"Article compiled by Joan McEwan, great-granddaughter, researched by James Tibbett, great, great grandson." Richard Williams was born in St. Blazey, Cornwall in 1831 to James and Ann Williams. Married to Mary Thomas with whom he had 12 children: Eliza Ann "Lou" Thomas, Sarah Mary "Molly" Williams, Margaret "Peg" Williams (born 1858), Ellen Williams (1859-1860), George Williams (b. 1861), Richard Williams (b.1862), John Williams (1863-1866), Ellen Williams (b.1865), Stephen John Williams (b.1867), Albert James Williams (b. 1868), Michael Thomas Williams (b.1871) and Laura Williams (b.1872). Worked in the Cornish mines until he was 21 and sought work in America. Landed in Melbourne on 20 December 1857 in search of gold. Was given supervision of the work conducted in the 1864 Cinderella Claim belonging to Geroge Lansell, among others. Williams was later named manager of all of Lansell's mines. Williams later opposed Lansell in favour of better working conditions for miners. Williams was then in charge of the Johnson Reef Company until his retirement. He worked on the administrative council at the Bendigo School of Mines, was named Justice of the Peace and was a founding member of the California Hill Methodist Church. William FRATER (1890-1974) Born 31 January 1890 at Ochiltree Castle, near Linlithgow, Scotland Arrived Melbourne, Australia in September 1910 In a lecture on modern art in 1925, Frater stated the basic position from which the rest of his oeuvre stems: 'Copying nature is not an art; … to copy effects of light tends to destroy form and colour'. Frater gave aggressive leadership to the small group of modernists in the 1920s. His example, teaching, lecturing and crusty style of polemic did much to disrupt the academic style as the arbiter of pictorial values and to pioneer a change of taste in the community.His approach in the 1930s was markedly indebted to Cézanne, especially in the portraits which predominated until his retirement from stained-glass designing in 1940. This is the biography of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts costing one penny and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. It appears that many of his books were in Warrnambool homes in the 19th century.This book is of interest as it details the life of Charles Spurgeon, a person whose sermons and writings were familiar to many people in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society includes a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife, thus appearing to indicate his popularity and influence extended as far as Warrnambool and district. This is a hard cover book of 330 pages. The cover has a mauve background with gold lettering on the front cover and spine. Henry Disston (1819-1878) was born in England and later moved to America. He has been noted in a biography as a "Pioneer Industrialist Inventor". In 1840 he began making and selling his own saws in Philadelphia, USA, growing to become the world's largest saw manufacturer. Tools made by Henry Disston and his company have the reputation of being the finest tools money can buy.The saw sharpening vice and its shifting spanner are significant for their connection with Henry Distton & Sons, renowned for high quality hand saws and associated tools. In 1855 Henry Disston cast a crucible saw sharpening steel, the first person to ever do so in America. The hand tools are also important for their association with the early building industry. This is a novella by Wendy Scarfe. She is a novelist and writer who lives in Warrnambool with her writer husband Alan Scarfe. She graduated from the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Secondary Teachers’ College and has taught in Australia, England and India. Her final teaching post was at Warrnambool High School. She has published many novels, biographies, volumes of poetry and other books dealing with social issues. This book is important because it was written by a local Warrnambool author, Wendy Scarfe. She has twice been awarded an Australian Council Literature Board Special Purpose Grant and has a fine reputation as a writer. This is a soft cover book of 120 pages. It has a light grey cover with black print and red lines on the front cover and critics’ comments in black print on the back cover. This book is an early school reader for the Fifth Grade. It appears to be a British publication and has no Australian content (except for a brief biography of Captain Cook). The name ‘Matilda F.’ from Mailors Flat can probably be identified as Matilda Freckleton as the Freckleton family members were prominent settlers in the Mailors Flat area in the early 20th century. Matilda Freckleton (1886-1957) was the daughter of Francis and Catherine Freckleton. She married Calvin Chambers in 1906. This book is of minor interest as it is an example of an early school reader and it probably belonged to an early Mailors Flat resident, Matilda Freckleton. This is a soft cover book of 414 pages. The original front cover has been lost and a piece of grey cardboard has been used as its replacement. The back cover was originally a brown colour. The spine is now covered with a piece of grey material stitched on to part of the original spine. Some front and back pages are missing. The text has three sections and these contain prose extracts, stories, poems, hymns and work exercises. There are some black and white illustrations. A couple of pages are loose. Pasted in at the front and back pages are cuttings from newspapers. The handwritten material is in blue ink and pencil. This catalogue was written by Joan Luxemburg for the Art Gallery of Ballarat Exhibition of James Meek works (13th June to 9th August 2015). It is not intended as a full biography of James Meek and concentrates on his decorative works. Joan Luxemburg has spent many years researching the life and works of James Meek and the exhibition and catalogue are part of a PhD project at Federation University. A biography of James Meek by Joan Luxemburg is due for publication in 2016. English-born James Meek, a fisherman, cannery operator, poet, writer, explorer in the Otway district, librarian, calligrapher and accountant, was one of the first settlers in Ballarat, building the first house and establishing a cordial and sly grog business. After some time in Melbourne he came to the Warrnambool area, becoming an early settler in the Peterborough area and establishing a cannery there. In Warrnambool he set up a commercial fishing company which failed, organized an Otways exploration trip looking for gold and established a reputation for producing fine calligraphy works. He was in New Zealand from 1874 to 1890 and died in Warrnambool in 1899. This catalogue is important because it records the decorative works of James Meek, an important early settler in Warrnambool and district. Meek was well-known in Warrnambool in the 1850s and 60s as a commercial fisherman, an Otways explorer, a writer and lecturer and a calligrapher. One of his daughters married Peter Dallimore, a fellmonger at Lake Gillear and the Dallimore family is also prominent in our history.
