Awarded to the Shire of Eltham Historical Society for the most best Eltham theme Newsletter No. 33, November 1983 ELTHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Despite the miserable weather, there was a good turnout. of members for the Festival parade. However the wet weather kept away many of our friends from the Victorian Folk Music Club who find it impossible to play in the rain. Thanks to those few who came along. We maintained out consistency by again collecting a Prize for our float- this time for the "Best Eltham Theme". Thanks to Dennis McKay for again providing his trailer for the float, and to Paul Sidwell for towing it with his Land Rover. As usual Joh Ebeli with some help from other members, was responsible for setting up the float. A successful display was held in the Eltham Community Centre on the theme of "Notable Local Residents" People featured in the display included pioneer settlers, Thomas Sweeney and Henry Hurst; founder of Brighton and later notable Eltham resident, Henry Dendy; former Shire Secretary and Engineer, Charles Wingrove; artists Walter Withers and Justus Jorgensen; parliamentarian Ewen Cameron; anthropologist, Dr. Donald Thomson; writer, Alan Marshall. Thanks are extended to Sigmund Jorgensen; Dorita Thomson and Peter Bassett-Smith for the loan of material for the display. The Captain Cook bicentenary was commemorated in Australia in 1970. The British explorer Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook sailed and charted the East Coast of Australia in 1770, and claimed the Eastern Seabord of the Continent for the British Crown. This stencil was used as a ship identifier stamp for the transportation of wool bales. SS Runic was the largest refrigerated cargo liner during its time. In 1961 the ship struck the Middleton Reef on route from Brisbane to Auckland. The ship was unable to re-float due to weather conditions and was declared a constructive loss. The Society again arranged a float for the festival parade. Members dressed appropriately to the theme "Pioneers of Eltham". The parade commenced at 12 noon, participants assembling at 11.30am in Cecil Street. As in past parades, several members of the Victorian Folk Music Club accompanied the Society. The Society also arranged a display at the Eltham Community Centre in association with the activities there over the Festival weekend. The Tabbara Sawmill was located at Brodribb River, at the lower Snowy River estuary. In the early 1900’s bow saws and broad axes were used to selectively log the forest. Ox driven carts pulled the logs to the Snowy River; the logs were floated downstream to the steam powered mill. The PS Curlip steamboat, transported the timber to growing townships, for schools, houses and farms. The mill closed in 1903. This folder of newspaper articles was compiled by Mary Gilbert. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert, and had seven sisters and one brother. Four siblings died at a young age. .She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community.
