A photo of Anzac Day in London in 1956 from a Comradeship photo album. It identifies Sir Thomas White at the East door of Westminster Abbey after the service. The caption says Sir Thomas White was the 3rd President of Melbourne Legacy. He had also been the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956, so he was soon to return to Australia. According to a biography website he died the next year (1957). http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/white-sir-thomas-walter-12013 This photo and several others (see 01029 - 01031) of Anzac services in London are part of a photo album to of Comradeship activities (from 930 to 1977). A menu card at 01298 shows that Group Captain White was given a farewell dinner when he left Australia for the post in London and it was attended by many legatees.A record that Legatees often held prominent positions such as High Commissioner of Britain. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places. Students attended Sunday School classes at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. This dish features an image of Warrnambool Harbour taken from the location of the Lower Lighthouse on Flagstaff Hill. This area is popular with tourists and the dish has been sold as a souvenir of a visit to Warrnambool. The Lower Lighthouse was first used in 1871. This dish is retained as an example of a tourist souvenir item in the late 20th century. Tourism in Warrnambool has always been an important industry. This is a white china oval-shaped dish with a fluted edge and a gold trim around the edge. The base of the dish has a multi-coloured image of Warrnambool Harbour and the Lower Lighthouse on Flagstaff Hill. This is a trophy awarded at a camp of the 4/19 Light Horse Regiment. This regiment appeared to have been based in the Corangamite region of the Western District and included regiment members from Warrnambool. It is not known exactly what type of competition was an ‘Officers Flutter’. Light Horse regiments were cavalry regiments that were established at the time of the Crimean War in the 1860s. During the First World War the 4th Light Horse served with distinction in France, Gallipoli and Palestine. In 1948 the 17th Prince of Wales Light Horse, the 19th Yarrowee Light Horse and the 4th (ex 20th ) Corangamite Light Horse amalgamated to form a revived 4/19 Light Horse. This regiment kept alive the tradition of the original Light Horse units, becoming part of the Australian Army Reserve and members served in Vietnam and East Timor. This cup is of interest as an example of the trophies awarded for competition at a Light Horse regiment camp in the 1930s. This is a metal cup (silver amalgam)) with two side handles and a narrow stem attached to a silver base. The cup is attached to a brown Bakelite stand. This commemorative framed print was a gift presented by Freemason, Worship Brother J. Wishart Junior, who also had the title of Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge from 1983-1954. This print was possibly presented by Wor. Bro. J. Wishart to the Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool the year following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, just after Wishart completed his term as the Worshipful Master of the Lodge. It is likely that the portrait was also part of the furnishings when one of Flagstaff Hill's village buildings was set up as a 19th century style Masonic Lodge, as shown in the map of the village in 1994 and was activated by a member of the Masonic Lodge. (Before this time the building was a Reference Library, and some time afterwards it was a Reading Library, and is now a Mechanics' Institute.) Australia is part of the British Commonwealth. Respect for the reigning monarchy of the colony of Australia has been shown here since colonisation and continued after Federation. Portraits of the reigning sovereignty have been displayed in public organisations, government departments and clubs over the years. Children in schools have been taught to 'Honour the flag, serve the Queen" (or King) etc. In February 1952 King George VI of England passed away. His daughter was proclaimed Queen, and crowned as H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd, 1953, at Westminster Abbey, London. It is interesting to note that on 12th April, 1997, Warrnambool's Masonic Centre in Kepler Street held a 150 years celebration of the settlement of Warrnambool and District. A time capsule was inserted in the 'foundation stone' and one of the items inside it was a Flagstaff Hill Heritage Centre leaflet. The portrait of the coronation of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and her continued reign of 70 years is significant, as it marks a very special occasion in the history of Britain and its Commonwealth. This portrait is similar to many other portraits of the Queen's coronation and is familiar to Australian citizens of the current generation and the ongoing link to Britain's colonasit6ion of Australia.Print, coloured, framed behind glass. This newspaper supplement has a series of pictures specially drawn by 'Sphere" artists to show a pictorial record of the journey of the Unknown Warrior from a lonely grave on the battlefield to a tomb in Westminster Abbey on 11th November 1920. 11 November 1920 On 11 November 1920, the second anniversary of the Armistice, the commemoration became a funeral when the remains of an unknown soldier were returned from the battlefields of the Western Front. The ceramic plate commemorates the 150th anniversary of the State of Victoria, with an original painting of the Royal Exhibiton Building in Melbourne on the front, by the Victorian artist Charles McCubbin (1930-2010). Charles McCubbin was the grandson of the Australian painter Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917). This cup was sold as a souvenir of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937. It was probably bought locally as devotion to the British Empire was strong in the 1930s. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth took place on 12 May 1937 at Westminster Abbey. This followed the abdication of Edward VIII. This cup is retained as an example of the high quality souvenirs of the 1937 Coronation of King George VI sold to those in British Empire countries. In April-May 1971, Robin and Patricia Boyd travelled to Honolulu, east coast USA and London. In London he was one of the judges for the Commonwealth-wide entries for the redevelopment of Whitehall and the Palace of Westminster.
