The former Ballarat Gaol was commenced in 1856 and completed in 1862, This view looks up Lydiard Street South, and was taken before the Ballarat Courthouse was built south of the gaol in 1868. The wall was built from quarried basalt with local bricks. A system of burning the lime mortar between the joints and the shape of the wall meant it had a high degree of stability. From 1870 on more buildings were constructed and these became the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat. The Gaol closed in 1965. This image shows the Ballarat Gaol c. 1861 giving us an understanding of what the site looked like before all the changes that have occurred over the years since the gaol closed and other organisations have had the site. There was an enormous crash and Crafty thought he had finally squashed the Dogtor but he was not harmed when the great stone fell, using his stethoscope to open the door. Crafty was hiding behind a shed in the yard waiting for the dust to settle. The Dogtor used his teeth to catch Crafty by the end of his tail but Crafty twisted and escaped through an opening in the back fence. David Gordon Collection. These are an interested relic from the 1880s when the Prince of Wales and Old Poverty Company converted their winding machinery from flat wire rope to round wire rope. The old rope of some hundreds of metres in length was simply dragged clear of the mine and discarded in the surrounding bushland. This style of rope succeeded the old Indian hemp flat rope, and was in turn superseded by the round wire rope. These segments are most instructive and quite rare relics. The smaller segment measures approximately 40 x 10cm. The longer segment measures approximately 96 by 10cm

Entrance gates to “The Sycamores” Driveway. A show place on Concongella from mid 1860's. "The Sychmores" where William Osmand lived. Osmand's "Sycamores" was in a secluded block of the eastern side of the creek along which was planted pine and cypress trees. He built a comfortable house and line the carriage way with Sycamores. Osmand was on the of the men who made money in the Stawell reefs mines. "The Sycamores" has been owned by the West family since c 1920. In the first six years, £1,200,000 worth of gold was obtained. Almost every claim returned a fortune.' Page three title: Other features on Victoria Hill. This hill reached by a short and excellent access road gives a magnificent view of Bendigo and Golden Square, and a very good view of another tourist attraction, Lansells 'Fortuna' now Survey Regiment's headquarters. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. This photograph shows the last 120 ton slab to be used to complete the sixteen dark Buchan marble Ionic columns in the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. Its inclusion in the Shrine of Remembrance War Memorial is noteworthy.A black / white photograph mounted on a soiled grey buff card. The spoon was given to Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 2/2 Pioneer BN by an American POW. He carried the spoon tied to the side of his loin cloth. Max worked on the Burma Railway and in the Coal Mines in Japan, Senryu 24 and Fukuoka camps. After the war he could not sit on a chair for a long time and would just squat on the floor with his back to the wall as he had done as a POW. Earl's letter to his mother, dated 3rd June 1917, tells of the ordeal of being trapped in a mine for forty three hours at Hill 60 on the Western Front. In his letter, Earl states his belief that it was only because of Sgt Alexander Hood that a rescue attempt was undertaken. Earl died of disease the following month (July 1917). Alexander Hood was killed in action on 31st October 1917. Earl's brother, Stewart Leigh Earl ( 2404 - 46th Battalion), served and survived. This book is a register of land holders with miners' rights. The correspondence is associated with applications for miners' rights on privately owned land and business sites. They include application fotrms and objections to registrations. The areas referred to are Combienbar, Goongerah, Club Terrace, Wombat Creek and Dundong. One of the privileges under the Mines Act, conferred by the holding of a miner's right until 1935 was that of residence on up to one acre on a gold-fields area. Those occupying a residence area were "deemed in law to be possessed ... of such ... parcels ... and the property therein".This is a useful research tool.A large, heavy book with a grey cloth cover and red spine. The end papers are marbled. The inside pages are ruled in grey with red ruled columns. Entries are hand-written. There are copies of correspondence inside. Details given are the registration number and date, the name of the person, the number of the miner's right and its date, a description of the allotment and any remarks or references to other volumes. Used before the invention of electronic calculators, mechanical adding machines were most often used for long calculations. This calculator was used in the Ballarat School of Mines Physics Department. Addition and subtraction were perfomed by turning the larger side mounted crank forward or backward. the smaller crank lever zeros the two registers. Two buttons are provided to set the machine either to clear the number entry with each revolution of the crank or to repeat the entry. The University of Ballarat was established by the University Act 1993 and came into existence on 1 January 1994. The Act was amended in1997 to provide for the merging of the University with The School of Mines and Industries Ballarat Limited and the Winnera Institute of TAFE, and the establishment of a Technical and Further Education Division in addition to a Higher Education Division. The new campus at Mount Helen was part of the Ballarat School of Mines, and was known as Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. The drawing was prepared in the early stages of the Mount Helen campus development, while Stage I buildings ('E', 'F', 'G') were constructed. the Union Building (now Albert Coates Centre), Library, 'S' Building and student accommodation were in the design stage. Kenneth Joynson Flecknoe joined the Ballarat School of Mines Council on 16 April 1975, and was elected Vice-President on 15 July 1979, and became its eleventh president in 1981. His time on Council was one of rapid chance for the School, from separation of the tertiary division and the Junior Technical School to the development of TAFE. !30 Victoria Street Ballarat was built for Joseph Phillips in 1888. It was originally named "Ellaville". It was a family home until it was sold to the Education Department in 1945/46 and became a hostel for young ladies, later becoming a residence for the Ballarat Teachers' College. When Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education and the Ballarat Teachers' College merged in 1976, the Victoria Street residence became availablefor use by the Ballarat School of Mines.
