The original Salvation Army Barracks is now at the rear of the present Citadel a red brick building. Stawell Corps was opened in the year 1884 in the month of May. The first meeting was conducted in a Church but afterwards the old market (area present Library) was secured for meetings. Captain Furbur and Lieutenant Quick were the first officers appointed. These photographs of the Shire Hall, Longfield Street Stawell. This building has had many changes since 1866. Ronald Campbell, the Shire's second president laid the foundation of the hall on 28th April 1866. The contractors were Hutchings and Delbridge. The first Hall and office were the front part of the existing building. These rooms consisted of two 18 ft square rooms with an entrance hall separating them. The facade was almost the same as it is today. The building cost 502 pounds. Black and white photograph of a brick building which has been cement rendered with a parapet on top. The front of the building has 2 arched windows and arched entrance door. A glass notice board to the right of the door. Shire Hall 1866 is written on the top front of the building. Many small flower pots line either side of the front entrance with a flag post in the lawn on the left. stawell -

The post card also shows the changes in vegetation around the building. In front of the two arched front windows of the building are two tall Dracaena's possible planted in c 1890's. The decorative fence was not in very early photographs of the building but appears in photographs around c 1890. Erected 1875. Telegraph pole and streetlamp in foreground. Akins store visible at right of photo. The building has 3 arched doors & 6 arched windows on the ground floor and 8 square windows on the top story. Two chimneys on the roof and a wrought iron square fence on the roof. The outside of the building has not changed while the interior has been remodelled several times. The early Postmasters and their families lived upstairs. The main room originally included the Telegraph office where operators worked at machines, sending and receiving Morse code messages. Later alterations were made for a telephone switchboard room downstairs, with trunk line equipment upstairs. In 1965 the telephone system was converted to automatic.Black & white photo of a two story building on the corner of Wimmera & Main St. The building the Stawell Post and Telegraph Office. The Stawell Shire Hall building has been added to over the years. Ronald Campbell, the Shires second president laid the foundation stone on 28th April. 1866. Another building was added in 1904, Syme Ward for convalescent patients. In 1933, the facility was replaced by a newly-built hospital in the town of Stawell. In 1934, the Mental Hygiene Department acquired the old Pleasant Creek Hospital site and converted it to accommodate children with disabilities, which became Pleasant Creek Special School. The first residents (18 boys) were admitted in 1937 from Royal Park Depot. At the end of 1937, there were 98 children living at Pleasant Creek. In 1968 the Pleasant Creek Special School was renamed Pleasant Creek Training Centre, caring for people with intellectual disabilities. Document, William Ellis Letters of Administration 1877, 1877
This is an 1877 document, the Letters of Administration in connection with the will and probate of William Ellis, a veterinary surgeon from Wimmera Street, Stawell. He died after an altercation with W. Richards, the landlord of the Post Office Hotel, where he was knocked against the wall of the verandah of the hotel. He left a small estate, with his property valued at under £107. This document is only of interest in that it came from the former legal offices of Mackay Taylor in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. It originally came from Thomas Goodall, a legal clerk in the office of lawyer Ernest Chambers who passed it on to George Mackay, the lawyer in the forerunner firm of Mackay Taylor where it remained until the firm of Mackay Taylor ceased to exist and the buildings were cleaned out. This is a piece of parchment folded and sealed at the bottom edge with a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria. The material in the document is handwritten in black ink. Nothing is known of the deceased, Jane Murray except that she died at the age of 49 and her husband was William Murray, a Stawell saddler. She left an estate to the value of £400. Tait collection: item 4 of 62This document is only of interest in that it came from the former legal offices of Mackay Taylor in Kepler Street, Warrnambool.
