The former Police residence and Justice precinct including courthouse and stables) were being renovated for use by the Shire of Eltham. In 1998 the Police Residence was handed over to the Eltham District Historical Society for their use as a Local History Centre. Note that the replica police station to the right of the residence has not been constructed at this stage. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. ELTHAM POLICE QUARTERS & REAR STABLE (FORMER), is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. The stables are described: "The original single stall brick stables building with loft, built in 1859-60.."These horseshoes were dug up by the owners of the property adjoining the former Eltham Police Station and Court House site behind the stables when working in their garden. Presumably they were discarded adjacent to the stables where the Police horses were kept and over time became covered with soil and other material. Originally built 1859 as the Eltham Police Residence, the Police moved intio new premises in Pryor Street in 1961. It was then occupied by the Eltham Shire Council Department of Parks and Environment from c.1985. In 1959 the Victoria Police purchased this house in Pryor Street to be refurbished as the Eltham Police Station. In 1961 the Police moved out of 728 Main Road and into the Pryor Street building following required modifications to bring it in line with the standards used for Police Stations throughout the State.The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. Members of the Eltham District Historical Society transfer collection items from storage into their new home. Previously occupied by the Parks and Environment Department of Nillumbik Shire Council (L-R: Mark Gillham, Margaret Ball Vice President, Sue Law Immediate Past President, Harry Gilham President) Nillumbik Shire Council Commissioner Vin Heffernan (1996-97) worked with Harry Gilham to obtain use of the former Eltham Shire Parks and Gardens office at 728 Main Road for use by the Society. Harry as a younger man had played in the scrum for Heidelberg Football Club along with Vin's brother who was on the wing.
