The Easter Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week in April 1916. The Rising was launched by Irish republicans against British rule in Ireland with the aim of establishing an independent Irish Republic while the United Kingdom was fighting the First World War. It was the most significant uprising in Ireland since the rebellion of 1798 and the first armed conflict of the Irish revolutionary period. Sixteen of the Rising's leaders were executed starting in May 1916. Set of three photographs originally used in item 4212, that suffered significant water damage. Each of a part of the length of tram W2 439 painted by Stewart Merritt, showing the tram along its length. Each photograph along the length of the tram individually presented, but not necessarily lining up. The images show the nature of the damage. Was originally from framed with a wood half round section, painted brown, glazed, with non-acid free cardboard surround and paper backing but has suffered extensive water damage both to the cardboard and the individual photographs themselves. The photographs were in a deteriorated condition. The item was unglazed at the time of the donation. The spinning wheel was owned by Amy Penfold (donor Jan Dawson's mother) who presumably purchased the spinning wheel in the 1930s at an antiques auction. Amy lent the spinning wheel to her friends who spun (as Amy could not spin herself) In Yass, New South Wales during the early years of the Second World War. Amy's friends would spin lightly scoured semi greasy wool worked into yarn and knitted into particularly warm and water-resistant socks for sailors on minesweepers serving during the Second World War. Jan received the wheel in the early 1960s after her mother past away at which time the wheel was no longer operable. When Jan came to live in Melbourne, she sought the assistance of Spinners and Handweavers who assisted her in creating a new bobbin and restored the broken pieces of the wheel back into working order which we find it in today. With the loom are three bobbins. One bobbin is attached to the loom while of the two loose bobbins; one is a reproduction and one is an original. From these two the differences in construction can be observed. Large 12 spokes pinning wheel finished in dark tinted varnish on wood. Ornate upright posts.Additional two bobbins. One original and slightly damaged other is a reproduction and in excellent condition.

The Little Friarbird is a migrational bird, moving between northern Australia and the New South Wales/Victoria border in the spring and autumn times. It is primarily found near in forests and near water: rivers, wetlands. They eat nectar, bugs, fruit and seeds. They form monogamous pairs and nest close to water. They are not a threatened species. The Little Friarbird has a brown head, back, wings and tail. Its chest is light brown. Its legs, beak and face are dark grey. It has bright blue patches on its cheeks under the eyes. This specimen does not accurately match how the Little Friarbird looks because the specimen has lost clumps of feathers on its chest, neck and face. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century This Little Friarbird has blue patches on its cheeks, brown head, back and tail. The front and neck are a light brown. Its back is grey. It has serious pest damage to the back of its neck, which has no feathers. Above its eyes shows early signs of pest damage. The front of the bird has ruffled patches of feathers. It stands on a dark wooden stand. It has an identification tag hanging from its left leg.
