Undated anecdotes by an anonymous author (by the handwriting it was Legatee Frank Doolan) about Melbourne Legacy changeover dinners at the Federal Hotel on the corner of Collins and King Streets. These were apparently convivial affairs and the writer shares his memories of three occasions. The first occasion was an impromptu and riotous performance by Legatees (organised by Pat Hanna) after the dinner of the First World War ballad 'Roses of Picardy'. The second occasion concerned a group of 'exuberant' Legatees walking down Collins Street after dinner who spotted Harry Lauder [1870-1950], the famous Scottish comedian, in a taxi which was held up at a street crossing'. They prevailed on him to speak at the Legacy luncheon the following Tuesday. Lauder's subsequent speech at the luncheon not only amused the listeners with his humour, but also reduced them to sadness with an account of how his son had been killed in action in France. The third story refers to 'a vacant hansom cab pulled up in Collins St as the diners were departing', which induced one Legatee to fulfil a lifelong ambition by persuading the cabby to let him drive the cab for the princely sum of one pound. The dinner took place at the Town Hall, Melbourne, and was attended by the Governor, Sir Rohan Delacombe, the Hon. Don Chipp, M.P., the Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolt, and the Lord Archbishop of Melbourne, The Most Reverend F. Woods. The insert has information for guests and is indicative of traffic movement on Swanston Street at the time. The document was found with other papers of President D.J. Simonson who would have been one of the guests since it took place during his presidency. This photo was published in the Answer in August 1994. The President in 1976 was Eric Baker. He mentioned a restructure of Junior Legacy and encouraged new presidents to participate in Junior Legatee functions. The presidential year ran from March to the following February. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. Story by Cdr Ashley Brown, officer of the watch about an attack by Japanese aircraft on the HMAS Austrlia May 7, 1942. Also an account of an accidental bombing of the ship by the United States Airforce. It was part of a series of articles called 'The War I saw' published in the Herald Sun newspaper. Date unknown. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00830-00837). So it is assumed that Cdr Ashley-Brown was approached to speak at a Legacy function. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. 30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service. This is the Minute book of the Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club, from February 1983 - October 1993, detailing the activities and decisions of the ILLC. The Intermediate Legacy Club was established by Junior Legatees who had outgrown the junior activities. Initially just males but later the Intermediate Ladies also formed a club. From this book it appears to have functioned from at least 1953 to 1990. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. A breakdown of amounts raised and from whom the funds were raised.
