This plan of Lum Road Estate includes layout of roads, gardens, building and carparks. From 1970 until August 1971 Robin Boyd and his practice Romberg & Boyd Architects worked on designs for housing on the Lum Road Estate, Wheelers Hill. Berenice Harris, Linley Vellacott and Karl Fender drew many of the sketch plans for the project homes, while Robin Boyd drew the perspectives. This is one of the two Wiseman brothers' homes built in Widford Street in 1887. They were named Ashleigh and Sawbridgeworth and were similar. When the Wisemans became bankrupt, with the collapse of the land boom in the 1890s, the houses remained in the estate and were tenanted. At the close of the first world war, both were taken over by the Army as hospitals. This photo is of Ashleigh which became Infectious Diseases Hospital No. 5. Sawbridgeworth was the staff hospital. The photo was taken in 1919. This house was later bought by Thomas Shaw Logan, the well-known auctioneer. On his death, the house was demolished and the property subdivided. The other house, Sawbridgeworth, was bought by the MIssion of St James and St John and then became St. Agnes Girls Home from 1925 until 1963. Diary was owned by Evelyn White and was found in the estate of Neil Russell. It was donated to Museum Victoria in 2006 by Neil's son, Barry. MV passed on the diary to Southern Sherbrooke Historical Society who kept it after ascertaining that Healesville Historical Society didn't want it.A leatherbound diary with closing flap and press stud closure, and an expanding pocket at the front. There is a pencil holder. The first 254 pages have been torn out. Pages 255 to 318 have printed information of benefit to GPs. The remaining pages, 1-150, are a diary plus engagements list. There are pencil scribble marks on some pages. Handwritten lists of women patients and dates, presumably when women gave birth. Also lists of patients and death dates. 'Healesville' is mentioned alongside some names.

Separate panels of lace, dropping from the waist are the only form of decoration on the skirt. It is probable that the 19th century cream-coloured lace on the bodice and cuffs is a later addition. The lace extends in a long loop at the font of the skirt. The bodice has a high round neck, later modified to a V-shape. The dress must at one stage have been reconfigured or strengthened at the join of the bodice and skirt, as there is evidence of the use of new machine stitching. The dress is fully lined with a stiffened cotton lining fabric. Apart from minor staining, the dress is in excellent condition. The dress is the earliest complete costume in the collection. The bodice features large ornamental buttons from neck to waist, covered in a figured silk fabric of the same colour as the dress. The gown has extensive pin tucking on the sleeves, on the flounce of the skirt, and on the long train. The line of the outfit is emphasised by the flattened front, which is typical of the period. Single-piece, floor length, gold silk taffeta evening dress featuring the use of a very long fishtail train to which is attached a silk cord to allow the wearer to hold it above the floor. The dress includes a number of decorative features including the extensive use of box pleats on the sleeves and on the hem of the skirt; contrasting gold and cream braiding and tassles; and the extensive use of ruching on the bodice at the front. Due to the age and fine quality of the silk taffeta used, there is evidence of the degradation of the fabric on one shoulder and a tear in the rear of the skirt. This King George III 1797 penny, colloquially described as a ‘Cartwheel’ because of its large size and thick rim, was manufactured in Great Britain from 1797-99. The penny and the twopence were the first coins shipped to New South Wales by the British Government. In 1800, Governor King issued a proclamation that forbade their export. This coin is one of the 132,000 coins sent to Australia in 1800. It is not uncommon to find cartwheel pennies used as containers. They were reputedly used to conceal a more valuable coin or for smuggling. The locket is designed to be worn as a pendant. The two hand-tinted encased oval portraits are of an elderly woman on the left and an elderly bearded man on the right. The inlaid locket is probably Indian given the style of the floral inlay on the front and reverse. Margaret Gaunt is dressed in a pale silk dress, typical of the 1860s, with a buttoned bodice and wide sleeves. She appears to be holding a book in her right hand. The sitter was the half sister of Mary Ann Lawrence (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' and 'Field Place', Kew. She married Charles Gaunt (1842-1916) at St John's Church of England, Launceston in 1868. Alice (Henty) Hindson, born in Portland in 1852, died at 'Field Place' in Kew in 1932. She was the daughter of Francis Henty. The portrait has added artistic and aesthetic significance as a signed photographic portrait by Lafayette Photographic Studios, Collins Street, Melbourne. The studio flourished from 1906-1930. Photographic portrait of Alice (Henty) Hindson (1852-1932), one of the daughters of Francis Henty and Mary Ann Lawrence, taken and signed by the internationally renowned London photographer 'Lafayette'. The oval photograph is encased in a brown calf skin case. The portrait represents the sitter in middle age, wearing a black dress and a white lace collar. Alice Henty had married John Hindson in 1875 at Trinity Church, East Melbourne. The couple were to live at 'Shrublands' in Canterbury from 1883. Her husband died in 1919 and it is likely that the portrait was taken after that date. She was to donate 'Shrublands' to the Anglican Church in 1923, after which it became St John's Home for Boys (and girls). Alice Henty's sister Louisa Henty died at her home 'Field Place in 1924. Alice was also to die at Field Place in 1932. At ‘Dalriada’, previously ‘Clifton’, 77 Union Road, corner Bona Vista Avenue (dem.) Home of Charles and Sarah Steele pictured with Bertrand Steele and wife Amy, daughter of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. ‘Dalriada’ was built on Woodhead’s land. In 1892 Bertrand purchased the pharmacy on S.W. corner Canterbury/Union Road and moved it to the ‘new’ Surrey Hall. By 1894 he had returned it to its former site where he remained in business until 1900 when he married Amy and went overseas. In 1910 Bertrand Steele became Professor of Chemistry in Brisbane. As his son-in-law, Bertrand was executor of the estate of John Woodhead of ‘Kirklands’. Charles Henri Dillon Steele (1869-1935) - Parents: Samuel Madden Steele and Harriet Sarah Acock. He married Sarah Margaret Russell. They had 2 daughters Margaret Dillon Steele who married William Brayshay Woodhouse, dentist, and Harriet Vevers Steele. From Dentistry Museum site: “Charles Henry Dillon Steele was one of the pioneers of Dentistry in Victoria. He was born in England in 1869 and came to Melbourne in 1889. He was registered by the Dental Board in 1890 and practiced in Collins Street until his death in 1935. His daughter Margaret Dillon (Nancy) Steele graduated BDSc Melbourne in 1929 and obtained the degree of DDS in Toronto in 1931. She returned to Melbourne and rejoined her father in practice at 90 Collins Street and later at 147 Collins Street. In 1935 she married William Brayshaw Woodhouse (BDSc, DSc Melbourne) who bought the practice of Mr. Steele in that year and continued in practice there until 1980. Their son Anthony Dillon Woodhouse graduated BDSc (Melb) 1958 and DDS (Toronto) in1966 and continued in the old family practice established by Mr. Steele."
