Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Photograph, black and white, c.1960
This photograph depicts one of the forms of nursing care given by Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS), Sisters in the home of a patient. In this photograph, the Sister is visiting the home of a lady who is confined to a Negative Pressured Ventilator, also known as an 'Iron Lung', which assists her to breathe. The Sister gave both physical and emotional care to the patient, as well as support and advice to those who were caring for her.The Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), later known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), visited patients in their home and gave best practice care in many fields of nursing, and to people of many cultures, throughout its 130 years of expansion. Initial visits not only assessed the specific nursing situation but the situation as a whole. Their patients ranged in age from babes, children, adults to the elderly and referrals were taken from Hospitals, General Practitioners and allied Health facilities. Some of the care the Sisters provided is as follows: – Post-Natal care given to mother and babe, Wound Care following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. Supervising and teaching Diabetic Care, including teaching and supervising people with Diabetes to administer their own Insulin, and administering Insulin to those unable to give their own injections. Administering other injections and setting up weekly medication boxes. The Sisters performed Catheterizations on adults suffering from conditions such as Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Guillan-Barre Syndrome, and when required at school on children for e.g. those with Spina Bifida. The Sisters visited those requiring Cystic Fibrosis support and care; those requiring Haemo-Oncology care, including visiting children at school; those requiring Home Enteral Feeding care, and those requiring IV therapy at home and home Dialysis. Palliative Care was given including pain relief with the use of syringe drivers, personal care as needed, and advice and support to both patient and family. The Sisters provided Stoma management to those needing Urostomy, Ileostomy and Colostomy care and those requiring Continence care. HIV/AIDS nursing care was provided; visits to Homeless Persons were made. Personal care was given to patients ranging in age and with varying mobility problems, such as those with MS, MND, Guillan-Barre Syndrome, Poliomyelistis, Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Acquired Brain Injury, to those following a Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke), those with severe Arthritis and those with a form of Dementia. When necessary the elderly were assisted with personal care and advice given on safety factors with the use of hand rails, bath or shower seats, and hand showers. Rehabilitation with an aim towards independence remained at the forefront of the Sister’s minds and when possible using aids and instruction on safe techniques enabled the person to become fully independent. All care included giving advice and support to the patient and their Carers. The Sisters liaised with the persons Doctor, Hospital and allied Health personal when necessary.Black and white photograph showing a Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) Sister, who has short dark hair; is wearing a white gown over her uniform and her grey peaked hat with attached RDNS badge. Newspaper, The Sun?, "These 6 retired yesterday - after 240 years on job", mid 1950's
Newspaper clipping, photocopied on an A4 sheet from an unknown paper - possibly early 1950's and The Sun about the retirement of Arthur Hill, as the tramway shunter at Elizabeth St. First with cable trams, then electric trams, assisting with poles to do quick turn-arounds. Titled "These 6 retired yesterday - after 240 years on job" Has a photo of him in uniform cap badge Number 1975. Noelle Jones (30/7) advised by email: It's not in Trove, so it either came from the Sun, which is not digitised, or it is after the mid 1950s (which is the most recent digitisation of the other major papers). Les Hill was active in the 1950s as a bowler for South Melbourne (from Trove). So the clipping would have to be 1950s at the earliest." Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Girls Legacy Classes
A black and white photo of the girls' classes at Legacy House in the late 1940s being addressed by a Legatee. It was used in the publication to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Legacy in 1948 (see item 00939). The girls are wearing their cotton tunics that were provided by Legacy for each girl in the classes. They appear slightly different colours in the photo - only green ones are currently held in the Legacy collection. The girls appear to be listening to a Legatee and the blackboard behind them says 'A Merry Xmas to all' so it appears to be taken in December. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy held Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. The photo was donated to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Photograph - 1926 Hudson Super 6 - Riversdale and Warragul Roads, Ray Pearson, 1930s
Photograph of a 1926 Hudson Super 6 parked at the tea room/kiosk on the intersection of Riversdale Road and Warragul Road. Distinguishing features of the car include the triangular badge on the radiator and the unusual disc wheels. The 1926 Hudson also had horizontal radiator shutters. On this vehicle, a finer mesh has been attached in front of the shutters. This is normal practice when insects such as locusts are in plague. At the time, Warragul Road was known as East Boundary Road. Behind the car on the tramway pole is a colour light tramway signal for the single-line section between Warragul Road and the terminus. On 1 July 1928, the Wattle Park line was extended from Boundary Road via Riversdale Road to Elgar Road. It was built as a single track with a passing loop about halfway along, plus a passing loop at the former Boundary Road terminus. The tramway pole has a stop sign and a telephone box as well. In a box of negatives received is an envelope noting the car was owned by Ray Pearson and photo taken during the 1930s. Inside the motor car are two people, the driver, and a lady. In the background is part of the tea rooms located at this corner with a Shell gravity-fed petrol bowser. At the time, petrol was not sold at Service Stations on a Sunday - Sunday trading laws, but they allowed Tea Rooms or kiosks to be open.Yields information the intersection of Warragul and Riversdale Road and MMTB single line signals.Black and white photograph on Velox paper. On rear in pencil "Colour light signal Wattle Park Route, down end loop line, corner of Riversdale and East Boundary Roads".trams, tramways, riversdale road, wattle park, warragul road, motor cars, hudson super 6, shell fuel, signalling, single line, ray pearson -

black and white photograph, first half 20th century
This photograph shows Ina Warren with Jack warren, Linda Warren and Cora Lynn. The photographer was Warren, Helena (1871-1962) who was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. (by Ivy Rodwell in from Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District by Mary Gilbert). This photograph has significance in its association with Helen Frances Warren, a popular Orbost identity who was well known as an accomplished photographer and needleworker,A black / white photograph of a woman with three small children sitting in a pumpkin on water . Photograph - Photo, Launch of Legacy Week - 3rd September 1990 - Aviation art exhibition, 1990
Launch of Legacy Week in 1990 included an exhibition of Aviation Art at Legacy House. Paintings were by Frank Harding of Renmark, South Australia. A newspaper article published on 23 August 1990, mentions that Frank Harding had painted over 50 paintings of aircraft flown by Australians and published a book of the images. It was called 'They flew for the King'. Each painting had been extensively researched to capture a specific moment in the World War 2 combat career of various pilots, flight officers or bomb-aimers. His aim was to honour the fine efforts of these great individuals. Unfortunately the artist died a few weeks after the exhibition and launch of his book. Guests included Bud Tingwell, who flew for the RAAF in World War 2 and other RAAF personnel. It appears to have included a heritage display from the Royal Australian Air Force Museum at the same time. The article is at 01522 also see media release at 01521, more photos of the paintings and guests are in 01524. In 1990 the slogan was "Lest YOU forget" with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Was in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1987 to 1991.An example of an art exhibition being held at Legacy House to promote Legacy during Legacy week in 1990.Colour photo x 6 of an art exhibition for Legacy Week in 1990.legacy week, paintings, planes, warplanes, promotion -
