In February 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School opened its doors to its 86 pupils. The old bluestone building in the grounds of the Dana Street Primary School became their temporary home for eight years. In its early years the school offered only a two-year course. The first year was of a general nature giving a thorough grounding in Mathematics and Instrumental Drawing, and introducing students to the various branches of trade work. The second-year students studied for the Junior Technical Certificate and specialized in a course of their choice - either a trade (Woodwork or Fitting and Turning) or a course leading to higher studies at the School of Mines. Increased enrolments - 86 to 110 in the second year. Some applicants were turned away due to lack of space. An abandoned single room school was brought in and this helped for a time. Plans were developed and a two-storied red brick building in the vacinity of the School of Mines was build. An acre of land was reclaimed from the north-east corner of the Ballarat Gaol. The school backed onto the wall of the gaol. The task of landscaping and terracing of the area was to cost a great deal and time. The boys did much of the heavy work. This kept them occupied as the official playground areas were still full of rubble. This clock has no known provenance but has been in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection for many years. This clock is a good example of a 19th century (or perhaps early 20th century?) wall clock and is an attractive display item. This is a wooden- frame clock for hanging on a wall. The face is tin painted cream with some paint missing. The numbers on the face are Roman numerals and the hands have Maltese crosses at the ends and are painted. The face is inlaid with 6 small circular dots of mother-of-pearl and there are seven similar inlaid circles on the wooden base. The glass covering the dial is hinged and brass-edged. The wooden base has fretwork and scroll sections and carved decorative edges and a rounded bottom. One side piece of the decoration is missing. The fretwork piece opens to show a brass pendulum. White Flat was an early gold diggings. As early as 1856 the White Flat Drainage and Mining Co. constructed water races, drained the swampy land, and changed the course of the Yarrowee Creek. This may be remnants of that work. Shows Mrs J. Brown, one of her four daughtrers and her two sons who died in World War One with their dog posing in front of fence of Headmaster's house, at Eltham State School, Dalton Street. Date circa 1902. The building still stands. Reproduced p66 of Pioneers & Painters Mrs Jane Elizabeth Brown (nee Staines) and three children of her large family who left the Headmaster's residence when John Brown (Headmaster 1889-1906) died (on the job) in 1906. John and Jane had ten children eight girls and two boys. Their two sons both died in the 1914-1918 War; George Stewart Brown (1885-1916) and John Leonard Brown (1887-1918). The young girl may be Elsie Maria Brown (1889-1917) which would date the photo around 1902. Wall Bros operated at St Kilda from around 1889 to 1903. John Brown died 23 Sept 1906 after a short severe illness at age 55 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (Evelyn Observer 28 Sep 1906 p2). The book "We did open a school in Little Eltham" incorrectly states his date of death as 16/12/1906. Title The Evelyn Observer. (1906, September 28).
