The provenance of this badge is unknown. A search on the defence force numbers has been unsuccessful to ascertain the owner of the badge. Ballarat Female Refuge was established in 1867 by a group of 26 Ballarat ladies. The laundry was attached to the Refuge, supposedly to train the women there for domestic work, but by the size of the mangle, this was impossible. Unbearably hot in summer, and freezing cold in winter, the women had to work in the laundry while they were at the Refuge. The Alexandra Babies' Home was adjacent to the Ballarat Female Refuge in Scott's Parade, Ballarat East. The babies from the unmarried mothers at the Refuge remained at the Babies' Home until around the age of three years, when they were usually transferred to the Ballarat Orphanage in Stawell Street, Ballarat East. The Babies' Home was suddenly closed in 1973 under the Hamer Government. This mask was obtained by Charles Quon, probably from Hong Kong, and used by the Young Chinese League in their processions.This mask is significant for its links to the Chinese Young League. The League was formally established on 4 October 1932 to to promote free social intercourse and goodwill among its members and their mutual improvement. Membership was open to all persons, with one or both parents or grandparents born in China. Wives of Chinese members were permitted as members with the same privileges. It was a significant social organisation for Chinese-Australians in Melbourne in the mid to late twentieth century.A costume mask of a female character. Jeanette Perkins was born in 1927 at Ballarat. She attended Alfredton State School and Pleasant Street State School before completing her secondary schooling at Ballarat High School (BHS). During her later years at BHS Perkins decided that she wanted to become a geologist, but was ineligible for university when she failed Leaving Certificate maths. She attended an interview with the principal (Heseltine) at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) and announced that she wanted to be a geologist. Heseltine was, according to Perkins, aghast: he informed her that there had never been a female geologist at SMB and they didn't want one. But Perkins persisted. Only then did Heseltine reluctantly enrol her in the School's Applied Chemistry Course which offered the most geological subjects, moreover, it was the only one he considered available to a 'mere' female. After graduating Perkins was employed as a metallurgical chemist with M.B. Johns Valves, Ballarat. In 1949 she married Alfred Watson. In 1951 Jeanette and Alf Watson moved to Melbourne where she commenced work as a metallurgical chemist at the Maribyrnong Ordnance Factory while studying geology part time: Alf returned to study at the University of Melbourne. Once again, Watson set a precedent by becoming the first female student to study geology part-time at the Melbourne Technical College. Increasing demands brought about by her growing family, she turned to part-time lecturing second and third year stratigraphy and palaeontology at RMIT. In 1957 the Watsons moved to the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine in NW Queensland where he was appointed electrical design engineer. After their return to Melbourne in 1960, Jeanette taught herself to SCUBA dive and quickly developed a passion for the sport and the marine environment. She taught senior science to secondary students for 10 years whilst working towards a Masters degree. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. Denine Moloney made history at the MMBW as the Board’s first female apprentice gardener, at the young age of 16. Denine was part of a team that cultivated and distributed up to 140,000 plants a year from the nursery complex that was housed on Warrigal Road, in Moorabbin. The large trees, shrubs and various other plants were all used in Board beautification projects. At the time, Denine lived with her parents and rode her bicycle to and from work each day while she attended Oakleigh Technical College one day a week as part of her apprenticeship. Denine’s ambition was to become a professional landscape gardener after her apprenticeship was completed, and four years later was in fact appointed as head gardener at Jells Park in 1983. Denine was not the last woman to work as a gardener at the Board, bringing with her two female assistants at Jells Park in caring, maintaining and distributing the Board’s horticulture. This staff newsletter highlights the significant achievement of Denine Moloney, becoming the first female gardener to work at the Board. The back of the photo is inscribed "To dear Lizzie with love and best wishes from Nellie, Xmas 1911" - Lizzie being Elizabeth Ann Shillinglaw, daughter of Phillip and Sarah Shillinglaw born 1879. The woman in the photo appears to be aged approximately 40 years and is dressed and with a hair style typical of the fashion of 1911. This would make her birth year around the early 1870s. The only Nellie present in the family tree as currently understood is Helen (Nellie) Lyon born 1897 who came to Eltham from Mildura with her mother and brothers in 1913. She married Arthur Edward Bird however she is a generation younger and the dates do not fit. The only other known Nell is Ellen May Bird, daughter of George and Janet Bird, born 1892 so she too is a generation too young.
