Book - Airmen I have Met - Their Stories, Derrick Rolland, 1999
This book includes biographies of 16 different airmen with whom the compiler has come in contact. They have had their own uniques experiences in aviation. 12 of them served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). One of the aviators featured in this publication is Joe Drage, Born on 10 July 1931 in Walwa, Joseph Gordon (Joe) Drage operated a timber mill and earthmoving business, but his great passion was aviation. After obtaining his pilot’s licence at the age of 19, Mr. Drage set about buying vintage aircraft that he feared would be sold overseas. He bought his first aircraft, a Tiger Moth in 1965. In 1972 he established Drage Historical Aircraft Museum on about 60 ha of land in Wodonga, with 5 planes. Over time this grew to 21 planes which Joe maintained so that they were all in flying order. His museum was the location for several air shows which included fly-ins by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association. The land occupied by the Museum was compulsorily acquired by the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation and Wangaratta council bought the aircraft collection for about $2 million. They opened Drage Airworld in 1984. The cost of maintaining the collection became too much for the council which closed it down in 2002. Joe Drage died on 9 August 2017.This publication has a hard cover with a dust jacket. It consists of 191 pages, including 85 black and white and 12 coloured images. This book includes biographies of 16 different airmen with whom the compiler has come in contact. Book - Leichhardt the Dauntless Explorer, Colin Roderick, 1988
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. This is the first substantial account of his life and work, based on his diaries, logs and field books. Leichhardt's accomplishments have been uncarefully handled by many researchers and much hearsay and supposition has marred the record of the explorer's life. Not assisting in these efforts is the fact that his journals and logbooks were all written in the Gothic form of the German language and have been largely indecipherable and, in places, open to misinterpretation. With the publication of this volume, the story has been set straight. Using unprecedented access to Leichhardt's writings, including his personal correspondence, the author throws new light upon the scandals and defamations which historians - many with vested interests - have heaped upon him. It also includes Leichhardt’s observations of Aboriginal culture round Durundur Station; references to meetings with groups by 1844-1845 expedition to Port Essington; predominantly friendly relations with tribes; instruction in bush foods and medicines; Koko-Pera attack; appendix includes table of Tribal areas traversed 1844-5.non-fictionLudwig Leichhardt (1813 -1848) is known as one of the most individualistic of Australian explorers. Book - Extract, Breaking the road for the rest, 1979
A photocopy of 7 pages of Chapter 13 from Legatee Donovan Joynt's biography 'Breaking the road for the rest'. Legatee Donovan had received a VC in World War 1. Chapter 13 deals with Legatee Joynt's involvement with Legacy. It covers some of the early years of Legacy's history as he was present at the first luncheon. He mentions it was Mr PW Powell (Pip) that proposed the name Legacy - other accounts attribute the idea to Frank Selleck. It seems Legatee Powell suggested the idea but it was Legatee Selleck that proposed the formal motion and was documented in the minutes. Joynt mentions: "The speaker emphasised that the name Legacy was chosen because it the members of the new organisation had accepted as a legacy the responsibility of seeing that the ideals which their comrades had died fighting for were maintained in Australia." On page 163 to 164 he relates the efforts Legacy had gone to for the Shrine of Remembrance to be built. An account of the early days of Legacy in a biography of a well known Legatee.Black and white A4 photocopy x 5 pages of pages from Legatee Joynt's biographybiography, donovan joynt -

Ringwood and District Historical Society
Book, Elizabeth Dole Porteus, Let's Go Exploring: The Life Of Stanley D. Porteus - Hawaii's Pioneer Psychologist, 1991
White hard covered book. Biography by daughter-in-law of Stanley Porteus, pioneer of modern psychology and one-time resident of Ringwood, Victoria. SUMMARY NOTES. Stanley David Porteus was born in Box Hill, Victoria, Australia in 1883, the only son of a Methodist minister. Like other now large suburbs of Melbourne such as Canterbury, Mitcham and Ringwood, Box Hill was a mere village. Each was surrounded by bush. He grew up like most Australian boys with a love of sport and, although lightly built, did quite well at Australian Rules football and was above average at cricket. He became a schoolteacher with the Victorian Education Department. Promotion within the department depended on experience gained at teaching in tiny rural schools so he applied for such a position at Glenaladale, on the Dargo Road, some 35 miles north west of Bairnsdale. He walked about 6 miles from the nearest railway station at Fernbank to find the school surrounded by virgin forest with only one dwelling in sight. Attached to the school were lean-to rooms that were to be his residence for the next 2 ½ years. He was fascinated by the nearby Den of Nargun and Bull Creek, which joined the Mitchell River in a deep gorge containing a profusion of rainforest vegetation. While at Glenaladale, he met Frances Evans who became his wife. To seek promotion, he left Glenaladale and taught at Leneva and Benambra. While at the latter school, he learned of a position becoming available as superintendent of special schools in Melbourne. As the available means of transport, coach and horses to Bairnsdale, then by train to Melbourne, would not get him to Melbourne before the close of applications, he borrowed a bicycle and rode through the bush to his in-laws home at Lindenow and thus made it before the deadline. He was successful in his application and it set him on a course that lead to him becoming Australia's first Clinical Psychologist. His work, particularly, the development of the Porteus Maze Test, attracted the attention of American educators and he was offered an appointment for a year at Vineland Training School in New Jersey. On a stopover in Honolulu, he was impressed to the extent that he expressed a desire to work there. Not the least of its attractions was the mix of races that offered opportunities to study psychological differences, if any, between various races. His wish was to be granted unexpectedly as he was, in 1919, invited to Honolulu to set up a Psychological and Psychopathic Clinic at the University of Hawaii. From his home in the hills north of Honolulu, on December 7th 1941, he saw the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. He lived there until his death in about 1980. -
