Dated on cover 1923. Agreement dated 23/11/1923, to 31/3/1925. Applies to both Ballarat and Bendigo. Details hours of work, rates, Sunday runs, casual rates, holidays, free passes, uniforms, training students, meal relief, one-man cars, eyesight tests, dismissals, meals, Board of Reference. Gives schedules for various grades, and a schedule for quarterly adjustment of wages depending on a cost of living index. On rear page - page 16, has the name of "Fremantle Municipal Tramways and Electric Lighting Board" as the name of the respondent - printing error, or heard at the same time. Geological specimen - Cerussite, Unknown c.1890s
Named in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger cerussite takes its name from the Latin cerussa, meaning 'white lead'. When viewed under certain lighting conditions cerussite gives of fire and rainbow-like colours (due to its high dispersion) and it is quite sought after by geological collectors for this very reason. Cerussite is usually found in the oxidised zone of lead ore deposits. It is a very common weathering product of galena and other lead ore minerals. It is a secondary mineral, meaning it forms as a result of the alteration of pre-existing minerals in the Earth’s crust. The presence of lead in cerussite makes it potentially toxic. Historically, it has been an important source of lead, which has numerous industrial applications, including in batteries, construction materials, and radiation shielding. Cerussite has a crystal structure that belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. Its crystal structure is characterized by a three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a repeating pattern. The crystal lattice of cerussite consists of interconnected lead (Pb) and carbonate (CO3) ions. This crystal structure is visible in the specimen. This specimen was found in Dundas (formerly Mount Dundas), a historical mining locality, mineral field and railway located on the western foothills of the West Coast Range in Western Tasmania. During the 1890s Dundas swelled in numbers however it is now lost in a temperate rainforest and its population is now 2. The present Dundas Extended mine, about 1.5 km east of Dundas is presently worked for specimen material.Faceted cerussite gems are considered rare and valuable, given the softness of the mineral. This item is not a faceted gem however its historical and scientific research potential give it significance; mined in an Australian township, this cerussite could shed light on the now lost history of Dundas and the mining that occurred there. Additionally, the uses of this mineral in historical industrial processes give it scientific significance. Such knowledge can add to understandings of the geographical and geological nature of Western Tasmania and allow for further study of Australian geological specimens. A cigarette lighter is a portable device used to generate a flame. It consists of a metal or plastic container filled with a flammable fluid or pressurized liquid gas, a means of ignition, and some provision for extinguishing the flame. A spark is created by striking metal against a flint, or by pressing a button that compresses a piezoelectric crystal (piezo ignition), generating an electric arc. In naphtha lighters, the liquid is sufficiently volatile, and flammable vapour is present as soon as the top of the lighter is opened. Butane lighters combine the striking action with the opening of the valve to release gas. The spark ignites the flammable gas causing a flame to come out of the lighter which continues until the top is closed (naphtha type), The Beney Company was founded by Robert Ernest Beney of London, England. R. E. Beney invented and marketed the first Beney mechanical lighter in 1919. Beney also designed and manufactured numerous luxury lighters and striker boxes for Alfred Dunhill of London as well as Hermes of Paris. In 1938, Beckenham based Beney Lighters was acquired, adding utility lighters and precision tools to the company's (Winn & Coates) ever growing list of products. The biggest selling line manufactured by Beney was the Economic Gas Lighter which hung on the side of housewife's gas cookers and was also used for lighting Bunsen burners in laboratories. In 1939-1940 the company moved its administration to the Beney Lighter premises in Beckenham after the Head Office at Trinity Square along with many company records were destroyed in a 'doodlebug' flying bomb attack. Beney Ltd. continued producing lighters at least through the late 1954. PYREX is a brand that was introduced by Amory Houghton Sr. (1812-1882) founder of Corning Incorporated in 1915 for a line of clear, low-thermal-expansion borosilicate glass used for laboratory glassware and kitchenware. In 1879 Corning Incorporated developed a bulb-shaped glass encasement for Thomas Edison’s new incandescent lamp. Borosilicate glass was first made by German chemist and glass technologist Otto Schott, founder of Schott AG , Jena , Germany in 1893, 22 years before Corning Inc. produced the PYREX brand. Schott AG sold the product under the name "Duran.".. In 1908, Dr. Eugene Sullivan (1872 - 1962), Director of Research at Corning Glass Works, U.S.A., who had studied in Leipzig, Germany, developed Nonex, a borosilicate low-expansion glass. 1913 Jesse Littleton of Corning Inc. discovered the cooking potential of borosilicate glass by giving his wife a casserole dish made from a cut-down Nonex battery jar. Corning Inc. removed the lead from Nonex, and developed it as a consumer product and Pyrex made its public debut in 1915 during World War I, positioned as an American-produced alternative to the German ‘Duran’. 1952 ‘Corning ware’ ceramic glass was developed by Dr. S.D.Stookey. 1994 Corning received an Award for life- changing, life- enhancing technological inventions that enabled new industries, - lighting, television, optical communications. The PYREX line of highly durable cookware and laboratory glass products are still available today. 'Into The Woods' was a production performed by the University of Ballarat Arts Academy in 2006. It was performed at the Helen McPherson Smith Theatre, Camp Street, Ballarat from Wednesday 28th March to Friday 1st April at 8pm; a matinee on Saturday 1st at 2pm and Sunday 2nd at 5pm. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. 'The Antipodes' a comedy by Richard Brome. He was an English dramatist, born c1590 and died September24 1652 in London, generally deemed the "most considerable of minor Jacobean playwrights". 'The Antipodes' was an "ingenious satirical comedy" considered Brome's masterpiece - folly, jealousy, melancholy, madness and discord. This play directed by Kim Durban is a play within a play travels with Peregrine to Botany Bay in 1789 where there is an imagined "upside-down paradise of masterless men." The main ingredient is Ballarat's magnificent Mining Exchange, haunted as it is by ghosts of earlier travellers. The Ruyton Reporter (formerly known as Ruyton Reports) captures the essential Ruyton Girls' School experience for the broader school community. It has been produced since 1986.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Thus, the record can be used as a reference example for research into Victorian school history. It also gives insight into the types of activities and events undertaken at Ruyton Girls' School during the period of its production. Duncan McDougall was associated with the pioneering X-rays conducted by the Ballarat School of Mines in 1896. He was in the Mendelssohn Choir, and was associated with Professor Ross from University of Western Australia. The Ballarat Courier reported on 20 July 1896:"The Ballarat Courier reported on 20 July 1896 Thanks to the energy of the staff of the School of Mines Ballarat and particularly to Messers F J Martell and Duncan McDougall the assistance of Roentgen xrays will soon be available, for the relief of suffering at this institution. On Wednesday evening 22 July 1896 a number of ladies and gentlemen witnessed a series of experiments with the Roentgen x rays." Duncan McDougall later worked at the Kalgoorlie School of Mines as a lecturer in physics and mathematics. on 19 February 1905 the 'West australian' newspaper announced: " Mr Duncan McDougall, formerly of the Ballarat, and later of the Maryborough Schools of Mines, was appointed to succeed Mr. Hart. Mr. McDougall had also charge of the branch class at Midland Junction. In both cases his work proved thoroughly good. The alterations in the trades class regulations will cause all the students in these classes to take up the study of this subject. I have every confidence that Mr. McDou gall will handle these large classes as successfully as the classes he had last year." By 1925 McDougall is being reported in the Perth Daily News: "Duncan McDougall, lecturer on electrical engineering and physics at the W.A. School of Mines, put forward a scheme for reducing the cost of mining in Kalgoorlie. He contended it was the duty of the State and Federal Governments to establish a central electricity generation plant in Kalgoorlie and supply power to the mines at not more than 1/2d a unit, at 3/4d per unit for winding only, and at 2d per unit for lighting. Ceremonial object - Mayoral chain, Blashki, City of Sandringham Mayoral Chain, c. 1954
This chain was part of the official regalia worn by the Mayor of the City of Sandringham before the amalgamation into Bayside City Council in 1994. The chain was seen as an outward sign of power, authority, and responsibility and was a formal, full-dress type of regalia that was worn by the mayor over their robes at ceremonial functions. The large central drop medallion features the design of the council sea, and the links of the chains are made of cutwork initials of each Mayor. The Sandringham seal was designed by Sans and McDougal had been selected in 1917, by a special committee and its main features are the Sandringham pier and breakwater, with a yacht in full sail as an inset, supported by two dolphins. The motto reads 'Omni Opere' which translates to ‘With all earnestness.’9 carat yellow gold mayoral chain for the City of Sandringham. Consists of two concentric circles of 57 small oval links, with an Australian Coat of Arms as a centrepiece and a large 'drop' medallion of the City of Sandringham seal below. Each oval link is made up of the cutwork initials of a mayor, the surrounding oval border has an inscription above the initials which gives the mayor's name; an inscription below gives dates of office; the earliest is Cr. B.J. Ferdinando 1917-18, and latest is Cr. S.T. Russell 1993-94. The ovals are surrounded by decorative scrolls and are joined by small curb chains. The outer circle contains 31 links, while the inner contains 26. On both shoulders sit decorative bars, joining the front of the chain to the back. The main medallion has an oval central panel that features the coloured Sandringham seal in enamel depicting two sailboats in the water, a pier protruding from the left, a coastline on the right with two pine trees. Above the scene are decorative triangles in light blue and yellow, above which is another section in dark blue containing a third sailboat. The seal is flanked by two engraved dolphins and above it sits an engraved St Edward's gold crown filled with red enamel. Below the seal, there is a ribbon containing the Latin motto 'OMNI OPERE' which is engraved and filled in dark blue enamel. The pendant is surrounded by cutwork lettering reading 'CITY OF SANDRINGHAM / 1919' and leaf decorations. The medallion is inscribed on the reverse with important dates in Sandringham's history. A fleur-de-lys joins the medallion to the Australian Coat of Arms centrepiece above. The Coat of Arms features a shield, depicting symbols of Australia's six states, in enamel, flanked by an engraved kangaroo on the left and emu on the right. Accessory - Gold Cross, Bef. 01-06-1878
The gold cross was discovered by Victorian scuba diver Julie Wilkins, who had already experienced more than 500 dives in Australia and overseas. She was holidaying in Peterborough, Victoria, and looking forward to discovering more about the famous Loch Ard ship, wrecked in June 1878 at Mutton Bird Island. The fast Glasgow-built clipper ship was only five years old when the tragedy occurred. There were 54 people on board the vessel and only two survived Julie's holiday photograph of Boat Bay reminds her of her most memorable dive. Submerged in the calm, flat sea, she was carefully scanning around the remains of the old wreck when, to her amazement, a gold coin and a small gold cross suddenly came up towards her. She excitedly cupped them in her hands, then stowed the treasures safely in her wetsuit and continued her dive. She soon discovered a group of brass carriage clock parts and some bottles of champagne. It was a day full of surprises. The items were easily recognisable, without any build-up of encrustations or concretion. Julie secretly enjoyed her treasures for twenty-four years then packed them up for the early morning train trip to Warrnambool. After a short walk to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, her photograph was taken as she handed over her precious find. She told her story to a local newspaper reporter, lunched a café in town then took the late afternoon train home. Her generous donation is now part of a vast collection of Loch Ard shipwreck artefacts, including the gold watch and the Minton Majolica model peacock. The small decorative cross dates back to on or before 1878, when the Loch Ard had set sail. The loop and ring have been added, perhaps as a pendant, pocket watch accessory or similar purpose. It may have been worn for ‘good luck’ or a ‘blessing’ on the long journey to Australia, where ships had to carefully navigate the treacherous Bass’s Strait before arriving at their destination of Melbourne. Sadly, many met their fate on that short stretch of ocean aptly named the Shipwreck Coast. The cross is very recognisable even though it was exposed to the wrecking of the ship, its consequent movement, and the sea's turbulence. Its scratched, pitted and worn condition, and the damage near the loop, is part of its story. The red-brown-black discolouration is similar to that found on other gold coins, sometimes called the ‘corrosion phenomena’. Studies suggest the possible cause is contaminants in the minting process reacting to the coins’ environment. Three edges of the cross have slightly raised narrow ridges of gold which could have been cause by the gold being cast liquid gold into a mould.This gold cross pendant is significant as a symbol of Christianity, a sign of hope and safety, and a sample of the religious following on board the Loch Ard, although not everyone wears a cross for this reason. This cross is a sample of jewellery owned by people migrating to Australia in the late 19th century. The cross and the guinea recovered together from the wreck of the Loch Ard are made of gold and help interpret the financial status of some of those on board.Gold cross; yellow gold with decorative hand engraved foliage design on the front, fitted loop and ring on top. The simple Latin or Roman variation of the cross, with an elongated vertical arm, has no figure on it and the reverse has no decoration. Domestic object - Match Safe, after 1830's
This match safe was amongst various items collected from a sea dive in Port Phillip Bay. The diver was the caretaker of the Port Lonsdale Lighthouse, who dived on various wrecks in the bay during the 1960's. After the caretaker's death, his son sold off many of the shipwreck artefacts. The match safe was purchased from the caretaker's son in the 1990's by a previous owner of the Marine Shop, Queenscliff, Victoria. Pocket match safes or match safes were small portable boxes, or containers made in a great variety of forms and shapes, each with lids or covers to contain matches and retain their quality. Matches came into use around the 1830's and were produced extensively between the years 1890 and 1920. During this period everyone carried strike anywhere matches, so they could ignite stoves, lanterns and other devices. Early matches were unreliable and prone to ignite from rubbing on one another or spontaneously. Accordingly, most people carried a match safe to house their matches. Wealthy people had ‘match safes made of gold or silver, while common folk had ones made of tin or brass. They were made throughout the world including the United Kingdom, in the U.S.A., continental Europe and Australia. Significant English makers of cases were, Sampson Mordan and Asprey & Co. Significant American manufacturers of match safes include Wm. B. Kerr, Gorham, Unger Brothers, Battin, Blackington , Whiting, George Scheibler and Shreve & Co. Different patterns and types run into thousands as well as plain and decorative examples. They were also made in a wide range of materials, including pressed brass, pressed tin, gunmetal, nickel silver, gold, bone, ivory, the wood of varying types, early plastics like tortoiseshell and Bakelite, and ceramics. A distinguishing characteristic of match safes is that they have a ribbed surface, usually on the bottom, for lighting the matches. The item gives a snapshot into the social development through it's application in every day use match safes were used at a time when there were no safety matches and the early use of matches was a dangerous affair given they were easily combustive if rubbed together in a pocket for example. Article - Grand Union Tramway Junction, Balaclava Road and Hawthorn Road
This file contains three items. 1. A three-page Caulfield Conservation Study of the Balaclava Road/Hawthorn Road Tramway Crossing, undertake by Andrew Ward and dated September 1994. Study includes a brief history of the junction and a statement of significance. Study also includes Four black and white photographs of the junction and of architectural details of the tram tracks. 2. A letter from the Conservation Manager of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to the manager of the Planning Section for the City of Glen Eira, dated 15/06/2001 and attached to a six-page Classification Report. The letter informs of the Classification of the Grand Union Junction at the intersection of Balaclava and Hawthorn Road by the national trust, signed by Conservation Manager Ian Pausacker. Classification Report includes details such as the date of construction, a statement of significance, history of the junction, physical description of the junction and the condition of the junction at the time of writing. Report also includes a map of the Melbourne Tram Network drafted by Keith Kings and dated 01/005/1956, with illustration of the layout of fifteen tram depots, and updated aerial illustration of the Grand Union Junction, and a further map of Melbourne Tramways developed by North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Co. and Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, drafted by Keith Kings and dated January 1914 with illustrations of three tram depots. 3. Two articles from the Caulfield Leader written by Aaron Langmaid and dated 13/02/2007 and the Melbourne Bayside Weekly dated 21/02/2007 written by Joanne Sim, both concerning the Grand Union Junction. The article from the Caulfield Leader includes a picture of Executive Officer of the council of Tramway Museum of Australia Craig Tooke in front of the intersection. The article from the Bayside Weekly includes a picture of a tram passing through the junction and a brief history of the junction and tram network in Caulfield. Ruth was designed and carved by Charles Francis Summers, one of five white marble statues housed in the Statuary Pavilion, Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The Pavilion and its statues were unveiled in 1888 by Premier Duncan Gillies, a former colleague of James Russell Thompson whose bequest to the City enabled the purchase, in Italy, of the statues. The Flight from Pompeii and the four accompanying statues are housed in the Statuary Pavilion in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The Flight from Pompeii, in the centre, was designed by Professor Carlo Benzoni and carved by Charles Francis Summers while the four accompanying statues were all designed and carved by Charles Francis Summers. The octagonal Pavilion was specially designed by T.E. Molloy in 1887 to house the statuary. The five statues and Pavilion are believed to be unique in Australia. The Flight from Pompeii, Modesty, Rebekah, Ruth and Susannah are aesthetically significant as they are a group of statues, which are a fine example of the design of Professor G.M. Benzoni [Flight from Pompeii] and the design and carving of Charles Francis Summers. The carving of the Flight from Pompeii is both sensitive and finely done and both the design and carving of Modesty, Rebekah, Ruth and Susannah is sensitive and delicate with great attention to detail. The group is historically important as it epitomises the 'beautification' of the city in the 1880s by men who made their money from gold and who wished to give to the city money for projects such the statuary Pavilion and its contents. The Flight from Pompeii group is located in the Botanical Gardens, which were then also being developed in the Victorian style. This also illustrates the social feeling of the time in which the wealthy had made their money and were wanting to develop in a most substantial way, as well as to 'beautify' the city in which they lived. The Pavilion, designed by the major Ballarat architect T.E. Molloy, is unusual for its top-lit central lantern and curved roofs. The statues are seen to their best advantage because of the provision of all-round and top natural lighting.
