The Sydney Opera House construction began on 2 March 1959. Danish architect Jørn Utzon who had won the competition arrived in Australia with a bronze plaque that can still be seen on the steps today and was placed at the point where the axes of the two halls intersect. Due to problems with the site and construction Utzon resigned and Australian architect Peter Hall took over. The Opera House was completed on 20 October 1973 and has seen many remarkable operatic and musical performances. Currently in 2017 it is undergoing renovations. Four similar but larger brackets were on the facade of Pindar's house. this is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. This smaller example was most likely part of a chimney piece from a grand room on the first floor. This photo is another view of the brick Ticket Box (58.1) on the right side of main gates and next to the former Dane House. In 1999 the house was owned by Stawell City Council and used as the Community Neighborhood House. It was demolished some years ago. Melbourne Legacy would hold Christmas parties for junior Legatees at Government House for many years due to the Governor of Victoria being patron of Legacy. The children are wearing Legacy tags. The year is 1963. One of the photos appeared in a newspaper article about Legacy in 1965 (see item 01237). A slide image of the old Legacy House in Market Street from 1957. It shows children and people gathered to go on an outing to the sea known for many years as Operation Float. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. A small 'Legacy House' sign can just be seen between the bus and the sign post. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meeting and the girls classes on the second floor of the building but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. Finally it was sold in 1954 and Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government. As part of the conditions of the donation it was named in memory of David H Dureau. Renovations were needed to the 289-299 Swanston St building so this slide shows that Legacy were still in the Market St building in 1957 while they occurred. Organised sport and clubs began in 1919 with the formation of the Junior Technical School Students' Association. Clubs included the Rifle Club, Wireless Club, Senior Cadet team, Photography Club and Bugle Band. Sport was the Associations main concern. The House system was developed and boys competed within this structure. In 1926 the North Central Junior Technical School Sports Association was formed. Students from the district competed against each other in football, cricket and tennis. The number of schools increased and more sports were introduced. Ballarat Junior Technical School was a strong competitor. Many ex-students made a mark in sport out of the Ballarat area. The photograph shows Ray Bilney - second from the left. Born 2 November 1945, Ray began cycling aged 10. In 1963 he was Australian Junior Road Champion. From 1964 to 1966 he was Australian Senior Road Champion. He was in the Australian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and came 4th in the race, aged 18 years. In 1966 he went to the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica and won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970. Ray was Ballarat Sportsman's Club Sportsman-of-the-Year 1965/66 and inducted into their Hall of Fame. In 1965 Ray was Cyclist-of-the-Year and won the coveted Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy. In May 2013, Ray was inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall-of-Fame. During his time at the Junior Technical School, he sporting abilities were evident and in 1961 he was Top Sportsman of the school. The same year he was one of eight boys chosen to be Prefects of the school. He is an Alumni of Federation University. Murray Comrie Collection. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1960s. The store close for business in 1916, and the building was demolished in 1926 after falling into disrepair. Originally built by James Ray in the early 1860s, London House was centrally located in Tarnagulla's commercial area and was a very successful enterprise for many decades. Several boathouses were built in Kew and Fairfield in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They included Chipperfield’s ‘Moorings’ and floating pontoon. The substantial two-storey house was named the Moorings, and incorporated an upper storey residence. The Moorings was almost washed away in the 1916 floods, and in 1934 almost totally submerged when the Yarra River rose 26 feet in 14 hours. Following the 1934 flood, the house was restored. The floating pontoon, sometimes referred to as a ‘kiosk’ or ‘canteen’, was used to store canoes. Both were removed in 1972 for the construction of the Eastern Freeway.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s.
