowing money for temporary repairs. The avenue was planted on the 15th September 1917 as a mark of admiration for the men of Corindhap who had left to fight in the Great War." Bilson and Co. operated a general store in Murray Street, Colac with its history dating from 1884 to 1955. Originally founded by the Tulloh family it became known as Bilsons after 1889 when Franklin Bilson came from Allansford where he had operated a general store. Bilsons store became one of the largest stores in country Victoria. In 1952 Bilsons merged with Foy and Gibsons. and in 1955 the Foy Bilson business was sold. This label is of interest firstly because it is a memento of Bilson's stores an important 20th century business in country Victoria and secondly because Franklin Bilson and his wife, Fanny, both have their place in Warrnambool's history.Rectangular white label with dark blue text and some scroll decoration. From late in 1960 VR took what were the first definite steps to close the Colac-Beech Forest line. 1,101 tonnes of freight per year flowed from Colac to Beech Forest because of increasing competition from the roads. From 1 July 1960 onwards, when pulpwood (hardwood) stopped being shipped from Beech Forest, a maximum of only 7,000 tonnes/year would be shipped to Colac. Including special trips passenger revenue earned a little more than $200 per annum. The issue of second-hand sleepers stopped entirely and the two track gangs only patrolled the track and tightened loose bolts. The line did not earn its way and on 4 November 1960 it was recommended that services over the narrow gauge line be discontinued.The rear of a goods train from Colac arrives at Beech Forest on 9 August 1961.
