Massacre Bay is located on Victoria's Great Ocean Road, and is in the centre of the Bay of Martyrs. The bay consists of 20 m high, red limestone bluffs. Ken Pocock won the 1976 Bendigo Cup. with Chapel Elect A broken leg suffered by Golden Square footballer Ken Pocock, while training with VFL team Collingwood, saw the end of a promising football career, but the start of a highly successful career in harness racing. Ken first worked in Bendigo as a horse and cart delivery driver for Symons dairy and Jeffreys bakery. He learned his craft by working with harness horses for veteran trainers Alf Petherick (Glideaway) and Clarrie Long (Great Dalla). Early in his career Ken had Kaye Lois, and the 1965 Moomba Cup and prolific winner Fosmar. He trained and drove standouts including: Peparkee, Chief Invader (1972 Shepparton Gold Cup) Chapel Elect (Melbourne Pacing Cup, Bendigo Cup), Go Van (Ouyen and 3KZ Cups), Game Oro (two Shepparton and two Kilmore Cups). The champion pacer Royal Gaze won 49 races, 17 seconds, 11 thirds including the Shepparton, Ballarat, Ouyen and A G Hunter Cups. Royal Gaze raced in 3 successive Inter Dominion series, winning 5 heats, and finishing third in Perth in 1974. Ken was also a highly skilled stud-master. He was involved in the planning and building of the ambitious harness racing property B J Lodge at Goornong, and travelled to the USA in the early 1970s with B J Lodge owner Bernie Ahern where they selected and bought champion US pacers Kentucky and Hilarious Way and stood them at stud. Ken HOVENDEN Working at Bendigo Pottery from April 1972 at the age of 17, Ken Hovenden was also involved in the Lillydale Pottery venture. He worked at Cannie Ridge Pottery for a time, exhibiting work there in 1979. Known as a great thrower, his work featured beautifully fitted lids and quantities of mugs of identical size. In the 1980s, he set up his own pottery at Malmsbury and sold his work through Bangles Gallery at Cobargo. From late 1988 to 1997, he worked under the business name Shiloh Pottery in Castlemaine. His work often features a unique gum leaf design on individually thrown work. In this presentation, Ken talks about another book he is writing, involving the Chinese community in the small town of Lyal, between Castlemaine and Heathcote. In 1861, there were more than 24,000 Chinese immigrants on the goldfields of Ararat, Ballarat, Beechworth, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Maryborough. The Chinese were particularly industrious, with techniques that differed widely from the Europeans. This and their physical appearance and fear of the unknown led them to being persecuted in a racist way that would be regarded as untenable today.

Built in 1888, which was 5 years before water reticulation came to Surrey Hills. It originally relied on rainwater and a well (still in existence in 2009) was located near the back door. From 1921 this was the home of Mr Natale and Mrs Ethel May Cerini and their family. It remained in the family until it was sold in May 2015. The Cerinis had 2 daughters - Jocelyn Francesca and Lynette Lorraine . The house passed to Jocelyn after her parents' deaths. Mr Cerini named the house after a property in NSW called 'Goonoogoonoo' where he had worked. It had been named 'Montiere' at a previous time. Natale was an accountant and very active in community affairs, especially after his retirement. The house was originally on a double block. [Additional information: Ken Hall - 2/12/2009] The first owner was A Embling, followed by Mrs L A Campbell. [Ref: Alan Holt property register] A Embling was most likely Austin Henry Chinnock Embling (1867, Ballarat East - 2 OCT 1900), eldest son of Dr Dr William and Elizabeth Embling (née Austin). His wife was Sybil Mary Mildred (MS: Edlin), born in Adelaide, whom Austin Embling married in 1898.
