SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN.. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS FOR SCHOOLS OF MINES AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS AND CONFLICTING VIEWS OF GOVERMENTMINISTERS RE SUBJECTS THAT COULD BE TAUGHT , CAUSED DIFFICULTIES. ONE LOCATION FOR ALL CLASSES BECAME THE ANTICIPATED SOLUTION TO MOST PROBLEMS. Set of 14 black and white photographs of the use of former sleeper transport car, W2 485 - see page 80 of Destination City 5th Edition for more details of the tram. Tram body being used to train emergency staff how to recover a tramcar that had been tipped over onto its side. DC5, notes it was stored at Preston workshops and later "used an instruction car to train emergency crews in the righting of the overturned trams. It was overturned several times in this role." Note: - would have been at the time, probably the only way to do this, as mobile cranes were only just starting to be developed. Truck is an AEC built Matador truck. Item states that it was carrying Members of Parliament on a demonstration run. Reg Item 86 would date this as 1/5/1975. Notes that four trams were used and then one a week afterwards. Framed, glazed, black and white photograph of the intersection of Flinders and Swanston St Melbourne, looking towards Flinders St railway station. Timber frame, painted brown and gold, with brown paper lining on rear. Has brown string stapled at rear on both sides for hanging. In the central bottom of the rear is "Glen Waverley Picture Framing, sticker, 698 High St Road, Glen Waverley with a 7 digit phone number. Photo c1926?? features a very busy intersection cable trams (No. 17 west bound in Flinders, tram 160 north bound in Swanston, two W class trams, other cable trams, many motor cars, horse drawn vehicles, cyclist and pedestrians. Note the standing zone in Flinders St. In photo are Young and Jacksons Hotel, Bacchus Marsh Concentrated Milk table cream, and numerous signs on the railway station.
