Sandhurst is the early name for the Victorian goldfield town of Bendigo. The original was published by Melbourne's Sands and Kenny Melbourne in 1857, and the plate from "Victoria Illustrated" by S.T. Gill. Balck and white steel engraving of a work by Samuel Thomas Gill showing a scene in early Bendigo. Henry William Frood was born in England in 1830 and came to the Victorian Goldfields in 1856. As a sergeant of Police, he served for a total of 32 years in Castlemaine, Sandhurst, Daylesford, Horsham and Stawell until his retirement in 1889. 13 August 1843 First application for the Bushy Park run appeared in the “Port Phillip Gazette”. It was taken up by Angus McMillan, who took up the Boisdale run across the Avon River at the same time, for his employer Lachlan Macalister. This house was built in 1848. March 1844 Licence to Bushy Park granted to McMillan. It consisted of 16,000 acres. Late 1840s Bushy Park homestead built for McMillan by Andrew Martin and Matt McCraw. Document, Spying on the Goldfields by Ralph Birrell, Dissatisfaction over the licence issue that festered on the Victorian Goldfields during the early 1850s, might be said to have its genisis at Reid's Creek on the Ovens goldfield. Before the end of August 1851 the government had decided to charge a large licence fee for the right to search for gold. When news of that decision reached the Buninyong diggings, the first protest on the Victorian goldfields was held. This ledger contains details of debts owed by people in the Warrnambool district. It dates from 1906 to 1916. The compiler of the ledger is unknown. Many of the debtors are Chinese, mostly working as market gardeners in the north Warrnambool area and the debts usually concerned rents and the supply of agricultural items such as chaff. These Chinese, many of whom came from the Victorian goldfields, operated market gardens and businesses in the town of Warrnambool from the 1870s to the 1930s or 40s.This ledger is of interest because of the names of people listed as debtors and in particular the names of Chinese working in the district. The ledger is thus a valuable research tool. This is a ledger with a thick card cover in a mottled pattern in red, black, blue and yellow colours The spine, which has some damage, is covered in a maroon coloured leather. From 1851 the Victorian government required all men on Victorian Goldfields to carry a Gold License. The fee was one pound per month, and was payable in advance. There was agitation surrounding the gold license which was thought to be an excessive fee and did not give the bearer right to representation. On 03 December 1854 the gold diggers on the Eureka Lead fought a short battle against the army and police troopers. A few months later a new system of taxing gold diggers was introduced - the Miner's Right.The Victorian Gold Licence was issued from 1851 until early 1855. Every man on a Victorian goldfield had to carry a valid gold license, so few survived the harsh treatment of being carried around a working goldfield. There was much dissatisfaction about what was thought to be an unfair mining tax (or gold license). On 29 November 1854 Ballarat miners burnt their licenses on Bakery Hill. On 3 December 1854 the Eureka Stockade Battle took place, resulting in the Goldfields Commission. The first Miner's Right was issued in late June 1855, and in July the first Local Courts were elected by miner's right holders. The two Fitnall Gold Licenses are important because they were issued on either side of the Eureka Stockade, and are in very good condition. The Gold Licenses were donated to the Ballarat School of Mines by John Wilson in 1921. Two gold licenses issued by the Colony of Victoria. Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. The Miner’s Right has a long history in Australia. Still in use today, it was first established in Victoria in 1855, as a replacement for the Gold License (which had been introduced in Victoria in 1851). The Miner’s Right was subsequently adopted by other Australian colonies. Unlike the Gold License, the early Miner’s Right, in addition to the right to prospect for gold, also carried with it certain other advantages, such as property rights and voting rights.
