Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Program, The Arcadions' Wurzel - Flummens, 1934
This is a program for two plays staged by The Arcadians in 1934. This drama group was originally known as the Warrnambool High School Ex-Students’ Dramatic Society and was founded in 1925 by Colonel Langley, the Head Master of Warrnambool High School and his wife, Edmee. The Arcadians drama group was still operating in 1947 and proceeds from the productions went to the Warrnambool High School, funding many school projects including a tennis court, a Senior English prize and Watson Hall. By 1934 a special project was the funding of the ‘Langley Library’. Notable among The Arcadians performers were Colonel George Langley (in the early years of the group), Horace Jones, an English teacher at the school, Syb Carpenter, Bill Earle, Mary and Ron Mack and Nancy Humm. This programme is of particular interest as an example of the plays staged by the well-known Warrnambool drama group, The Arcadians.This is a programme made of two sheets of green paper folded in two to make eight pages. This is a programme for a concert put on by the Warrnambool High School students in 1927. The concert included choral items, folk dancing, a gymnasium display and two one-act plays. Warrnambool High School was established in 1907 and merged with Warrnambool North Technical School in the 1990s to form Warrnambool College. One of the performers in this concert was the Head Teacher of Warrnambool High School, Colonel George Langley. This programme is of interest as an example of the entertainment offered in Warrnambool in the 1920s by a local group. This is a one-page pink sheet of paper with black printing. This is a Rose's Australia stereocard of Morningside. Built c1875, Morningside was the residence of John and Catherine D'Alton, it was located on site of present (2010) Colonial Motor Inn. c1900 it was owned by Langley family and was taking in paying guests. In 1909 it was leased by James and Grace D'Alton who continued to run a small guest house. In the late 1920's a small building was erected to serve as PO and telephone exchange. C1980 the guest house closed. In 1982 Morningside was demolished.A computer print of a State Library of Victoria Catalogue entry for a stereograph card. Shelford Girls' Grammar
Tie Pin, Stokes, 1922-1955
This tie pin features the school crest used by Shelford Girls Grammar during the period 1922-1955 when the school was known as a Church of England Girls Grammar School. The school was closely linked to St Mary's Church of England, Glen Eira Rd, Caulfield, Victoria. The badge was designed by Canon Langley and Mr. W.E.L. Wears in 1922 when the school was taken over by the Church of England. The motto means "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God."This tie pin is representative of tie pins worn by all students at Shelford C.E.G.G.S during the period 1922-1955. It forms an official part of the school uniform at that time. Metal tie pin featuring the crest of Shelford Church of England Grammar School. The crest is silver and dark royal blue and features a large silver "S" in the centre of a blue oval. The oval features the words "Querite Primo Regnum Dei. St Mary's C of E". Priest and Mrs. Priest, and Rev. H.B. Macartney and Mrs. Macartney. Two copies of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glen Eira Road Caulfield. Souvenir record of 60 years 1858-1918. Includes history of the wooden church, names of the early parishioners, the first, third and fourth incumbencies, the jubilee school, Sunday school, choir and organ, daughter churches and St. Mary’s a mission parish, and the last decade from 1908 to 1918. It also has a list of organisations and office bearers. Manila book has all photos omitted. There are twelve photos including St. Mary’s choir, a group of St. Mary’s Sunday school teachers, missionaries, curate, organist and verger, Rev. H.T. Langley and Mrs. Langley. Black and white photograph of sign describing the Bishop's Chair. Sign reads ' This chair was the original Bishop's Throne (Cathedra) from All Saints Old Cathedral used by the first Bishop of Bendigo (Henry Langley) when the diocese was created in 1901. Subsequently it was presented to Bishop Donald Baker upon his retirement to become Principal of Ridley College, Parkville, Melbourne. It has been presented to the R.H.S.V. Bendigo Branch by the cathedral chapter as an historic relic of that early period in Anglican Church life in Bendigo.topic -
