Book - Wodonga City: A Jubilee History, Howard C Jones, 1998
In 1994 the Rural City of Wodonga celebrated 21 years of city status. The council of that time commissioned Howard Jones to produce an historical record of the city’s first 25 years. This was to cover not only the municipal affairs from 1973 to 1998, but a range of activities across this vibrant, growing community. As a journalist in Wodonga, Howard Jones had closely observed history in the making, including the local government reforms that created a larger city by 1994. Wodonga is now a splendid city with a diverse industrial, commercial and military base, and excellent educational, health and recreational facilities. The book illustrates that these were achieved only by the vision, careful planning and determination of those involved. In 1994 the Rural City of Wodonga celebrated 21 years of city status. Melbourne Legacy
Document, History & purposes of residences
A paper which was delivered to the Legacy in Victoria Conference in 1980, detailing Melbourne Legacy's involvement in housing the children of Legacy widows since 1942. By 1950 Melbourne Legacy administered four houses - Holmbush, Stanhope, Blamey House and Harelands - and cared for approximately 100 children. The houses were designed to be as homely as possible, and each one was largely autonomous. Children, many of whom came from country Victoria, would go to their own homes during school holidays and the Christmas season. The stated objectives were to 'pass out into the world young men and women with high ideals of citizenship, who are self-reliant and self-supporting.' Also 'to provide affection, security and a future goal and essential discipline.' The country Clubs and Groups would send provisions such as preserved fruit, cheese, eggs, honey, citrus fruit, butter, and potatoes throughout the year to support the residences. Numbers of residents declined during the 70s, and in 1975 a Residences Committee recommended that Blamey House and Harelands should be closed, leaving only Stanhope in operation, the first Blamey House having closed in 1955 with Holmbush being renamed the second Blamey House. By 1980 the only remaining house was Stanhope with an average occupancy of 20. See Cat. No. 00785 for a first hand account of being a resident at Stanhope.Melbourne Legacy established residences to aid children of deceased servicemen complete their education, take further education and find employment. The document reveals details of the residences through the years. It shows the effort the Legatees invested in looking after Junior Legatees and how seriously they took this responsibility.White foolscap paper x 3 pages, with black type. Some pencilled ticks and bracketing, W.T. Melbourne Legacy
Document, History of Blamey House (Beaumaris) property, 1949
Black and white photocopies of articles and information about the first Blamey House owned by Legacy between 1947 and 1956. It includes articles about the opening in November 1949 with Sir Thomas Blamey in attendance. It shows the property was described as "a home, a huge rambling weatherboard house with a swimming pool, flood-lit tennis court, and four acres of beautifully kept lawns and gardens." The title deed was handed over to Legacy by Sir Robert Knox, the chairman of trustees of Blamey House, Melbourne (the servicemen hostel that had been operating during the war). Other pages show the property had been built in 1930 as a holiday home for Toorak business man Mr Arthur Jack and his wife Ms Langlands-Jack. It was sold to James Picken by 1941 and it was known as 'Mossgiel'. The Pickens remained owners until 1947 when it was purchased on behalf of Legacy with money donated by the Blamey House Trustees (the servicemen hostel that operated during the war) to be used as a toddlers and childrens' home. When Legacy no longer required the property it was sold to the Beaumaris RSL (or it's precursor RSSALIA) as its clubrooms. There was controversy in 2015 when it was sold to developers for housing. The pages were copied from items held by Sandringham and District Historical Society in February 2022.Records different facts about the property that was Blamey House Beaumaris that could be useful even though there are discrepancies with other known facts about Blamey House (the Hostel) trustees donation to Legacy.Black and white A4 photocopy x 20 pages of collected information about the property in Beaumaris before and after it was held by Legacy.blamey house, beaumaris, properties -

Book, Harrap, On heroes : hero-worship and the heroic in history, ????
Based on a series of lectures delivered in 1840, Thomas Carlyle's On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History considers the creation of heroes and the ways they exert heroic leadership. From the divine and prophetic (Odin and Muhammad) to the poetic (Dante and Shakespeare) to the religious (Luther and Knox) to the political (Cromwell and Napoleon), Carlyle investigates the mysterious qualities that elevate humans to cultural significance. By situating the text in the context of six essays by distinguished scholars that reevaluate both Carlyle's work and his ideas, David Sorensen and Brent Kinser argue that Carlyle's concept of heroism stresses the hero's spiritual dimension. In Carlyle's engagement with various heroic personalities, he dislodges religiosity from religion, myth from history, and truth from "quackery" as he describes the wondrous ways in which these "flowing light-fountains" unlock the heroic potential of ordinary human beings.p.299.non-fictionBased on a series of lectures delivered in 1840, Thomas Carlyle's On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History considers the creation of heroes and the ways they exert heroic leadership. Based on the research of modern historians as well as a wealth of primary source material, Churchill's popular and readable A History of the English-Speaking Peoples was respected by scholars as well as the public in its day - a testament both to its integrity as a work of historical scholarship and its accessibility to laypeople. Churchill used primary sources to masterful effect, quoting directly from a range of documents, from Caesar's invasions of Britain to the beginning of the First World War, to provide valuable insights into those figures who played a leading role in British history.
