A Royal Humane Society of Australasia silver medal for bravery was awarded to Mrs Isadore Susannah Smith who, although blind, went to the aid of her husband, Arthur who was also blind, when he fell against a gas fire on July 2nd, 1967. Mrs Smith suffered second degree burns to her hands and wrists when she removed his burning pieces of clothing. The ANZAC Day medallion was issued for sale in 1916. The medallion was struck by the Education Department of Victoria for school children in 1916, to commemorate the first anniversary of the ANZAC Forces landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. An article in the ARGUS newspaper, written at the time, stated that the medallions were issued for sale for the price of sixpence. Although 175,000 medallions were made, this proved insufficient for demand. The medallion was sold to Victorian school children at commemorations of the landing of the of the Australian and New Zealand troops arriving on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915. The medallion was also distributed to the public on ANZAC Button Day for one shilling. Circular medal with an eyelet at the top for attaching loop holding ribbon (loop and ribbon missing). The origins of the Royal Australian Engineers date back to 15th November 1860 when the Corps of Engineers was founded in Victoria by Peter Scratchley. By 1876, five of the six colonies - New South Wales , Victoria ,Queensland ,Tasmania and Western Australia - had raised their own engineer units. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a green tunic uniform, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. Photos of an Anzac Day service in at the Australian Military Cemetery in Harefield UK in 1996. The local school children march to the cemetery to place wreaths, there is a parade of flags, a service and a choir. Legacy provided flags for the headstones. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 with wreaths at base. The "Girl's Remembrance League" worked to raise money for the memorial to be built. Cost was 643.0.0 pounds. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 10th Nov. 1923, by Archdeacon T.P. Bennett, (a respected pardre and old Stawell boy). Photo was copied from original donated by Mrs. L Matthew's whose mother Mrs. A. V. Cornish was a member of the Girls Remembrance League. Memorial was partly built by Robson & Grey, when partnership dissolved Mr. G.M. Robson completed the work. Bugles have been used for hundreds of years for communicating instructions, particularly in battles, and announcements such as calls to assemble and various other routines of the day, particularly for infantry and military units. This pure silver bugle was presented to the Warrnambool Rifle Volunteers by Lady Helpman, on behalf of the Ladies of the District of Warrnambool, on June 18th, 1861. Lady Helpman's husband, Captain Benjamin Franklin Helpman, was Warrnambool Harbour master. The gift of this silver bugle was presented to the commanding officer of the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps, Captain Bushe, who then passed it on to the Warrnambool Volunteer Band. On 11th August 2016, during a ceremony at Flagstaff Hill, the Australian Army handed over custodianship of two very significant historical items the 1885 W. Clarke Trophy and the 1861 Warrnambool Ladies Silver Bugle to Warrnambool City Council, for display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime museum, both heritage listed items are strongly connected to the city of Warrnambool and form an integral part in the history of the Warrnambool Garrison.The Silver Bugle is locally significant to the community of Warrnambool for its connection to the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps., which formed part of the original Warrnambool Garrison to protect the Warrnambool Harbour. The site of the 1888 Warrnambool Garrison and Fortifications is Victorian State Heritage-listed is significant for its intact and operational nature and is one of the best-preserved pieces of Victoria's early colonial heritage. Silver alloy Bugle, with brass mouthpiece, a long tube of metal, narrow at the mouth end and gradually flaring to a wider at the bell shape at the other end. The tube is shaped into 3 bends. The front of the bell has an elaborate design of a ribbon banner attached above an oval floral wreath enclosing an inscription. Photos of wreaths at the old war memorial after an Anzac Day service. A war memorial/Cenotaph to the 1914-1918 war was originally erected in Spring Street outside the Victorian Parliament. It was a flimsy half-sized replica of the London Symbol of Remembrance in Whitehall built of timber and fibro cement and was only meant to be temporary. Anzac Day services were held at this memorial in the 1920s and early 1930s. These photos were taken before the Shrine of Remembrance was erected and dedicated in 1934 as the National War Memorial of Victoria. It is possible that the stamp on the reverse, '4 24', means April 1924, also see a similar photo at 01371. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Labelled S15 in red pen it was part of an old archive numbering system (S=Shrine), that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. From articles in Trove: The temporary cenotaph was the original first world war memorial until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. The cenotaph was a half size replica of the London Symbol of Remembrance in Whitehall. It was made from timber and plaster and was initially meant to only last for the 1926 Anzac day service and be removed. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The designation "Nippon porcelain" refers to porcelain made in Japan for export to the west, and stamped with the word Nippon on their bases. This practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren't "plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labelled in legible English words." Unfortunately, many reproduction or fake pieces were also produced. In 1921 "Nippon" was no longer accepted by U.S. Customs Agents as the correct name of origin so from then on, imported Japanese porcelain was supposed to be marked "Japan". This information helps us to establish provenance of this item.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of Japanese porcelain of the early 20th century.A hand painted coffee cup and saucer with gold trim and floral design. The 1914–15 Star was authorised in 1918 and was awarded for service in specified theatres of war between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915. A recipient of the 1914 Star could not also be awarded the 1914–15 Star. Albert was born 29 June 1897 at his home 'Ashford Vale" farm, Cuthbert's Road, Cardigan. Albert, a second generation Australian, was the fourth son and sixth of eleven children born to dairy farmer John White and his wife Elizabeth, nee Douglas. Albert attended Bunker's Hill State School prior to enrolling at Ballarat College. After College he obtained employment with the engineering firm Ronaldson and Tippett in Ballarat. Following his eighteenth birthday Albert enlisted in the AIF in Ballarat with the rank of Private, No 2012. He embarked for the Middle East with 23rd Battalion on 26 August 1915 and was 'taken on strength at the Gallipoli Peninsular 25 October 1915". On 10 January 1916 Albert was posted to Alexandria, Egypt and during this time he was able to meet with his aunt Rose Douglas, an Australian Army Nursing Sister. This was a great comfort to his family. Albert was sent to France 19 March 1916 and transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was mentioned in dispatches for 'good and gallant conduct' 5 August (1917?). Albert was hospitalised 30 March 1918, rejoined 22nd Battalion 3 June 1918, wounded in action 3 October 1918 but died of wounds at Rouen 10 October 1918. news of his death was received by his family in Australia just prior to the armistice. Albert Telfer White's sacrifice is commemorated at Ballarat College, Avenue of Honour Ballarat (Tree 1214), Ballarat Shire Honour Avenue Learmonth (Tree 163) and the Australian War Memorial Canberra. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance in April 1990. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. This was the 59th Annual Ceremony more photos are at 01532. As well as photos of the ceremony and a fly past of four aircraft there are photos of three widows attending. The elderly lady in white on the left is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who is also in 00579. An identical cenotaph was constructed outside Parliament house in Spring st Melbourne, Australia.The design is made up of a rectangular base a broad pillar and the cenotaph or coffin on top of the pillar. 3 wreaths also feature, 2 on the narrower sides of the pillar with the years 1914 and 1918 and one wreath on top of the coffin. It has 2 coats of paint on it the second(exposed) being a poor uneven coat of, off white gloss enamel, possibly just house paint.No makers marks or date can be found on the exterior of the model.
