Label, Elma Sarll, Mid 20th century
This label comes from the Liebig Street, Warrnambool bookshop of Elma Sarll. The daughter of James and Agnes Sarll, she was born in Warrnambool in 1902 and died in 1981. It is believed that Elma Sarll’s shop was operating in the mid 20th century. This label is of minor interest as a memento of a Warrnambool business about which, unfortunately, little information is available. This is an oval-shaped label or sticker with a silver-coloured border and silver printing. The Book Shop of Elma Sarll Liebig St. Warrnamboolelma sarll, book shop, history of warrnambool -

Photograph, Criterion House, Sussex Street, Linton
... Shops ...Date of the photograph is not known. Criterion House was built by Samuel Steele in 1862/1863. Samuel Steele left Linton in the late 1860s, but it is not known if B. N. Dodd was the next owner of the building. B. N. Dodd was mentioned in advertising as a Linton draper in 1878. He sold the shop and moved to Ballarat in 1887. The upper floor of the building was used as a hospital from around the end of WWI to the early 1920s. The building was demolished around 1938/39, in connection with the rebuilding of new offices for the Shire of Grenville.Digital copy of original photograph, which shows a two-storey brick building with a verandah. There are four windows across the second storey. A sign across the front of the verandah reads "...TFITTER. B. N. DODD. DRAPER. MILLINERY". A man is leaning on a verandah post at the front of the shop near the entrance, and a woman is standing on the left of the picture, behind a box or counter. Several children are sitting on boxes or bales outside the shop. Ground floor windows have signs reading "DRAPER", "OUTFITTER", "MILLINERY". SUMMARY – Uniting Church Op Shop Melton South Opportunity Shop – Brooklyn Road Melton South Est 1975 Former Methodist Church. The Opportunity Shop – Established 1975 by Edna Barrie 1992 Typed copy by Cath MacLean 2011 [Scots’ Presbyterian Church 1964] Additional information to the above summarised from Edna Barrie’s draft notes. Copied by Wendy Barrie January 2012, noting the information might be useful for future research. In 1985 the need for more shop space became apparent. Les [Bone] had plans drawn up (Surv 12/8/84) and approved by the Melton shire Council for a storeroom extension (17.800 x 9500) 1986 the small ancillary rooms at the rear of the timber church were demolished allowing the concrete slab to be laid. The building was completed in 1987. By the early 1990s the old timber Church had deteriorated, this lead to it being demolished in 2/11/1993. It was replaced with a new building containing a Pastoral Office, a meeting room and a furniture and homeware section. It was dedicated by Rev Ian Hickingbotham at 11am Sunday 5th June 1994. Service Awards were presented to 75 Opportunity Shop Volunteers by Rev Ian Hickingbotham. Funds have helped to pay for pastoral work, youth work and extra pastoral support.
