Education in Mount Beauty began in the 1940s when the SECV constructed the town of Mount Beauty for their workers and staff. The educational facilities included a kindergarten, a primary / consolidated school and a secondary college. Mount Beauty education was highly valued by the residents of Mt Beauty and families in the Kiewa Valley. In the 1940s and 1950s it was very modern with new buildings and included the latest in teaching aids and technology. In the early 20th century, smocking appears in women’s magazines and sewing manuals on garments, domestic textiles and children’s wear. The 1930s and 1940s were the heyday of patterns and innovative stitch development. Embroidery has always had a great appeal to women, as it needs few tools. Historically the skills were taught within the family or in primary schools. Articles to make or embroider had been available in kits since the 1850s. Fancy work, the opposite of plain sewing, enjoyed great popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Companies which manufactured threads often produced instruction guides and patterns. These nylon stockings are a sample of the type of stockings worn by women between the late 1940s and the early 1960s. Before the Second World War women’s stockings were made mostly of silk, cotton and wool. Nylon stockings became popular with the introduction of nylon in the 1940s and continued to be used (in conjunction with suspender belts) until the 1960s when the pantihose, a thin nylon form of tights covering the legs up to the waist, was introduced and became the favored leg covering for women. Stockings can still be purchased and worn in some circumstances. These stockings are of interest as an example of the items of clothing worn by women in the mid 20th century. The KHES was constructed from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Jack Watson worked on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme for 39 years. standard style of a jacket battle dress from the late 1940s to 1982; it was used for parade dress; this jacket was worn by a warrant officer class 2 of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.This jacket has historical significance because it representative of a standard style service battle dress worn by soldiers of the Australian Army Post WW2 until the introduction of the modern polyester cotton uniforms. It is also in excellent condition, which is special considering it's age.
