Photograph taken in 1990 of a white marble memorial to Samuel and Annie Lewers. The memorial was erected by the congregation in 1897 at St Paul's Church of England, Linton. Samuel Lewers was the first manager of the Linton branch of the Bank of NSW, a Justice of the Peace, and first President of Shire of Grenville. The entire Lewers family was deeply involved in church life, Samuel Lewers having played a prominent role in raising money to build the church. Samuel Lewers died in 1895 and the memorial was dedicated on 15.03.1897. The planting of the avenue of Lombardi Poplars was initiated by Mrs Joy Gould and the trees were planted by workers of the Gould Mill. The intention was for the avenue to extend from Marysville to Buxton. However, this was never fully realised. In Autumn the trees turn a brilliant yellow and are a major tourist attraction. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. This is a Warrnambool souvenir item made about the 1940s. It features the Warrnambool War Memorial which is a Warrnambool landmark popular with the makers of souvenir items for sale to local residents and tourists to the city. The War Memorial was originally designed as a memorial to the local soldiers who enlisted and died during World War One. It was built in 1924 and first used for an official function in 1925. A World War Two memorial section added was added in the 1950s. These items are of interest as examples of the souvenirs made to sell to tourists sixty years ago. The items were made of good quality bone china. The Warrnambool War Memorial still features today on some items sold as souvenirs of the City.This is a white bone china cup and saucer set - a Warrnambool souvenir piece. It has a black and white image of the Warrnambool War Memorial on the side of the cup and on the base of the saucer. There is gilding on the edges of the cup and its handle and on the saucer. The base of both items has a British Crown symbol on it. The War Memorial was constructed in 1925 on Merri Street at the South side of Liebig St. It was constructed to commemorate the soldiers of WW1. It is constructed of red granite and the Angel is carved in marble. Adjacent to it is the RSL clubrooms.The Warrnambool War Memorial is a significant space commemorating a significant event and situated in one of the most prominent sites within the city. The Rotary Club of Sunbury installed the memorial garden in Sunbury Cemetery in April 2014. The garden is in memory of the former inmates at the Sunbury Asylum and Industrial School who were buried in unmarked graves in the cemetery. The photograph is looking down the Children's Memorial walk and is taken from the rotunda in the Sunbury Cemetery. After the erection of the Children's memorial, the Sunbury Family History Society and the Sunbury & District Heritage Association with support from HumCity Council compiled a list of burials of 2000 former Sunbury Asylum inmates who were buried in unmarked graves within the Cemetery. Their names are listed on metal display boards that are attached to the inside walls of the rotunda.The rotunda in Sunbury cemetery is now a memorial to the many unfortunate Asylum inmates who were buried in unmarked graves there.
