Piano accordions were one form of music used to entertain families and friends prior to electricity being available.Possibly used by Eric Heider (Tenny) Wittingslow who married Iris Baker of Tawonga as his death notice was stored in the same box as the accordion.Wooden handles at each end, one has a leather strap over it. When pulled out wooden ends are attached to the handles and to a thick 'cardboard'. Then 3 red wire frames with green 'cardboard' covering, then wood, then 3 more red & green, then wood, then 3 more red/green and then another thick 'cardboard' attached to the opposite handle. These are the bellows pulling air in and out. The handle with the strap has a keyboard beside it while the other handle has silver knobs that move in when pressed. One side of its original box reads - "The Dudley' Trade Mark ' Nightingale' Accordeon / No. 8018?One handle has 'Dudley'. The other 'Dudley=Accordion'. The middle section has on the end of each of the 4 parts - in metal:- Trade mark with bird in the middle of a triangle. School sports competitions were held annually with the winning school being acknowledged by being awarded 'the' shield. The shield was usually paid for through donations. It was donated back to be used again and the current winner's name added to the Shield.The names of the school teams indicate that the shield was competed for by the primary schools in the Kiewa Valley. The years are during the 1960s when many of the smaller schools still existed. The shield encouraged sports participation between the local schools and was supported by the local business - the Mount Beauty Co-operative.Wooden shield shaped plaque with large silver plated medallion in the centre surrounded by 12 smaller ones and 2 rectangular sterling silver small ones at the top centre of the shield. This photo is of a ward - probably the female ward, as there a many floral arrangements - of the original hospital at Tawonga. This was situated at the corner of Ryders Lane and Kiewa Valley Highway. The building was transported from Bonegilla where it was originally a part of the Bonegilla Military Hospital. The hospital was opened on 24th September, 1949 with a capacity of 12 beds, but was later increased to 35 beds by enclosing the verandahs on 3 sides of the building. 'Add ons' provided theatre, offices, stores and a nurses home. Construction was commenced by the Hospital and Charities Commission with considerable input from the S.E.C., providing the removal and re-erection of the building, the accommodation for nursing staff and carried all work necessary to make the building operational as a hospital. Up until this time the nearest hospital was at Yackandandah. The hospital remained on this site until 1961 when a larger, more suitable building was purchased in Mt. Beauty from the S.E.C.A photographic record of a typical open plan style ward in that era. There were no private rooms. There are portable screens stored at the end of the room to provide "privacy" at the bedside when needed. There is a fan on the wall for cooling. This article acknowledged the naming of Ory's Trail at Falls Creek in 1986. Orest “Ory” Frueauf was born in Kharkov, Russia in 1925 and moved to Germany with his family to escape persecution. He was conscripted to the German Army during the Second World War. He was a POW until 1948. He was recruited by a French construction company to work as and interpreter on a hydroelectricity project in Tasmania. Ory then moved to work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme including driving a truck to fill the wall of the Rocky Valley dam. In 1952 Ory was recruited by the Albury Ski Club as its lodge supervisor. That year he also entered into a business partnership with Cecil Dobson, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963 and Ory went on to build a new lodge called “Snowhaven” at the site of the present day Frueauf Village, Falls Creek. Cecil Dobson began work as a carpenter/ labourer in Mount Beauty in 1947 and then as a chainman and truck driver on the High Plains. He started a small shop on the mountain to which supplies had to be dragged on a sledge. In 1952 he entered into a business partnership with Orest “Ory” Freauf, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They acquired a crawler tractor which they called “Leaping Lina” to make transport easier. He also built lodges for other people, including the Dawn Ski Club Lodge. To make more money and get away from the grocery store, Cec and Ory extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963. Cec retired in 1984 and moved to Tawonga South, Victoria.
