He was one of the founding group of Legatees, being enrolled in 1924, and served for 54 years. The Bulletin often published articles on Legatees when they passed away. John Henry Brian Armstrong was born 23 June 1894 and completed a law degree at Melbourne University. He served with the militia when at University and tried to enlist in December 1915. He was accepted into the Army Medical Corps in April 1916. He served in France and Belgium as a Lieutenant with 22 Infantry Battalion and was wounded near Dernacourt on 24th April 1918. He was wounded again and taken prisoner at Herleville, France on 18 August 1918 when leading a night patrol in an action in which the majority of the party were killed. For a number of years Brian was a Trustee of the Frances Ormond Estate, which was the genesis of The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Along with Legatee Jim Gillespie (and Jim's grandfather) the trustees were identified with all the notable developments of RMIT. He remained a bachelor his whole life. He was one of the initial archivists of Melbourne Legacy. One of his speeches in 1961 gives an insight into why he became a Legatee. ... McKay Sunshine Harvester Works. He and his wife Frances held the first cottage meetings in their Devonshire Road home. ...McKay Sunshine Harvester Works. He and his wife Frances held the first cottage meetings in their Devonshire Road home. ...The Pentecostalism movement in Sunshine was established in 1916 by Charles Lewis Greenwood, a young 25 year old Sunshine resident and employee of the H.V. McKay Sunshine Harvester Works. He and his wife Frances held the first cottage meetings in their Devonshire Road home. For nine years these meetings continued to be held there, including people being baptised in their bath. The Sunshine Gospel Hall in Martin Street, Sunshine was the third Pentecostal meeting place to be established in Melbourne. Its construction was completed in February 1925. The small hall was described as a timber hall of weatherboard construction with a small brick room at the back. The hall was simply named as the Sunshine Gospel Hall. In 1925, Adolfo C. Valdez arrived from America, he joined the Sunshine group and became its leader that year. Shortly afterwards, the church's congregation outgrew the Sunshine Gospel Hall, and in 1926, the congregation moved to the Richmond Theatre on Bridge Road. This theatre was later to become known as the 'Richmond Temple'. The Martin Street Hall then became the 1st Sunshine Scout Hall. In 1994, the site was sold for private development, and a residential house was built on the site. In 1926, W. J. Nankervis, an enthusiastic Pentecostal poet wrote an unpublished song about the brick prayer room, but unfortunately only part of the words are known. 'There's a little brick room in Sunshine Hall, whose walls give forth no sound, you can shout as you will with never a fear of troubling the folks around'.These documents record the early established of the Pentecostalism movement in Sunshine. The documents also describes the character of Charles Lewis Greenwood as being 25 years old and married for one year. although small in stature, he was a lively, effervescent young man, with abundant energy and drive. When he preached, it was with obvious joy and with infectious enthusiasm. His simple, literal approach to the Word of God gave an authority to this message that caused people to respond. He spoke the language of the working man, and he made clear what he said.5720.01 - Australian Pentecostalism In Sunshine.jpg 5720.02 - Australian Pentecostalism In Sunshine.jpg 5720.03 - Australian Pentecostalism In Sunshine.jpg 5720.04 - Australian Pentecostalism In Sunshine.jpgpentecostal church, martin street, sunshine, sunshine gospel hall, devonshire road, charles lewis greenwood, adolfo c. valdez, w.j.nankervis -

The designation "Nippon porcelain" refers to porcelain made in Japan for export to the west, and stamped with the word Nippon on their bases. This practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren't "plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labelled in legible English words." Unfortunately, many reproduction or fake pieces were also produced. In 1921 "Nippon" was no longer accepted by U.S. Customs Agents as the correct name of origin so from then on, imported Japanese porcelain was supposed to be marked "Japan". This information helps us to establish provenance of this item as after 1921.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. Kew Historical Society IncPlan, Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1294 & 1295, 1904
... Of the four mansions shown in Studley Park Road, three remain – ‘Field Place’, the home of Frances Henty, ‘Leaghur’ and ‘Darley’. ‘Byram’ (later ‘Goathland’, then ‘Tara Hall’) was an architectural marvel. ...Of the four mansions shown in Studley Park Road, three remain – ‘Field Place’, the home of Frances Henty, ‘Leaghur’ and ‘Darley’. ‘Byram’ (later ‘Goathland’, then ‘Tara Hall’) was an architectural marvel. ...The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria). This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). The streets and built structures in MMBW Detail Plan 1294 & 1295 were surveyed in 1903 and released to contractors in 1904. This plan is one of two in the collection where the lithographers amalgamated two separate plans. Both plans include sections of Studley Park. Dominating the south and west corners of Kew Junction are the Clifton and Kew Hotels. The Kew Hotel, owned by Patrick O’Shaughnessy was one of the oldest in Kew. MMBW plans were amended over time to take account of new subdivisions such as that which created Merrion Place. Designed in 1888 by E.G. Kilburn for the paper magnate George Ramsden, it was demolished in 1960. While an earlier sale of the southern section of Byram had created Tara Avenue in 1927, the demolition of the house in 1960 enabled the extension of Tara Avenue northward.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1294, mmbw 1295, cartography -

Main Road and York Street, Eltham, early 1900s. Sign on side of building "Baker, Grocer & Summer Drinks" This image appears to be of the baker/grocery store after it was purchased in 1902 by Mrs Sarah Burgoyne and her husband, John James Thomas Burgoyne. It is possible that Mrs Sarah Burgoyne is the lady in front of the store with her eldest daughter, Charlotte and youngest son, James. Another daughter (Frances) and the family dog are watching from the doorway. In 1902 Mrs Sarah Burgoyne purchased from Wilfred Henry Johnston, the property on the southern corner of Main Road and York Street, Eltham, which consisted of a store and bakery establishment occupied by Mr. Luther Haley whose lease had expired around the same time. Mr. Haley had not been prepared to leave as he was unable to secure at Eltham a suitable house in which to carry on his business. Wilfred Johnston applied for an eviction of Hayley, which was heard at Eltham Courthouse in August 1902. Hayley advised he was building a place near the railway station which he expected to be done in about three weeks’ time. The court gave him the three weeks to vacate. Hayley’s new premises near the station became the present shopping district’s first shop and he ran it successfully till 1917 when the family moved to Clifton Hill, and he became a publisher. Their eldest child Leslie drowned in the Diamond Creek in early 1904, aged 12.Sepia photograph mounted on cardeltham, eltham bakery, grocer, john james thomas burgoyne, main road, sarah jane burgoyne (nee benson), summer drinks, york street -

In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. ...This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scots Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had four daughters – Frances (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Toby jugs date back to the mid-1760s in Staffordshire, England. The most common belief is that Toby Jugs were named for an 18th-century Yorkshire man who got the nickname Toby Fillpot after he drank 2,000 pints of Yorkshire stingo (ale). Original jugs usually showed a seated figure but over time they evolved to be character mugs, often featuring well known personalities. Simon Cellarer was the subject of a 19th century English folksong. The keys on the handle are those to his cellar, full of great wines and ales. He was always good for standing a drink for his friends. It was issued from 1936 to 1960.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is representative of a style of pottery items popular in the 1930s to 1970s in Australian households.A ceramic Toby Jug depicting the character "Simon the Cellarer". The character wears a maroon hat and white ruff. The handle is in the shape of the keys to the cellar door.Around bottom of ruff: "Simon Cellarer:toby jugs, pottery, character jugs
