Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. Typically, the fur hat might be purchased from the furrier to match the colour and often the pelt of the coat or stole, rather than from a milliner. Hats, like coats and stoles were often dyed to achieve uniformity of colour. Tastes in the colour of furs also changed over time, so hats, coats and stoles could be updated to match prevailing tastes. Until the 1960s in Australia, there were many furriers, who usually brought from Europe experience in identifying fur types. With the decline in the fur industry, these skills are noticeably scarcer in Australia today.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Jack Dunkin Lutge was born 9/11/21 to John & Millicent Lutge of Elmhurt, Vic. At the age of 13 he joined the church Preaching Band as organist. He was encouraged to consider a call to the ministry of the Methodist Church, and he was ordained in 1950. Parishes were Beaconsfield (Tas.), Deloraine (Tas.), Woomelang, Ballarat, Euroa, Noble Park, Sandringham, West Brunswick. He married Marjorie Shepherd 17/5/1947, and they had a daughter, Meredith. He died in Myrtleford on 31/5/2014.Lutget is standing in ecumenical alb and blue stole c. 1982 at Noble Park where he was acting as relieving minister. Local government for Moorabbin began in 1862 when the area was separated from Brighton with the creation of the Moorabbin Roads Board. This meeting commemorated the centenary of local government in 1962.1862 saw the beginnings of local government in the Moorabbin district when the area was separated from Brighton with the creation of the Moorabbin Roads Board. Moorabbin was declared a shire in 1871 and a city in 1934. While tinkering with boundaries occurred over time, the first major severance from Moorabbin was when the Borough of Sandringham was created in 1917. Three years later, after persistent agitation, on May 27, 1920 Mordialloc, Parkdale and Mentone became part of the new Borough of Mordialloc. With this change the Shire of Moorabbin no longer had authority for land with a frontage to Port Phillip Bay. In 1994 councils across Victoria were amalgamated and the City of Moorabbin was divided between the cities of Kingston and Glen Eira. Muriel Butler stole a black coat and a fox skin fur in Melbourne in January 1918. She was arrested when getting off the train in Ballarat. She was also wanted by the police for circulating valueless cheques. Elvis Evil Eagle (aka The Bodgie Bird) flew up again and sprinkled the powder into the clouds. The rain started filling the gully and the creek flooded into the homestead.
