Article on the history of Ferdinand von Mueller. He arrived in Adelaide in 1847 (had a PhD from Kiel University). He came to Melbourne in 1853 and was appointed the State's first official botanist. He was the first white man to climb Mt Buller and Mt Buffalo. Apart from his activities with the Melbourne Botanical Gardens he was Government Botanist for 43 years.
