Booklet, The story of the red cross, 1940s
This book published by the Australian Red Cross Society has been written by Joan and Daryl Lindsay. The book features the work of many Australian artists in the 1940s. The inscription shows that the book was a prize awarded to Joyce Goodall, a pupil at Warrnambool Technical School. This school commenced in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool, a site now occupied by T.A.F.E. Warrnambool Technical School moved to a Caramut Road site and is now called Brauer College. The book was the James Swan Memorial Prize. Swan had a furniture business in Warrnambool. He was a City Councillor (1922-1936) and Mayor (1926-1928) and Swan Reserve in Raglan Parade is named after him. The donor of the prize, Mrs R. Pattison, was the daughter of James Swan and the wife of Ralph Pattison, Warrnambool Librarian. The winner of the prize, Joyce Goodall (Mrs Joyce Milne) was a member of the Goodall families which have been in the Warrnambool and Mortlake areas since the 1860s. John King was the first Head Teacher of Warrnambool Technical School and remained in that position for 29 years. This book is of interest as all of the names mentioned in the inscription plate in this book have a place in Warrnambool’s history. This is a hard cover book with the pages unnumbered. The cover is yellow with black lettering and the front cover has an emblem of the Red Cross and a laurel wreath in red and black. The cover is partly torn and has been mended with adhesive tape. The contents of the book are largely pictorial and illustrative with some text. The inscription is typed. ‘Warrnambool Technical School, Labor to Efficiency, 9th Dec. 1942, for Proficiency in English, James Swan Memorial Prize, donated by Mrs R. Book, Puffing Billy Preservation Society, G42: Puffing Billy's Big Brother, 1981
Victoria's narrow gauge railways were from Wangaratta to Whitfield (covering 30.5 miles/49 km) opening in 1899, Colac to Beech Forest (29 miles/46.7 km) opening in 1902 with an addition to Crowes (14.1 miles/22.7 km) opening in 1910, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook (18.2 miles/29.3 km) opening in 1900, and Moe to Walhalla (26 miles/41.3 km) opening in 1910. From the outset these narrow gauge lines proved very uneconomical in operation and were plagued with continuing financial losses. The lines most difficult to work were those carrying the most business, and in particular the trains from Colac and Moe with their 1 in 30 grades and countless curves precluded having engines with large coupled driving wheels operating. Having examined the possible use of articulated locomotives to reduce operating costs on the narrow gauge lines the Victorian Railways decided upon the Beyer-Garratt type of locomotive in 1925 and an order was placed in England for two engines of the 2-6-0 plus 0-6-2 wheel arrangements. These arrived in April 1926. Assembly of the new Garratts was duly completed and steaming trials carried out at Newport, Victoria, the engines being classed as "G" and given the running numbers "41" and "42". G41 was taken to Colac where, on 5 June 1926, it was put to work on the Colac-Beech Forest-Crowes line. G42 soon followed and duly began work on the equally steep and tortuous but shorter Moe-Walhalla line. Following the closure of the Moe line in 1955 G42 was refurbished and went to Colac. G41 was overhauled, but not as thoroughly as G42, at then returned to Colac where both Garratts shared regular work on the line until its closure in 1962. From 1978 G42 continues its operation on the Upper Ferntree Gully-Gembrook line as part of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society.G42: Puffing Billy's Big Brother. Book - Cattlemen & Huts of the High Plains, Harry Stephenson, 1980
This book records the development of Victoria's alpine regions by the pioneer cattlemen. They came from the Monaro in the 1830s to reach the Plains of Omeo while others advanced up the Murray tributaries to discover the Bogong High Plains in the 1830s and the Gippslanders moved their herds to Alpine pastures in the 1860s. The cattlemen, the snow plain pastures, the mountain scene and the bush huts are described and illustrated in this volume. It records an era in Australia whose story is becoming lost. This volume of 350 pages includes 34 maps, 326 illustrations and diagrams. It has a brown cloth with white lettering and a pictorial jacket featuring cattlemen on the High Plains. It includes an index and bibliography. The front page has an inscription which indicates it had been given to Ore Frueauf of Falls Creek.non-fictionThis book records the development of Victoria's alpine regions by the pioneer cattlemen. Work on paper - Bookplate, John Shirlow, "Ex Libris R.H. Croll Solvitur Ambulando" by John Shirlow
John Shirlow (1869-1936) John Shirlow was the first Australian to make etching the basis of his career. Schooled in Melbourne, he studied for a time with Artur Loureiro and attended design classes at the National Gallery School from 1890 to 1895. Specialising in renderings of old Melbourne buildings, which are now of great historical interest, he drew directly onto the plate in reverse. In 1929 he founded etching classes at the Working Men's Institute. Throughout his life a prominent figure on the Victorian art scene, he was involved in various choirs and bushwalked with R.H. Croll and C.J. Dennis. He was a Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1922 to 1936. (http://www.portrait.gov.au/people/john-shirlow-1869)Bookplate "Ex Libris R.H. The graphic pen-pictures of the war correspondents we have learned much of the conditions under which our soldiers lived and fought, but no matter how vivid the presentation, words alone cannot fully convey to the civilian an accurate impression of the battle area. Many of these photographs were taken under heavy fire showing the actual scenery amid which some of the most thrilling acts in the great drama of WWI were displayed. A pictorial record of places and events of our heroic soldiers who served in WWI. Each photograph of the sectors on which they fought will stimulate old memories - some sad, some pleasant, but all unspeakably dear. Australian War Photographs - Printed 1919.
