Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grasmere area. This receipt is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society that is connected to the establishment of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the many minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is an 1899 receipt for William Robinson upon payment of six shillings and three pence, being part payment for shares in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The buff-coloured paper has black printing and black-ink handwriting. There are two stamps – one is the stamp of ‘H.S.Dickson’ and the other is the stamp of the ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company, No Liability’. The certificate has silver fish damage at the top and the right-hand side‘May 30th 1899, Received from Mr Wm. Robinson the sum of six shillings and three pence, being the amount of 5th call of 1½ per share, due on 50 shares, nos. 12651/12700 in the above company, H.S. This trophy has been presented to the Warrnambool & District Football League by the South Warrnambool Football Club. This latter club still plays in the Hampden Football League and dates back to the 1880s and possibly beyond and has always been a traditional rival of the Warrnambool Football Club. West End Football Club dates back to the 1890s and joined with the Allansford Football Club in the 1960s to form the West End Allansford team. In 2001 the name ‘West End’ was dropped from the club’s name. Russells Creek Football Club was established in 1931 and still plays in the Warrnambool & District Football League which dates back to the early 1900sThis football trophy is of interest as it comes from the mid 20th century and concerns two local Warrnambool football clubs still existing today and one club that no longer exists.This is a wooden trophy in the shape of a shield. It has a silver scroll on the top and a silver heart shape in the middle. There is a cord on the back of the shield attached by metal hooks for hanging purposes. This map of the township of Caramut was produced in 1938 but shows the original land owners of each town allotment and of the surrounding area. The size of all the allotments and the date of the original purchase are also shown. Caramut is a Victorian Western District town on Mustons Creek on the Hamilton Highway 48 kilometres from Warrnambool. This map was used by Rolf Crawley when he was the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The annotations on the map have probably been made by Rolf Crawley as they refer to the records and letter books of his father, John William Crawley, Junior (Shire of Warrnambool Engineer 1895 to 1935). Both Rolf Crawley and his father, John had private businesses as architects, surveyors and engineers and the map could have been used in connection with both their official Shire duties and their private businesses. The last owner of the map was the surveyor, Michael Hand who took over the business of Rolf Crawley in the late 1960s. This map is of great interest firstly because it has all the historical details of the land first purchased in the town of Caramut and area and secondly because it came from the office of Rolf Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. This is a buff-coloured paper map with a cloth backing. The map details are in black and white print. This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. George Eddington arrived in Australia in 1839 and named and established property in 1841 calling the property Ballangeich after a Pass near his home town of Stirling in Scotland. It is situated 151 miles west of Melbourne and to the south of Mortlake and was originally part of the Mortlake shire, which was proclaimed 26th Jan 1864. Nearest streams are the Hopkins Riverand Lyall and Drysdale creek running through good agricultural land. This map relates to the breaking up of large runs which the Victorian government enabled through selection acts of the 1860's. The previously larger runs which were mainly cattle and sheep based were now more open to closer settlement and a greater variety in farming.The lots range in size from approximately 50 acres to around 600 acres.Some areas are set aside for reserves. By 1886 the population of Ballangeich had grown to around 600 with an hotel, three state schools and a church.Tri weekly coaches ran to Colac, Warrnambool and Camperdown providing access to supplies mail and communication. This booklet is a 1932 catalogue of the Floral Farm in Warrnambool. It was established by Charles Allen Jukes who had first opened a plant nursery at Cudgee on the banks of the Cudgee Creek. Early in the 20th century the nursery, the Floral Farm, was re-located to East Warrnambool with the boundary of the property extending along Raglan Parade, Flaxman and Bostock Streets. . A very high paling fence, topped with vertical slats was erected around the property. The Floral Farm continued for some time (with Charles Allen Jukes dying in 1934) and the nursery land was sub-divided for housing. Charles Allen Jukes’ parents, Alfred and Margaret came to Warrnambool in 1856, with Alfred setting up a law business and at one time being the honorary Town Clerk of Warrnambool. This booklet is of historical interest as it is a catalogue of the plants and seedlings available in the early 1930s from the Jukes Floral Farm in East Warrnambool. The parents of the Floral Farm business, Alfred and Margaret Jukes, were pioneer settlers in Warrnambool.This is a booklet of 40 pages. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. The building at 94 Merri St is amongst the earliest buildings in Warrnambool. It was possibly constructed before 1854 and maybe as early as 1848. The original building consisted of four main rooms under a hip roof. The outer walls were masonry , apparently rubble The Heritage Council indcate that on the balance of probabilities this was the general store of Richard Osbourne and John Moffat Chisholm built in 1847-48.The building at 94 Merri Street had historical and architectural significance to the state of Victoria. It was a rare example of surviving, pre separation building with associated interest in its materials and components It is associated with Richard Osbourne who founded the Warrnambool Examiner(1851_1889) and the town’s first historian. Architecturally, the significance of the house lay in the hand -wrought timber framing. All the major timbers in this building had been hand sawn. The Gold rush of the 1850’s saw this process mechanised. A kitchen fireplace in the rear skillion included a large block of Merri Creek Mudstone, a combination of “tufa” and clay that was used in the Warrnambool District as an excellent substitute for fire bricks. The house was demolished in 2011 and items of significance were salvaged, this brick being one. While some bricks were imported, there is evidence that there were a number of brick burning businesses in operation around this time. However it is difficult to ascertain to which group this brick belongs. Red clay rectangular brick.
