This is a Rose's Australia stereocard of Morningside. Built c1875, Morningside was the residence of John and Catherine D'Alton, it was located on site of present (2010) Colonial Motor Inn. c1900 it was owned by Langley family and was taking in paying guests. In 1909 it was leased by James and Grace D'Alton who continued to run a small guest house. In the late 1920's a small building was erected to serve as PO and telephone exchange. C1980 the guest house closed. In 1982 Morningside was demolished.A computer print of a State Library of Victoria Catalogue entry for a stereograph card. There is a picket fence with a gate in the foreground and two people leaning on either side of the gate facing each other (as though in conversation). The Stripper was invented by John Ridley in 1843, while trying to overcome harvest labour shortage. In the early ays of Colonial South Australia a labour force was essential to harvest the wheat crop quickly before the grain shook out and fell to the ground. The stripper solved this problem, as t could strip 10 acres [4 hectares], handling approx. 180 bushels [5 tonnes] per day. This replaced 14 men using scythes.Strippers were used in this area between 1870's to the early 1900's.Then the Stripper Harvestors took over this processprinciple of the stripper----The wheat heads were knocked off the straw by a fat revolving beater ,and the grain, mixed with the husks and short straw, was propelled to the rear tin box. Along with the wrecks of the Light of the Age (1868 - American-built wooden clipper ship) and Sussex (1871 - Blackwall frigate) nearby these vessels represent the three major design classes, and span the evolution of commercial and immigrant sailing ships used by the British in the colonial Australian trade in the last half of the nineteenth century. Gift to troops in France 1914-15. Decorative brass tin sent by Princess Mary to members of the British, Colonial and Indian Armed Forces for Christmas 1914. Over 426,000 of these tins were distributed to those serving on Christmas Day 1914. Max Havelaar: Or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company (Dutch: Max Havelaar, of de koffi-veilingen der Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappy) is an 1860 novel by Multatuli (the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker), which played a key role in shaping and modifying Dutch colonial policy in the Dutch East Indies in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the novel, the protagonist, Max Havelaar, tries to battle against a corrupt government system in Java, which was then a Dutch colony.The novel was central to the growing public awareness of corruption and exploitation by the Dutch colonial master in the East Indies. Published in 1860 it is considered the highpoint of Dutch literature in the 19th century. Hard cover book by Dr.J.van den Bergh published in 1920 containing a newly selected collection of extracts of the publication "Ideen" (Ideas) by Multatuli. The book is in 2 parts and contains about 600 pages. There are a number of drawings as illustrations.The illustrator is Anton van der Valk.

Erected in the township of Miners Rest in 1920 in remembrance of fallen soldiers, this granite plinth cenotaph stands at the West end of an Avenue of Honour with 25 trees. The memorial is of Harcourt colonial granite, with bronze face plates, and contains the names of twenty-four soldiers of the district who sacrificed their lives at war. The monument was designed by the well-known sculptor, Mr F. W. William Box1834-1902 and Elizabeth Avis Box 1835-1913 came to Australia with his parents George and Mary Cripps-Box and siblings in 1856. Caroline Box, the eldest daughter of George and Mary Cripps-Box, remained in England working as a cook until she joined the family in Australia in 1863. William Box with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box at first leased market garden allotments in Brighton that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. In 1868 and 1869 they purchased 2 blocks with a pioneer’s cottage in Jasper Road East Brighton ( now Ormond / McKinnon ) where they established a market garden, built a 2nd house and raised 13 children. In 1908 Elizabeth sold most of the land retaining 1 acre with the dwellings in which she resided with her two daughters until her death 1913. The original pioneer cottage was reconstructed in 1984 and is known as Box Cottage Museum William & Elizabeth Avis- Box settled in the pioneer Cottage in Jasper Road East Brighton 1868 and established a market garden whilst raising their 13 children. This Cottage was reconstructed in Joyce Park, Ormond 1984 and is the home of City of Moorabbin Historical Society. In 1960 many local residents responded to a call for the donation of historical artefacts and the Box Cottage Museum now preserves this eclectic collection for the community. In the early days of colonial Australia the governors and the land holders saw advantage in singling out certain First Nations people as leaders and distinguishing them in some way. This chest plate was issued to "King George" of the Koenghegulluk Clan of the Djargurd Wurrung whose Country was near Lake Colongulac. This chest plate is inscribed "King Colungulac" and is held in the Museum Victoria collection.
