An early black and white photograph of a Cobb & Co coach at "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria. An early black and white photograph of a Cobb & Co coach at "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria. "The Hermitage" was built by photographer John William Lindt as a home and guesthouse in 1894. John Lindt had previously photographed the mountain scenery of the Black Spur and purchased 71 acres and subseqently built his home and guesthouse from where he continued his career. "The Hermitage had a garden designed by John Lindt's friend, Ferdinand von Mueller, who was at one stage the Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The garden featured New Guinea tree houses from which John Lindt made frequent panoramas of his property and the surrounding forest of towering mountain ash. Aged 81 Lindt died of heart failure during disastrous bushfires on 19 February 1926 at the Hermitage. He was survived by his wife Catherine who continued to run ‘The Hermitage’ guest house before she retired to the city. Postcard - Post Card, The Rose Series / The Rose Stereographs, The Lovers Walk in the Gardens, Port Fairy
The Port Fairy Botanical Gardens were formed in 1856 making it one of the earliest gardens in Victoria. The first curator was James Prior, he was paid fifty-two pounds per annum. He was an outstanding curator having been apprenticed to the trade in England at the age of 12, his brother Edward in later years was the Curator of the Koroit Gardens. Prior retired in 1903. During the years of his curatorship Port Fairy was said to have the best gardens outside the city of Melbourne, he was constantly in touch with Baron Von Mueller and later Guilfoyle of the Royal Botanical Gardens of Melbourne. In the early years plants from all over the world were planted here with varying rates of success many of them sent by Baron Von Mueller. In the 1930’ and 40’s the gardens were still very beautiful, and the curator was Roy Manuell. The beautiful iron gates at the entrance were destroyed in the 1946 floods and were replaced in 1989 using some of the material from the original gates. From the 1950’s on the gardens went into a state of decline, much being taken up by the caravan park until in 1986, after a public meeting ‘Friends of the Gardens’ was founded when the entrance section was restored. Leisure object - Stereographs, view-finder & photo cards, Stereographic Photos Copyright 1911
Stereo-graphs were popular 1850 - 1930 Most stereoscopic methods present two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. Stereo-graphs feature two photographs or printed images positioned side by side about two and half inches apart, one for the left eye and one for the right. When a viewer uses a stereoscope, a device for viewing stereo-graphs, the two-dimensional images are combined by the brain to give the perception of 3D depth. The London Stereoscopic Company quickly developed technologies for mass - producing stereo-graphs; and between 1854 and 1856 the company sold over half a million stereo-graphs. Small, hand-held metal and timber steroeographic view-finder. The metal goggles are engraved with a free-flowing design. The rim of the goggles are covered in red velvet. A timber handle is attached with a metal hinge to the timber extension that has a wire frame to hold the stereo photographs. The streographic photos comprise 2 identical black and white photos mounted, side by side on brown card.Photocards 'ROSE'stereographs, stereoscopes, photographs, view-finder, wheatstone charles, london, moorabbin, melbourne, bentleigh, early settlers, market gardeners, entertainment, stereograph cards -

The house was built in 1850 to resemble a Scottish crofter's cottage. It was at one time a postal depot, when a bag was fixed behind a slot in one of the front doors. It was also known as Clark Cottage. It has since been demolished.Sepia image of the first stone building in Sorrento, with description and signature of George Coppin.Sorrento The first building (signed) Geo. Coppinhouses
