These nine photographs of contractors felling a sequoia Californian redwood tree was taken at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 16th of September 1994. Although 23 photos were taken at the time, 14 were not scanned due to their similarity to the nine featured photos. Two sequoia Californian redwood trees were planted at the front entrance of Fortuna Villa in the early days of gold mining magnate George Lansell’s occupation in the 1870’s. They were of immense proportion and much admired during the Lansell era and RA Svy’s occupation from 1942 to 1996. In these early days of Army occupation, the trees were lopped due to concerns of their size and proximity to the Villa. The felling of the tree in 1994 was considered unsafe due to perceptions of disease. These perceptions were upsetting to staff, as some believed that although there were a few dead branches, the tree was OK. As the tree had a noticeable lean, measurements were taken indicating the tree was stable. A sequoia sapling was eventually planted as a replacement to the diseased tree. It was decided to mill and store the timber of the felled tree on-site due to its historical significance. Although future uses were not determined at the time, the timber was eventually used to construct display cabinets and souvenir pens. When Defence decided to relocate geospatial production to a new facility in Junortoun an outer suburb of Bendigo in 2008, the sequoia timber was used as a beautiful feature in the front foyer as well as several feature walls within the building, providing a historical connection Fortuna Villa.This is a set of nine photographs of contractors felling a Sequoia (Californian redwood) tree at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 16th of September 1994. Photos of plaques at the base of trees at the Shrine of Remembrance. One is of the Lone Pine planted from by Legacy from the seeds of a cone from Gallipoli and planted by Legatee Stan Savige in 1933 in remembrance of fallen comrades of the 24th Battalion. The plaque is in the form of the red and white diamond badge of the 24th Battalion. This tree had to be removed in 2012 due to its age had led to safety concerns. Also a plaque from the Olive tree of peace planted by Legatee Frank Doolan in 1973 which was the 50th anniversary of Legacy. Other trees were for Netherlands' Service Personnel, and the 18th squadron NEI-RAAF Forces Association, and the fallen comrades of the RAAF Beaufort squadrons. There is also a tree for the 'Carry On' Club of Victoria. These photos were taken at the same time as views of the Legacy Garden and photos of the man and donkey statue at the Shrine of Remembrance. Believed to be late 1980s when the garden was renamed for Legacy, and before 1998 when the statue of the Widow and Children was installed. Federation University Mount Helen Campus was open to students in 1970. In that year Mr Dowling as photographed beside a big Tasmanian bluegum which was used a the centre Mount Helen Campus concept plan, and later became known as the Tree of Knowledge. Mr Dowling watered the tree after it was planted by his mother, Elizabeth Downing, on Arbour Day 1896. Mrs Downing raised her large family on the site of the Mount Helen Campus, which included an orchard and milking cows. The Tree of Knowledge is actually two trees, the trunks have fused together over time, and there is further evidence of fusion. The Downing farmhouse was situated in the vicinity of the present Administration and Caro Conference Centre buildings and the tree was planted beside the "dunny". It was carefully watered by the nine Downing children from a brick-lined well situated under what is now the Albert Coates Building. As the tree grew to maturity, it was used to hang a meat safe after slaughtering a sheep for the family table. Some years ago, when the foundations were being dug for the E-Building, an old rusted percussion pistol was found. One of Mrs Downing's sons, at that time well into his nineties, remembered getting into trouble for playing with it without permission, and losing it. The land was purchased in 1966 as part of a 241-acre site for Ballarat's new tertiary institution. When the architects and planners inspected the site, they decided "The Big Tree" must remain as a central landmark in preparing the layout of the campus amenities. In 1982, the spread of the tree was 36 metres, girth 7 metres, and height 36 metres. By 2003 the spread was 39.5 metres (N-S) and 35.5 metres (E-W), girth 7.75 metres, and height 42.5 metres.
