There is also a reproduction of this image in a framed collage of Surrey Hills photos.This is the earliest known image of the Surrey Gardens. The layout was originally designed by William Guilfoyle, who also designed Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.Black and white photo taken from an early postcard. Taken from the roof of a house in Essex Road, it shows the development of housing between Essex and Union Roads and includes the section of land fenced off for the Surrey Gardens with paths roughly laid out, one existing tree but no tree planting. The houses depicted are largely Edwardian timber buildings with corrugated rooves. There are still some vacant blocks. The girls are not uniformly dressed but each holds a large ribbon. Part of the bandstand can be seen to the left of the photo. The Canterbury Library is the large building in the near background; further in the distance are some of the double-storey shops along Canterbury Road. The original building situated to the right and rear of this complex was moved from Upper Halls Gap C1896. It was bought by James Balmain as a private residence having previously been a school. Additions were made to 'Bellfield' over the next 10-12 years and it became a guest house in 1910 when purchased by Mrs Matilda Thompson. It is likely that she is one of the ladies in the photograph. The message written on the one post card is: "wishing you the best of luck. and a speedy return to Halls Gap and good health from The Bakeryites. Taken in Beechworth c1910, this postcard depicts Victoria Road lined with trees and residential houses. A horse and buggy is also pictured driving towards the camera. This postcard was manufacture by SEMCO or SEMCO Art Needlework Company, which was a "music, post-card and fine art importers, indentors and publishers" established by Stanley Edward Mullen in c1910, Melbourne.
