Part of a suite of decorated curtains, DAD-035-0001 to DAD-035-0005Though partial and damaged, these decorative 'ropes' are historically significant as evidence of further elaborate decoration of the curtain ensemble.2 lengths of decorative trimming; one piece longer (5.4m) than the other (4.5m). Essentially composed as long thin ropes of gold-coloured silk satin, stuffed with cotton wool, and twisted with a narrow gold-coloured woven metal braid. They function as soft, loose cords for ornamental draping around/in front of the curtains, perhaps on a pelmet (though no pelmet of valance survives). Spoke shaves were used by woodmakers to shape curved surfaces (originally wheel spokes). These two spoke shaves belonged to Ernest Phillips of Warrnambool who would have used them to shape the surfaces of chair and table legs etc. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was the son of Henry Phillips (a hay and corn dealer in Warrnambool) and his wife, Emma. He learned cabinet making at the Box Works in Warrnambool and in the late 19th century established a furniture-making and selling business at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. By the early 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside Melbourne and sold his products all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and after his death this Phillips house was acquired by the Methodist Church and the Heatherlie Homes for retired people were built on this site.These tools are of considerable significance as they were used by Ernest Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These are two spoke shaves - small planes, slightly curved, with wooden handles and a metal blade in the middle. The blade is attached to the handles via metal ends which go through holes in the wood. The blade area is strengthened with metal plates attached by metal screws. Temporary chapel at the Central Institute, Siddeley Street. The Institute designed by Walter Butler was inaugurated in November 1907 by Governor Northcote. Amongst the furniture are the lectern donated by Lady Northcote, the altar donated by Mrs Charles Shuter in December 1907. Both are still in use in the St Peter chapel. Groves McVitty were wholesale grocers, wine and spirit merchants, tea and coffee importers, manufacturers of Medallion brand foods. The company was located at 8-12 Market Street, Melbourne . Its own Medallion brand products included everyday staples such as shoe polish, flour, sugar, teas, cough syrup, furniture polish and Barnes brand honey.A clear glass bottle. The materials used to build the colonial cupboard have been gathered from various sources and recycled. In those days, it was normal to keep all manner of items 'just in case' they could be repurposed for another item. The brand "Laurel" on one of the wooden panels is from the Mobil Oil company's kerosene. There In the words of the donor, Betty Stone, "Made by Ellis Dale of Latrigg Wangoom, Warrnambool c 1890. The cupboard consists of packing cases stamped with original brand names. One drawer made from a gelignite packing case is of special significance as the Dale family owned a bluestone quarry known as The Dale Bluestone Quarries at Wangoom situated about three miles east of Warrnambool. Ellis Dale, second son of William Dale and Elizabeth (nee Chamberlain) Dale, was born in Wangoom, Warrnambool on 21 November 1860. His father, William Dale, a quarryman from Saddleworth, Yorkshire migrated to Australia in 1852; seven years later - in 1859- he purchased the quarries on twenty acres of land situated in Wangoom at the corner of what is now known as Dales and Aberline Roads. Later, when his two eldest sons, William Jnr and Ellis, reached ten or eleven years of age they worked with their father in the quarries. The work was arduous and dangerous as gelignite was used to blast the bluestone. In 1890 Ellis Dale married Ann Lees, daughter of Lees and Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees of Wangoom, Warrnambool. Initially Ellis and Ann Dale resided in a two roomed bluestone cottage which Ellis built a little further up the hill from his parents' home on the Dale family property. A few years later, in order to accommodate their growing family, additional rooms were added making a spacious, comfortable weatherboard home situated in Dales Road which they named Latrigg. Ellis Dale constructed this cupboard soon after he and Ann first set up home in their little stone cottage in 1890. When the home was rebuilt, the home-made cupboard was moved into the larger kitchen, and although Latrigg was well furnished, it remained in the corner between the kitchen door and the large wood stove where it served its purpose very well as it was used for storing ironing utensils. The lower compartment with the hinged drop-door was designed to store the flat irons which were heated on the wood stove, while the ironing blanket and cover, iron holders and other items were stored in the drawers. The Dale quarrying and contracting business existed in Wangoom, Warrnambool for over eighty years as after William Dale’s death. Ellis Dale together with his son lvor, continued on until he died in 1940. This piece of an old bath dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. The bath would have been used by the Partington or Bosch families at the property at Point Lookout. This piece is from a bath that was used by our grandfather (born in 1872) when the family lived at Point Lookout before the Partington family bought Willis Vale in 1878. The bath remnant was retrieved after fire destroyed the house. Bed head (remnant): From the Willis Vale homestead. The Partingtons purchased Willis Vale in 1878. William James Partington (1872-1941) and his wife Annie May (1874-1965). They were the parents of Eva, Grace, Alan, Jess and Jack. A succession of teachers has signed their names under the lid, and the notation "Killed in Action, March 1917" has been added after the 1913 signature of Edward Jones. These were originally at State School 1589 Invermichie, which operated from 1875 to 1917 near Munro. At its closure the furniture was transferred to Munro, and teachers there signed the desk lid after that time. A tall, unpainted teacher's wooden desk with a single hinged flap as a lid. A ceramic inkwell is set into the top right-hand side. Names have been inscribed under the lid. This ledger contains lists of sales of the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd from 1907 to 1922. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter , erecting many buildings in the Warrnambool area, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, glassware, china and hardware. In 1888 the business became known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furniture, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, hardware and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger is of considerable significance as it is associated with the Swinton family Warrnambool businesses. It gives lists of sales for the years 1907 to 1922 and contains the names of the customers and their purchases over that time. It will be very useful to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, it is among the oldest family businesses in Australia. This ledger has a black cover with brown leather binding with a label on the spine with gold lettering on a red background. The insides of the cover have black and blue mottled patterning and the binding here has been reinforced with white tape. The pages are white with printed red lines. The entries are handwritten in black ink with some names underlined in red ink. The ledger cover is stained and one page is loose.
