The Wesleyan Methodist Church at Clunes is a distinctive bluestone building in the Gothic style and was designed by the Ballarat architect J.A. Doane. Construction began in 1864 and the church was further extended in 1871. The building consists of a broad nave and transepts with galleries, these having cast iron balustrades. The facade incorporates a slate-roofed octagonal turret and spire and a four-light perpendicular Gothic window. The interior includes windows with quarry glass panes and coloured borders; those on either side of the organ incorporate scrolled texts and may be by the Melbourne makers Ferguson & Urie. With declining congregations, the property was purchased by Wesley College in 1999 and now forms part of its Clunes campus. The church building has received a very extensive restoration, including structural strengthening, the opening out of the interior to its original dimensions and the installation of a new floor. The Anglican church established a tent church on Agitation Hill in 1852. In January 1855 the foundation stone for All Saints was laid on the corner of Forest and MacKenzie Streets. The church opened for worship in June 1856. It was initially named the Anglican Cathedral (seat of the Bishop). The booklet was issued for the opening and dedication of the new Methodist Church in Greensborough on 5th February 1966.The booklet also outlines the history of Methodism in the Colony of Victoria and in Greensborough. In 1887, land on the south east corner of Whitehorse Road and Richards Street, Mitcham was purchased and in 1888 a weatherboard church was erected. This early church was used until 1921, when the building was moved to a site in Mitcham Road, just north of Whitehorse Road. St John's Presbyterian was built in 1853. It was used for worship services 1853 - 1927. It was subsequently used by church organisations for a further 25 years. Demolished in 1953. This set of seventeen church pews was originally used in St. Nicholas Seamen’s Church, 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria, during religious services there. The Church was operated by the Mission to Seamen organisation. The pews were donated to the St Nicholas Seamen’s Church by the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, founded by Ethel Margaret Musther, M.B.E.. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centr4es in over 200 ports world-wide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981 and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. The set of pews is significant historically for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The set of pews id historically significant for their connection to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, an organisation of women, formed to support seafarers. The connection of these pews to the Mission to Seamen and to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. The first service of the Surrey Hills Presbyterian Church was held at ‘Kinnoul’, the home of Thomas Hogg, located in The Avenue. This was while the church was being built. St Stephens Presbyterian Church opened in March 1899 on land that had previously been part of Klepper's orchard. The first minister was Rev F A Darling. He resigned in 1892 to open Surrey College. The church building pictured was built in 1910 adjacent on land gifted to the church. Noted features of the interior are the pulpit and honor board carved by sculptor John Kendrick Blogg. St Martin's Anglican Church was built in 1889. Victoria Hall was built for E. Miles in 1884. St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1875 with the Minister in 1895 being the Rev. W. Gray Dixon. At this time the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour was active and there was great enthusiasm for supporting missionary work in China and India. This newsletter is of considerable importance as it is an original document and describes the activities of the Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in the 1890s and gives us some idea of the character of the church at the time. It includes information on Fred Newcombe who later died in India while working as a medical missionary and the names of many people who made their mark in our history. This is a white four-page printed newsletter - St. John’s Quarterly Record, No. 21, Warrnambool, April, 1895. The front page contains an image of St. John’s Church. The printed material includes Church Notes, Marriages, Funerals, Church Register and Disjunctions from Membership. The Bulla Presbyterian Church and Manse were designed by Thomas Taylor. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s awarded as part of the Warrnambool inter-church indoor sports competitions. One of the sponsors of this competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer. He had his head office and main factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was awarded for rope quoits. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops on to a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. The trophy was won by the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.). A Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in 1864 and was transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This church was sold to the Salvation Army in 1979 when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the Uniting Church. This cup is of interest as it is a 1930s trophy awarded by the now-defunct Inter Church Indoor Sports Association of Warrnambool. This is an electro plated nickel silver cup with two ornate side handles and a stem in a bulbous shape attached to a silver base.
