Located in the collection of Eltham District Historical Society, this envelope contains four sepia prints ranging in dates from 1923 to 1956. The envelope is postmarked 24 Apr 1958 and on the reverse is noted "Accepted 30/4/58". On the face is witten in pencil "Try 18" being No. 18 Russell Crescent, Fitzroy North. Also noted in blue ink "Mother Louie (or Louise) Down - Sister Hilda". The wedding photo is unidentified except for the date 22 May 1956. It was taken by The Lock wood Studios. Other photos are described on their reverse sides as: "Olive McKay, Mr Pinkerton and self" "Uncle Donald and Aunt Florrie, July 1923" "Jessfield, May 12th, 1928" It is not known why they are held by EDHS or the significance/relationship of the people to the Eltham district. Baker as a member of the Board of Management, discussing the Residences Review Sub-Committee Report of April 1972. (Cat. No. 01674). L/- Carter challenges many of the items in the report in quite an emphatic manner before offering his own recommendations in the first letter; not content with this lengthy letter, he revisits the matter only six days later and 'urges' the Board of Management to appoint a sub-committee to examine not only accommodation of problem children, but also whether Melbourne Legacy funds are being used in the most effective way. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. 1993 was Legacy's 70th Anniversary and the luncheon followed the WWI meeting on Thursday 12th August. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward (seen in the Answer newsletter article with his mother Myrtle). Ron Austin, a World War 1 veteran spoke to entertain the ladies.The photos include George Woodward adding a moustache on another legatee. See also 00908 for black and white photos of the same day. WW1 Circa 1914-1918 Sent to Chiltern resident Mrs. Wm Fuge Cornishtown via Chiltern. WW1 The Great War 1914-1918Buff coloured WW1 Greeting Postcard "To My Dear Sister". Item has an internal card within an attached lace envelope. The card contained within has a number of commonwealth flags around the edges as a border and the card has the wording "Happy Birthday Greetings". Internal lace overlay is made of silk and has embroidery around the edges with small red roses and green stems and a larger embroided pansy flower in the middle of purple and yellow colours, with two small bordering elderflowers of light blue colouring. France October 14th 1917 Card reads as follows: Dear Ethel, your letter to hand 12th August and pleased to hear you are all well. Wishing you and all the compliments of the season I remain your loving brother Bert. Address annotated on the card : Mrs Wm Fuge Cornishtown Via Chiltern Victoria Australia. This photo shows the Storm Bird at the end of the jetty and the Wangrabelle in the foreground. Both ships were well known traders. the Wangrabelle became beached and wrecked in 1916 and the Storm Bird became obsolete when the railway from Bairnsdale to Orbost arrived in 1916. (ref. Story of Gippsland Shipping - J.C. Bull) At the start of the river trade goods were shipped from Marlo to Melbourne but when the railway reached Bairnsdale this became unprofitable and the ships plied only between Marlo and Cunninghame. Eventually river transport became economically unviable. The Wongrabelle is still buried in the sands of the entrance of the Snowy River (albeit where the entrance used to be). It took from April 11th 1912 to August 12th 1912 for the loss of the Wongrabelle to be complete, the final entry in the Orbost Shipping Co. records reads:- "The Wongrabelle is completely covered in sand." (ref River, Road, Railway Newsletter O.D.H.S.) World War 1 1914-18 affected most families in Moorabbin Shire with large numbers of young men enlisting in the Australian Infantry Force. Alonzo Sheldrake Box , a pavier of Oakleigh, Victoria served at Gallipoli, France and Somme . When he returned home Oakleigh, like many Australian Towns, celebrated his safety and courage by presenting him with this Gold Medal. Each town also mourned the loss of so many soldiers and collected money from the residents to build War Memorials on which were engraved the names of the deceased soldiers. Alonzo Sheldrake Box (1851 - 1958) was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who lived in Box Cottage , East Brighton - now Ormond -. He married Mary Louisa Closter on June 12th 1918 at Holy Trinity, Church of England, Oakleigh.Alonzo Box was the son of John Box, who migrated from Sussex, England with his brother William Box c1855 , and established a market garden in East Brighton that was part of the Henry Dendy ' Special Survey Brighton 1841'A gold metal medal with top crest , 2 attachment rings, engraved on both sides presented to Alonzo Sheldrake Box 'For God King and Country. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence.Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. This is the annual photograph of Grades 111 and 1V for pupils of the Orbost State School. The 19th of March 1886 proved an important day in the lives of many early settlers in the Orbost area, because on this day the Orbost State School opened. The fact that the school had first operated tem­porarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of Head Teacher Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second Head Teacher, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school now had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. This was reflected in the provision of a larger classroom in 1898. This item is associated with the history of education in Orbost.A black / white photograph mounted on brown car. Diary covers the period from 9 March 1917 to 10 February 1918 on the Western Front. Lowe was later (Aug 1918) to be awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the Somme. Military Medal 'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this man, just previous to the attack showed great devotion to duty in laying and maintaining alternative routes up to the front line, and after the attack had commenced he acted as linesmen, and throughout the operation, during which the lines were cut on several occasions, he went out under heavy shell and machine gun fire and repair the lines thereby enabling communication to be maintained and valuable information reaching Headquarters without delay. His splendid example inspired his comrades to volunteer to continue this most important work should he become a casualty.' AVM Alan Reed AO, Tan Son Nhut, Saigon, June - November 1968. I was an Australian exchange officer flying RF4C Phantoms and training United States Air Force (USAF) pilots and navigators to go to Vietnam. I felt I needed some Vietnam experience if I were to do my job as an instructor. I managed to persuade both the US and Australian Governments to let me go the the war. I claim to be one of the few people 'invited' to the war because, for protocol reasons. the USAF could not order me to go. I was on exchange with the USAF from 1967 to 1970. My job was to fly reconnaissance missions in South and North Vietnam. My navigator was from North Carolina so we named our aircraft the 'Carolina Kangaroo'. All up, I flew 100 missions in Vietnam. Sir Robert Gordon Menzies Australia's 12th Prime Minister, served April 1939 to 1941 and a second term from 1949 to 1966. The Prime Ministers Avenue is a collection of bronze bust portraits of the Prime Ministers of Australia, located at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens in Ballarat, Victoria. The Prime Ministers' portraits are commissioned after the incumbent term of each Prime Minister by the City of Ballarat. The City of Ballarat has taken responsibility for commissioning the busts after funds set aside by politician Richard Armstrong Crouch were exhausted in 2014. Crouch originally donate money to pay for six busts, the first of which was unveiled in 1940. The collection of prime ministers' busts are unique in Australia, representing the only sculptural portrait collection of all past Australian Prime Ministers. The exact creation date of this chatelaine is unknown, however the hallmarks and engravings on some of the attached objects indicate that this chatelaine was made in the late 1890s. The shark tooth and the liberty bell attached to the chatelaine suggest that the item once belonged to an Australian who had connections to America. The compact, scent bottle lid, and feminine design of the other objects suggest that this wasowned by a woman. The name on the plate indicates that this object may have belonged to someone with the surname Heine. The hallmarks on the scent bottle lid and the compact indicate that they were made in Birmingham, England in the late 1890s, and that the compact was made by H. Matthews. Chatelaines where used by both men and women, usually fastened to a belt or pocket, and small household objects were attached to the main body of the chatelaine by chains.
