A tankard mug that was produced for Legacy to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It is unknown how many of these mugs were made. It is unlikely they were for fundraising. Perhaps just for Legatees to keep. Also found reference to it in a newspaper article published 7 December 1953. The article mentions: Two hundred members and visitors who attended the 30th annual dinner of the Legacy Club in Union House on Saturday night received a pleasant surprise. Each person at the dinner was given a Coronation pint tankard with a figure of the Queen's head on it. The 'surprise' came from a Legatee - Mr H Greenway - a Blackburn pottery manufacturer. This ceramic tankard mug was produced for Melbourne Legacy to honour their Patron. The Patron of Legacy is usually the Governor of Victoria, since the very early days of Legacy. It appears to be taken from a photo of General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, DSO, KStJ., who was Governor of Victoria from 1949. The date made is unknown but it believed to be early 1950s. Similar mugs were produced to honour Legatees Stan Savige and Syd Birrell and were estimated to have been produced in late 1940's or early 1950s. A similar one was made for the Queen's coronation in 1953. A silver plated cup with five leaf clover and small flower in in the middle, as well as handles with engraved leaves. Inscribed on the mug is: 2nd World Blind Bowls Tournament. G. Hoppitt. When Clarrie Hoppitt attended a demonstration of blind bowling, he immediately offered his services to teach blind people how to play. This mug was produced to commemorate the coronation of George VI and his wife, Elizabeth, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on Wednesday 12 May 1937. On 26th April 1923 (as Duke of York) Prince Albert married in Westminster Abbey to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later to become The Queen Mother). Prince Albert, Duke of York, was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary and was born on 14th December 1895 on the Sandringham estate. On the abdication of his brother Edward VIII in December 1936 he was proclaimed King and took one of his middle name, George, on succeeding to the throne.
