Melbourne University Old Physics Building (1889) was designed by Reed, Henderson and Smart. The victory became an international landmark in the history of the labour movement. Another plaque reads: This, the original building of the University was built of Tasmanian freestone between 1854 and 1857 to the design of F.M. White, architect. It was for many years the University's administrative centre, library, lecture rooms, and professorial residences. The east and west wings were extended in 1930 to the design of J.S. Gawler. In 1969, the quadrangle was completed by the addition of the southern wing which contains the council chamber, designed by R.E. These two sheets show the 1897 plans drawn up by the Victorian Railways for the erection of the Warrnambool Railway Station building. It is a two-storey building still existing today. The railway came to Warrnambool in 1890 and they must have used temporary buildings for seven years before this railway building was erected. It had offices, booking counter and public facilities on the ground floor and housing for the Station Master on the first floor. The building erected was a typical design for country town railway stations and many of similar design were erected in the 1880s and 90s. These plans are important because they show clearly the design of the Warrnambool Railway Station buildings when they were first erected in the 1890s.They will be very useful for researchers. The coming of the railway was a significant event in Warrnambool’s history and did much to make the port and shipping a less viable proposition.These are two architect’s plans and drawings of the Warrnambool Railway Station building (1897). The drawings are black and white and the first plan shows the ground floor plan and the first floor plan and the outbuildings. The second plan shows drawings of the building with its elevation to the platform and its elevation to Merri Street. There are two stamps of the Railways Department, Melbourne. Large group of people standing and seated on the footpath. The original Salvation Army Barracks is now at the rear of the present Citadel a red brick building. Stawell Corps was opened in the year 1884 in the month of May. The first meeting was conducted in a Church but afterwards the old market (area present Library) was secured for meetings. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. Mylon Travel Centre opened at 152 High Street, Wodonga on 21 November 1992. It allowed Mylons to extend their service for holidaymakers. Mylon’s staff can help will all holiday needs, including answering questions about destinations as well as booking tours, accommodation, concert seats and express coach bookings. The new Centre had a computerised resto ervation system with direct link-up for world-wide reservations, During more than 100 years of service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and tourism. The Border United Co-operative Breweries Limited was formed in 1911 by the amalgamation of The Albury Brewing and Malting Company Limited and The Anglo-Australian Brewery Company Proprietary Limited which operated breweries in Beechworth, Tallangatta and Yarrawonga. The Anglo-Australian Brewery was owned by the Billson family. By August the new plant was operating near the Union Bridge on the border of Victoria and NSW as shown in this photo. However the enterprise failed in August 1914 when not enough co-operative shares could be sold and also due to declining water quality. In December 1914 its spirit merchant’s license was transferred to the newly established Murray River Proprietary Company. In 1922, the brewery and 32 acres of land was sold to Mr E E Waite. The old brick Murray River Sawmill office was demolished around 1975. This appears to be part of one of the office buildings associated with the sawmill, taken in shadow, with the building well back on the block, on the bridge side. There is a dirt driveway in front of the building and stacks of timber next to the chimney side of the building. Trees are visible behind these stacks of timber. Two stacks of timber (1x 4 blocks high, 1 X 3 blocks high) are in front of the building between the window and the chimney This relates to photographs P000106, P000105 Sawmills in the Echuca area were historically and socially significant being a large employer in the area. The Murray River sawmill was one of the biggest and longest operating sawmills in the area. The house was built in 1850 to resemble a Scottish crofter's cottage. It was at one time a postal depot, when a bag was fixed behind a slot in one of the front doors. It was also known as Clark Cottage. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. MATE's WODONGA - T. H. Mate opened his first store in Albury in 1850. The company was sold to Burns Philp in 1946, although they continued trading as Mate’s. Burns Philp policy was to maintain the identity of stores they took over with the same staff and management. The Mate’s store in Wodonga was built by local builders A. B. and M. A. Chick. It was a 3 level development in High Street opposite Woodland Grove. It included a mezzanine eating area. Mate’s closed in 1976 when Burns Philp sold the business to Waltons. In 1987 they became Venture Stores. This building also later became Highpoint and Fosseys which closed in 2000. In 2023 it is the Gateway Health building.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.2 black and white images of the Mate's Store in Wodonga.
