Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, KG, KT, KP, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, PC (Henry William Frederick Albert; 31 March 1900 – 10 June 1974) was the third son and fourth child of King George V and Queen Mary. He served as Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1947, the only member of the British royal family to hold the post. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GBE (born Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. She was the mother of Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. The daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch, Scotland's largest landowner, she became by marriage a princess of the United Kingdom, and a sister-in-law to Edward VIII and George VI. She was thus an aunt by marriage to Elizabeth II. Princess Alice was extremely well travelled, both before and after her marriage. At the time of her death at 102, she was the oldest living member of the British royal family. David W. Streader (1887 - 1978) was Mayor of Bendigo from 1946 - 47. He was a JP and belonged to the Loyal Sandhurst Lodge. The book features facsimiles of the addresses made to the Duke of Cornwall and York and the Governor-General, facsimile pages showing signatures of mayors, councillors and town clerks, views of municipal buildings, and the replies sent by the Duke and Governor-General.This book titled 'Addresses to His Royal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York and to His Excellency the Governor-General From The Municipalities of Victoria' was published by the Municipal Association of Victoria to commemorate the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. It was printed by McCarron, Bird & Co in Melbourne. It contains copies of messages from each of the municipalities of Victoria. The addresses were made on the occasion of the Duke & Duchess of Cornwall & York's visit to Melbourne in May 1901. They were in the city for the opening of Federal Parliament which took place at the Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens on 9 May 1901. This set of photos is from a leather bound album bearing the inscription "HUME RESERVOIR AUSTRALIA" plus 'The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M .P.' all inscribed in gold. It was presented to The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M. P, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs on the occasion of his visit to the Hume Reservoir on 2nd November 1927. This album is of local and national significance as it documents the planning and development of the Hume Reservoir up to 1927. It was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. A letter dated 25 September 1978, that Legatee Frank Doolan wrote to a Perth Legatee before the 1978 Conference in Geelong. In the letter he mentions that he is trying to ascertain details about the Agenda for the forthcoming Conference in Geelong in November 1978. In particular that a Pensions paper that is to be presented by Eddie Cohen, Chairman of the Melbourne Pensions Committee. Frank mentions that he is the sole survivor of the dinner held for the Geelong Club's inauguration. He says that they have lost 3 octagenarian Legatees in the past fortnight and this has prompted Frank to clear out some of his papers. He also mentions a carbon copy of a diary he had kept on a trip to Perth on the SS Kangaroo and how he appreciated Ivan's hospitality and comradeship on that visit. (see item 01132). The 1978 Geelong Conference had more than 550 Legatees registered at that stage and were planning to seat 600 at a Formal Dinner on the Saturday night. The Conference was to be opened by the Governor General on Thursday and close with a barbeque at the Military School at Queenscliff on the Sunday. While this incident was being photographed a flashbulb exploded with a loud report, but the Duchess was unperturbed.' The article continued that the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were welcomed by the President W A Perrin and his wife. This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982.
