Frederick Lloyd CARLETON enlisted on 24.10.1939 No VX1555 age 33 Years. He was posted to 2/6th Div Signals but was discharged Medically unfit on 20.1.1940. He then re enlisted on 1.7.1940 No VX33476, posted to 2/23rd Bn 20.8.1940, promoted L/Cpl 14.9.1940, embarked for the Middle East 16.11.1940, promoted to Cpl 18.12.1940, Sgt 14.12.1941, embarked for Australia 31.4.1943 and disembarked Melb 25.2.1943. In the Middle East he was one of 10 to receive a Commander in Chiefs Commendation during Sept 1941. Served in the Tobruk Seige , Lebanon and El Alamein. He met and married a British Army Nursing sister in Palestine 1942. Hospitalised in Seymour Vic with Furuncles. Embarked for Milne Bay from Cairns and disembarked 4.8.1943, embarked 31.1.1944 (unclear) and disembarked 7.2.1944 (unclear), hospital with Malaria 2.6.1944. He served in the Seige of Tobruk and El Alamein where he was the Commanding Officer of his Battalion during its early days. He was WIA twice , at Tobruk then Alamein losing his left leg. At discharge from the Army on 7.1.47 he was a Major in 2/24th Aust Infantry Battalion. This round, bronze memorial plaque was presented to the family of Private Richard Evans Harkness, service number 3426, of the 37th Battalion, (8th Reinforcements) who was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 12th August, 1918. Colloquially known as 'Dead Man's Penny' or 'King's Penny', this plaque was given to the next of kin of service personnel who died on active service in WW1. 1914-1918 Memorial Plaque In early 1920 it was announced that the next-of-kin of all Australian servicemen and women whose deaths were attributable to the First World War would receive a memorial plaque and scroll "as a solace for bereavement and as a memento". The memorial plaques were not uniquely Australian. In fact they were designed and produced in Britain and issued to commemorate all those who died as a result of war service from within the British Commonwealth. The idea for the plaques was originally conceived mid-way through the war. In 1917 a competition was announced to obtain a suitable design and 800 entries were eventually received. The winner, Mr. E. Carter Preston of Liverpool, England, was chosen in 1918. He was awarded a prize of 250 pounds. Mr Manning Pike directed the manufacture of the memorial plaques at the Memorial Plaque Factory set up at Acton, London. Some later plaques were also made at the Woolwich Arsenal. The cost of manufacturing so many plaques must have been considerable. Each plaque had the name of the soldier commemorated individually embossed (some were engraved) as part of the design. The full name was given without any indication of rank or honours to show the equality of sacrifice of all those who had lost their lives. The scroll designed to accompany the plaques was of thick paper, headed by the royal coat-of-arms, and bore the following message: "He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those that come after see that his name is not forgotten". Underneath the message the serviceman or woman’s name, rank, honours and unit were written by hand in red ink. Because of the late arrival in Australia of the plaques many scrolls were sent out separately. A message from the King, "I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War", was included with the scroll. The first plaques were distributed in Australia in 1922. Each plaque was sent out from Base Records Office at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne by second-class mail. Approximately 60,000 plaques were issued in Australia. Families of deceased members of the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Army Nursing Service also received plaques and scrolls This plaque is significant because it commemorates the death of an Australian soldier on active service in World War 1. It is representative of some 60,000 issued to next of kin of soldiers killed in World War 1. Although Richard Harness was living at 52 Victoria Street, Abbotsford when enlisted, together with a scroll from the King, it was donated by a Frankston Family.This round, bronze memorial plaque was presented to the family of Australian Army private Richard Evans Harkness, service number 03426, of the 37th battalion, 8th re-inforcement. This item is historically and socially significant because A E Bolger had enlisted at Frankston and is recorded as being the first Frankston soldier to die at Gallipoli. Bolger was wounded and killed during the landing at ANZAC cove on the 27th April 1915. This plaque and medallion was awarded to his family who have subsequently donated them to this collection.This circular, bronze commemorative plaque was presented to the family of Private Arthur Ernest Bolger, who was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27th April, 1915. This limited edition set of four tankards was manufactured by Franklin Mint and was exclusively for RSL members. Each tankard depicts three scenes relating to the particular conflict represented. The tankards are circular and incorporate a handle. Each of these large tankards is made of white glazed porcelain and has a capacity of 0.6 litres. A commemorative booklet about the role of nurses, in particular the nurses of the Australian Army Nursing Service, during WW2. The booklet has a light cardboard cover of buff colour and contains 28 pages. This booklet was published as a fund raiser for the "Centaur" War Nurses Memorial Fund.The booklet is entitled "Lest We Forget" and has the Red Cross symbol surrounded by an olive wreath printed, in colour, on the cover. There is an image of the hospital ship Centaur superimposed on the Red Cross symbol. Beneath the wreath there are the words ""CENTAUR" MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP". The words "AUSTRALIAN ARMY NURSING SERVICE" are printed across the bottom of the cover page and the price was 2/-. -
Conservation VolunteersGallipoli Visitor Welcome Pack 2011, Manufactured and collated for the Australian and New Zealand Governments
Annually since 2006 the Australian Department of Veterans Affairs has invited CVA to arrange a group of volunteers from Australia and New Zealand to travel to Gallipoli as part of the management of the Anzac Day Remembrance event. Announcing the 2011 visit the Commonwealth Minister, Warren Snowdon, said the contribution of volunteers on the ground at Gallipoli is highly valued. “Volunteers are very dedicated. They fund their way there and assist with a range of activities, including site preparation, crowd liaison and the distribution of visitor information packs,” he said. Volunteers appreciate this opportunity to both attend a place significant to many Australians and also to make a contribution to the safe and harmonious running of it. “I would like to thank CVA for the privileged of being involved in the Gallipoli program and would highly recommend it.” Volunteer Jennie, Newcastle NSW Since 2006 CVA group assisted at the ANZAC Day dawn service and at other remembrance The original idea was Garry Snowden's. Garry has a personal interest in WW1. On his second private trip to Gallipoli he noted there was too much litter around the commemorative sites and he had the idea of involving volunteers to play a role in providing a clean environment for visitors. The idea was raised with the Federal Govt (how was this done?). In 2005 there was bad publicity regarding behaviour of visitors and the amount of litter left and the Commonwealth Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) reviewed its management strategy for the event. As an integral part of the strategy CVA was engaged to recruit a group of volunteers who would attend at their own cost, assist the clean up the environs of the main sites prior to Anzac Day while doing orientation and personal sightseeing, and welcome visitors and give them an information pack including a litter bag (see photographs attached. The volunteers do NOT clean up afterwards: that is rightly the work of Turkish contractors. Gallipoli is an iconic site for many Australians and New Zealanders and CVA provides this magnificent opportunity for volunteers to contribute effectively.This is a visitor welcome pack distributed by CVA volunteers to visitors prior to the Anzac Dawn service and other commemorations. ... commemorative service at Diamond Valley Secondary College on 23/4/2015 ...Diamond Valley schools held an ANZAC Day commemorative service at Diamond Valley Secondary College on 23/4/2015. The 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment provided a catafalque party, guest speaker and a display of military memorabilia by the Unit History Room. The medallion was given as a token of appreciation.Bronze coloured 30 mm dia medallion. Obverse - Flaming torch, surrounded by "DIAMOND CREEK SCHOOLS 1915 -2015" Reverse - Monument standing in front of shrubbery. It is mounted on a card which provides a brief story of Australian involvement in WW1, names of Diamond Creek men killed, names of the local schools participating in the ceremony. Medallion and card laminated. -
