The first Baptist church in Kew was wooden and erected in St John's Parade in 1854 and was enlarged in 1859. A brick church was later erected in Cotham Road in 1882 and was later named Newnham Hall after Reverend Newnham. In 1921 land was purchased in Highbury Grove at a cost of 602.00. Messer's E & F Ratten donated 6 feet of land beside this new purchase which allowed for a frontage 79 feet. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid on 14 October 1922 by Councillor F.R. Patten J.P. The opening services of the Glendearg Grove Methodist Church South Malvern were held on 5th February 1905. The church had seating for 400 people and was built at a cost of 1200 pounds. The first church services were held at the McHaffie home in Ventnor once a fornight, the Preacher coming over in a whaleboat from the mainland. Land was reserved for the Church in 1869 and the first services were held in the new church in 1870. The Parish Hall was built in 1935. This photograph was published in Church and Nation 12 December 1984. The photograph was taken at celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Parkdale Uniting (formerly Methodist) Church. The current brick veneer building incorporated an earlier weatherboard church built on the site. The old church was brick veneered and tiled in 1961. New kindergarten rooms were built at the rear in 1970. In October 1863 the Rev. James Bickford visited Sale to explore the possibilities of establishing a Methodist cause there. In March 1864 a group of 8 local men petitioned Conference to appoint a minister. The men were: Nehemiah Guthridge, G. Ross, J.H. Walters, J.E. Derrick, G.E. Hawkins, R. Gibbs, J.J. Drew, J. James. The Rev. Henry Baker arrived in the Gippsland Circuit later in 1864. The first Methodist services in Sale were held in the Mechanics Institute, but by July 1865 a Methodist church had been opened for worship. A Sunday School was constructed in 1886. The Sale Methodist Church was renovated at a cost of 2500 pounds in 1951. Two identifications of this building have been made: 1. The copy of the photograph in the LDHS collection was donated from the estate of Mag Gorman, and was identified as the Catholic Church at Berringa, which was moved after the gold mining days to Willowvale, where it burnt down in the bushfires of 1944. 2. The same photograph is on p. 249 of Joan Hunt's book "Springdallah", where it is identified as St Mark's Church of England, Happy Valley. The Baptist Church was built in 1881 in Tucker Road, in 1916 on land donated by Henry Box, a local market gardener. The wooden Church was moved to the to Vickery Street Bentleigh, the current site of the Bentleigh Baptist Church .
