Chatham Primary School opened in August 1927 following local pressure for an additional school. Alice Louisa (Louise) Jackson was one of 12 children of George James Jackson and his wife Alice Eleanor (nee Taylor); both of whom were jewellers. One of her brothers, George Hall Jackson, served in WW1. The family lived at 'Handsworth', 7 Russell Street, Surrey Hills. Alice was born 25/9/1892 and died 25/8/1983. She was buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-2010. REF: Personal communication (email) Ruth Theodoridis, her niece, 30/5/2018: Alice trained at the Austin Hospital prior to WW2. She worked there after graduating and became the charge sister of the ward for terminally ill patients, many of whom were TB patients. After she retired from the Austin she nursed elderly and dying people in the Surrey Hills area. She had had a tricycle made especially for her as she could not ride a bicycle. She would always ride in the centre of the road in case the trike tipped over. She left her estate to the hospital. George Edward Doery (was one of 3 children of William Henry Doery and wife Theodora M Bartholomew who were married in 1914 and resided from this time until c1963 at 16 Tower Street, Surrey Hills. The Doery family were stalwarts of the Canterbury Baptist Church. George graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1949. He married Mary Elizabeth Weller (1922-2004) in 1950. He joined the Mont Albert medical Group and practised there until his retirement, The photo was taken to mark his retirement and appeared in a local newspaper. He died 21/9/2011. Percy Henry (Harry) Pledger (1884-1954) and Eleanor Elizabeth George (1888-1963). They married in 1908 in St Peters, Paddington, London. Percy was a tailor in Barnet, Middlesex and the family migrated to Australia in 1923, arriving in Brisbane on 11 December 1923. They settled in Surrey Hills. Percy had a tailoring and later knitwear business at 418 Canterbury Road, almost opposite Alexandra Avenue (? also at another time in Hansen's Terrace in Canterbury Road). The family was musical. Their children were: Son Percy who joined the staff at Allan’s Music House and rose to become their chief accountant. He also taught and played the violin in a number of orchestras. (See individual entry for him - SH1207) Daughter Jessie married Arthur John Marston Bate (1906-1994) in 1941; he was born in Birmingham and his father was also a tailor. Arthur gained BA and MA from the University of New Zealand. He was also primarily a musician, but worked in theatre, broadcasting and teaching in New Zealand and at the State Theatre in Melbourne and the ABC. He was a pilot during WW2 (SERN 255363), rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant and also a RAAF Chaplain. Jessie and Arthur lived in Hawthorn, Ashwood and Mount Waverley. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (CE-213-0029) along with daughter Christine Elizabeth. Stanley Bertram Pledger, along with Harold Sydserf, assisted Stan's brother Percy to establish the Surrey Hills Musical Club in the 1920s . It soon increased to 12 or 15 members, giving 4 concerts a year. They combined with the Surrey Hills Dramatic Society to produce operettas. In time the group expanded to a total of 30 players and became the Camberwell Symphony Orchestra. Stanley Bertram Pledger (1912-1996) is listed in electoral rolls at a number of addresses around Surrey Hills: 1927 - 36 Suffolk Road; 1940s - Essex Road; 1977 - Burwood. All entries consistently give his occupation as manufacturer and it is assumed that this was with the family business. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton was born in Williamstow in c1889, the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. This photo was taken on her engagement to Albert George Harbert. They married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. The house had cost him £240 to build. During his career he built a number of houses in Surrey Hills. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. Spenceycroft was home of James and Elizabeth Rayment, who had a dairy farm in the area in the 1870s. The house was located in Canterbury Road next to the Surrey Hills Presbyterian Church. For many years, it was hidden behind a large fence sheltering it from the noise of traffic along Canterbury Road. It has been claimed that it incorporated part of the original farmhouse built on the site by George Klepper, who planted a vineyard in the area. George’s family was one of a number of German families who settled in Surrey Hills during the later part of the 19th century. In recent years Spenceycroft was sold several times and became increasingly derelict. Since its last sale, it has been demolished. Some of the above may be in error. Photo was taken in front of the front door of 'Camelford', 7 Norris Street. The presence of the red cross suggests that it was taken during the First World War. Two of the couples' surviving sons served in the war - Frederic George Bate (SERN 1945); Richard Alfred Bate (SERN 695); the third was rejected because he had lost a finger in an accident. Richard Bate came to Australia in 1868 from Cornwall - the house was named after the town there. He was a cabinetmaker and settled in Angaston, SA for a year before coming to Melbourne where he worked as a builder. He built ‘Avondale’, 176 Union Road (dem.) circa 1883 as a display home for the Davies family, subdividers of the first land auction in Surrey Hills. He built many houses including his retirement home at 7 Norris Street (demolished after 2000). In the 1880s Richard also built the Shire Hall in Station Street Box Hill, replaced in 1934 by the Box Hill Town Hall. Two of his sons were also carpenters. Richard died in 1937 aged 93 and his wife Annie Matilda died in 1935 aged 83; both are buried in Burwood Cemetery. House was rented out until probate was settled. Occupied in 2000 by Julie Ellis. Joseph Arthur Bailey, described as a manager in electoral rolls, came to Surrey Hills some time before 1903. He was born in Brighton in 1873 and died in Burwood in 1929 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was the son of George Bailey and Georgina Hardwick, who lived in Healesville for a time but 'retired' to Surrey Hills where they are listed at 'Claremont' in Mont Albert Road in 1919. Joseph married Eleanor Beatrice Greenhill in 1897. They had 3 sons - Rupert Aitken (who served in WW1); Kenneth Alan and Edwin George. Prior to living in Trafalgar Street they lived at 9 Victoria Crescent. Date is approximate. George James Jackson and family lived at 7-9 Russell Street from 1900-1950s. He and his wife were manufacturing jewellers and had a workshop adjacent to the house. Their son assisted in the business. George Jackson was very patriotic and hoisted the flag every day. His grandchildren, who lived nearby, were expected to attend on their way to school. On the occasion of the photo, the flag was being hoisted for the return of George's son - also George - from the 1914-1918 war.Black and white photo taken in the front yard of a brick house with another brick building to its right. There is a timber flag pole in the centre with a young boy climbing it. A man wearing a suit and cloth cap is holding a garden fork near a boy holding onto the ropes of the flag. The rotunda was built in 1912 by Clarence Montgomery for the Surrey Hills Progress Association and the local community and dedicated to John Gray, "a highly respected and revered citizen". Surrey Hills Brass Band regularly gave concerts in the rotunda, provided music for regular 'loyal' celebrations and also for silent films held in the gardens. The rotunda was quite elevated off the ground due to the slope of the gardens and the bioscope was stored in the room underneath. This was later used as the infant welfare centre until the Progress Association built a dedicated facility for these purposes. The rotunda was demolished in 1972. Clarence Montgomery, carpenter, was living in Sunbury Crescent in 1914. By 1916 he had moved to 83 Croydon Road where he lived for the rest of his life. Clarence was born in 1869 in Taradale, son of John Montgomery and Jane Ford. He married Sarah Ann Ingram in Echuca in 1894. Their children were: 1. Annie (Mrs P Paynter) born Echuca in 1895 2. William Henry born Echuca in 1897 3. Christina Mary (Mrs F Meyers) born Echuca in 1898 4. Violet (Mrs G Ewing) born Echuca in 1902 5. Clarence George Ingram born Echuca in 1906 and died aged 7 months. Violet became a tailoress and Christina a dressmaker. William became a carpenter like his father. Sarah Ann Montgomery died at their home in June 1932 aged 62 years. Clarence died in August 1946 aged 77 years. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (P-EB-0020). John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. John Gray was born in 1861 in Eldorado. He died on 7 December 1909 in Surrey Hills and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M0472). He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John and Emma had a large family: (Gunner) John Robert Gray (1888, Surrey Hills - 21 June 1917, France) Benjamin Walter Gray (1890, Surrey Hills - 1949, Heidelberg) Herbert Harry Gray (1892, Surrey Hills - 1959, Queensland) William Beckett Gray (1897, Surrey Hills - 1899, Surrey Hills) Norman Douglas Gray (1901, Surrey Hills - 1947, Sydney) Evelyn Lizzie Gray (1906, Surrey Hills - 1983) Evelyn married Reginald Roberts and donated a number of photos to the collection. The donor Violet Ewing (nee Montgomery) was Clarence's daughter. She married George Isaac Henry Ewing (blacksmith) in 1934. They inherited the family home at 83 Croydon Road. Although constructed 5 years after their opening, this rotunda was a central feature of the Surrey Gardens which was planted to a design adapted from one suggested by the renowned landscape gardener and botanist William Robert Guilfoyle (1840-1912). Rotundas were a key feature of many late nineteenth and early twentieth century public parks. This particular rotunda was notable for the Chinoiserie influence reflected in its roof. Surrey Gardens are now regarded as one of the City of Boroondara's heritage gardens and this image is significant as evidence of the design of the rotunda which is no longer extant. It is also significant as evidence of the extent of the role of the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the provision of public facilities. This photo was taken in c1910. ‘Warlingham’ has many typical Victorian features and has been restored and extended. The first owner was Thomas Kennedy Vernon Coburn, a solicitor. His wife was Sara Ethelwyn (Winnie) Cornell; they married on 26 March 1890. They had a large family and their eldest son (Arthur Wheeler Coburn) was born at 'Wannacul' Surrey Hills on 11 January 1891. The Coburns seem to have moved often and Thomas was declared insolvent in 1894, in part it would seem as a result of the land crash. The next owner was George Lumsden, grocer who is believed to have been there 1892-1896. He was married to Emma Louise Sim. During the years c1913-1919 Mr William Joseph Trenerry (manufacturer) and his wife Elsie (nee Capon) lived here. In the 1919 electoral roll the house name is given as 'Mosman', which may be a reference to Elsie Trenerry's origins; she came from Sydney. See also SHP1927 and SHP1384. She married Walter John Rea Dawson. This was the home of the Offszanka family from 1913; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was a furrier. Both he and his wife Ida, nee Schade, (1882-1963) were born in Germany. They married in Victoria in 1908. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. Members of the Offszanka family lived in this property from its beginnings for more than 70 years. The parade was held in celebration of King Edward VII's birthday on 4 July 1902. This was the first public appearance of the German Band formed on 30 May 1902. The leading horseman is Mr Rowland Coe. He is followed by Mr George Robinson, a butcher of Canterbury Road. The man in the white hat is Mr Sam Kellett, businessman of Erasmus Street. Behind him on foot and partly obscured is Mr Alexander McNeill of the Surrey Family Hotel. Band master is Harry Pollard, painter and paper-hanger, and next to him is Constable Hill. The small boy in the sailor suit is Perc Venman of Essex Road and in the buggy near the footpath is Mr and Mrs William Maling. Information came from David Staig senior. Further research: William Saunders Maling, a son of John Butler Maling, was a builder who lived at 17 Balwyn Road, Canterbury. Rowland Coe, a butcher and son of James and Elizabeth Coe of Sunbury Crescent enlisted in AIF in WW1. He later lived at 233 Elgar Road, Box Hill. William Percival Reginald (Perc) Venman was born in Surrey Hills in 1894; he died in Surrey Hills in 1951 and lived at 27 Essex Street for much of his life. He and his wife are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The identity of Sam Kellett of Erasmus Street is questioned. Edward Kellett built 'Yielma' in Erasmus Street but was deceased by 1902. He had 3 sons: Edward Allan (1854-1932); George Henry (1858-1921) and William John (1865-1945).Black and white photo of a number of men on horses leading a parade down Station Street (Windsor Crescent) to Union Road. Albert George Harbert was a local builder. His family home was built c1910. He married Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton in 1912. They had 2 daughters Norma Phoebe and Unice Ada (18 Jan 1918 - 6 Jan 2014). Norma was married to and divorced from Henry Jamieson. Albert died 31/8/1968; Phoebe died 15/6/1971; they are buried in Boroondara Cemetery. Photo probably taken in late 1980s-early 1990s.A black and white photograph of a Queen Anne style house. George Duncan Mrs G D Clucas Mrs P D Blaikie Miss W H Duncan Mrs ..."Miss Hook of Holland" is a musical comedy (described as a "Dutch Musical Incident") in two acts, with music and lyrics by Paul Rubens and book by Austen Hurgon and Rubens. It opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, on 31 January 1907, and had a successful run of 462 performances. A synopsis of the plot can be found at https://www.guidetomusicaltheatre.com/shows_m/miss_hook_holland.htm This was one of a number of productions of the Surrey Hills Amateur Operatic Society during the 1930s. The society formed in 1931 and its first production was "The Cingalee", followed in 1932 by "The Arcadians". Other productions were "Princess Ju-Ju", "The Quaker Girl", "The Hook of Holland" and "The Country Girl". Apart its cultural and social importance, the aim of the Society was to raise funds for charity. Mrs Constance Clucas was a driving force behind the productions. A comprehensive account of the society's activities is found in 'A history of Surrey Hills' Sporting clubs and Cultural Groups" by Ken James. This and other programs of the Surrey Hills Amateur Operatic Society provide insight into the cultural life of Surrey Hills in the 1930s.Cream-coloured stapled program printed in brown of a musical comedy in 2 acts. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of Fred Lyons with his hansom cab, taken between 1916-1920. It shows a horse harnessed to the cab, the door of which is open so that the buttoned seat is visible. The cab has large lamps on each side. Mr Lyons, in hat, is standing on the back of the cab. George's grandfather was James Rayment Snr (1817-1890). He was born in Essex, England. He arrived in Melbourne aboard the “Bengal” in 1840. He married Jane McKnight on 12 March 1861. She died in 1871. James lived in South Melbourne until he married Elizabeth Brown in 1873. He moved to “Spenceycroft” at 654 Canterbury Road in 1880 - the property had a dairy. He moved to 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills (the house still stands) in 1886 but still ran the dairy. He moved back to South Melbourne and died there in 1890. His son James Rayment Jnr (1862-1916) was born in Emerald Hill. He married Harriet Ratten in 1882 and lived at 85-87 Croydon Rd Surrey Hills until 1914. He also owned properties at 70,72,81 and 83 Croydon Road. Harriet died in 1897. He married Victoria Benbow in 1898. In 1912 his occupation was fishmonger. In 1914 he moved to “The Wattles” at 95 Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. In 1919 his wife Victoria owned lots 45,47,49,51,53,55 Durham Road. Surrey Hills. He died 1916 and Victoria died in 1939. James, the third, lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills where he and his wife had a flower and vegetable farm. His brother was George Leslie Rayment (1894-1976), known as Les, the subject of this photo. He was born in Boroondarra. He lived at 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills. In 1914 he enlisted and served in the HQ staff 3rd Light Horse Brigade and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In 1916 he was discharged for family reasons, those being that his father had died and there was no-one at home to support the family in Middlesex Road. In 1918 he married Grace Lewis at the Highfield Methodist Church. In 1919 they moved into “Clovelly”, 94 Durham Road, Surrey Hills. In 1927 his wife Grace died and in 1933 he married Celia Lewis. In 1936, with the help of his brother James, they built their new house at 14 Benwerrin Road, Surrey Hills. Celia died in 1967 and Les in 1976. Les had 2 children Dr Dulcie Grace Rayment and Norma Lesley Rayment. (Information courtesy of Mel Constable; Mel's wife is a Rayment descendant). Les' brother, James Arthur Rayment, was born in Balwyn in 1889. His A.I.F. record states - he joined on the 14 July 1915 to the 5th Field Company Engineers. His father was living in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills at the time of his enlistment. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 22/7/1919. His occupation was carpenter; his religion, Methodist. He was 26 years and 2 months at enlistment and left Australia on 23/11/1915. James Arthur Rayment married Lilian Sarah Smith in 1920 (Ref: Victoria 1920/6780). REF: Mrs Dorothy Legg - James Rayment and his wife Elizabeth lived and farmed in Russell Street in the 1860s. The land was a dairy property and may have included some of the land later owned by the Presbyterian Church. Their sons James and Alex walked to the Balwyn State School. They had a large family - this list may not be complete: William George (1894-1895), George Hall (1896-1984), Gertrude Annie (1898-1989), Edward James (1900-1937), Allan Alfred (1902-1969), Joseph (1904-1954), Henry Hadley (1905-1958), Eleanor Isobel (1911-1984), Sylvia May (1914-2008) and Alice Louise (dates not known). George died in 1950; Alice died in 1924. George James Jackson Mrs alice eleanor jackson Miss alice louisa ...Alice Louisa (Louise) Jackson was one of 12 children of George James Jackson and his wife Alice Eleanor (nee Taylor); both of whom were jewellers. One of her brothers, George Hall Jackson, served in WW1. The family lived at 'Handsworth', 7 Russell Street, Surrey Hills. Alice was born 25/9/1892 and died 25/8/1983. She was buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-2010. REF: Personal communication (email) Ruth Theodoridis, her niece, 30/5/2018: Alice trained at the Austin Hospital prior to WW2. She worked there after graduating and became the charge sister of the ward for terminally ill patients, many of whom were TB patients. After she retired from the Austin she nursed elderly and dying people in the Surrey Hills area. She had had a tricycle made especially for her as she could not ride a bicycle. She would always ride in the centre of the road in case the trike tipped over. She left her estate to the hospital. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Albert and Hazel Crump at their home ‘Hazeldene’, 1 Leopold Crescent in 1916. ‘Hazeldene’ was opposite the end of Albert Crescent. Albert and Hazel lived here from the time of their marriage in 1913 until 1918 when they moved back to Dandenong. This Federation house is of rather unusual design with verandas on the front corners and the centre room projecting. It was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by units. From 1913-1918 Albert was proprietor of the grocery store in Canterbury Road (next to the present Surrey Lodge). This was owned by Alfred Geer and had opened in 1885 by George Sim.
