Women preserved fruits to make jams, jellies, marmalade, pickles by bottling and canning as part of their housework duties. Recipes were published in Women's magazines such as 'Home Beautiful'.The women whose husbands worked on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme were not permitted to work for the SECV, the expectation, at the time, being to work at home as mothers and housewives. This book describes one of their 'duties'.Printed 26 pages stapled together with 2 staples reinforced by machine stitching. The front cover is missing. This bottle probably held sauce. The manufacturer Jonathan Reeve Pty Ltd began production of sauces and pickles in Ballarat from 1915 until 1930 when the company became insolvent. The type of A G M inscription dates the bottle to the period 1922 to 1929. The Ballarat Junior Technical School was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. The Recipe Book was produced by the Mothers' Club. Recipes were divided into sections: Soups, Savouries, Meat dishes, Desserts, Tea Cakes and Loaves, Biscuits and Slices, Cakes, Jams, Pickles and Sauces, Miscellaneous. There were Catering Hints and Handy Tips included. Booklet cost 40 cents.Yellow soft covered recipe book. Used as a pickle bottle by Mary Gilbert, local historian and Orbost high school teacher. . Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert, and had seven sisters and one brother. Four siblings died at a young age. .She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community.Mary Gilbert, B.E.M. was devoted to Orbost. She taught in Orbost for 40 years. She fostered the Orbost Historical Society and initiated the establishment of the Orbost Museum.Cut glass square shaped bottle with lid (202.2). The glazed stoneware pot is an oyster jar made by Powell potteries, Bristol, probably between 1860 and 1880. Pickled oysters were a regular food of the poor in England in the 19thc. Sam Weller, Charles Dickens’ character in Pickwick Papers (1836-37) commented that ‘Poverty and oysters always seen to go together’. In England, pickling oysters for transport to inland towns and long voyages became an industry. The jar was found in sand near the jetty in 1999.Whatever their provenance, they have an association with an event or activity on Gabo Island and for this reason have second level contributory significance for their potential to yield information relating to the cultural history of the lightstation.Ceramic jar. Squat shape, body of jar is cream coloured. Spots of mildew on side. The jar has a pronounced lip, short neck, sloping shoulders and rounded body. In 1906, the Anglo-Australian Brewery Company had purchased the Spring Creek brewery after the death of Frederick Allen. A.A. Billson, M.L.A., by then a director of Anglo-Australian Brewery, then converted the premises into a jam and fruit preserving works. The Beechworth District Jam, Pickle and Fruit Preserving Company Ltd started fruit preserving in 1907. In 1912, the jam works was sold to a Melbourne company, who traded as S.S. Jam Co./S.S.
