The horse tram was established by the Northern Tramway Company in 1889. Purchased by the Coburg Council in 1911 they operated until 1916 when replaced by the electric trams of the Melbourne Brunswick and Coburg Tramway Trust. The P&M T T commenced in 1910 with some four and a half route miles along High Street, Glenferrie Road and Wattletree Road. The Birney tram was named after its designer Charles Birney and was designated a "safety car". It was a type G tram that had a smaller wheel base and was designed specifically for routes with lighter traffic as it could only carry 50 passengers. It featured folding doors and steps and was the first tram that could be operated by the driver alone without a conductor. This particular tram was built in 1925 by the J G Brill Company in Philadelphia, USA. It was flat-packed to Adelaide where it was reassembled. It operator in Adelaide until 1935 when it was sold to Geelong before again being sold to the Bendigo Tramways in 1947. It continued to operate until the tramways closure in 1972. Set of 7 photographs taken during a tram tour using Birney's 30 and 28. Possibly 1971 or early 1972 prior to closure. 1 - High St Eaglehawk with Primary School hall behind. 2 - Tram 28 from another tram's window - note no driver. 3 - trams 28 and 30 in McCrae St with the Bendigo Technical College building in the background. 4 - Tour trams turning from Bernard St into View St with the Five Lions Hotel in the background with a Fosters Lager advertisement. Newspaper clipping from The National Times, mid 1972 about the securing of a Birney tram by The Bendigo Trust following the attempt by the Adelaide based Australian Electric Transport Museum (called Tramway Society) to remove the tram. At the time this caused great concern amongst tramway museums. The problem was later resolved by the Bendigo Trust rebuilding a former scrapped Bendigo Birney tramcar No. 27, partly paid for by the Government for the Adelaide Museum. This tram, Adelaide MTT 1924 G-Type No. 303 is operational at the St Kilda Tramway Museum, Adelaide. Other museums did not receive their promised tramcars.
