This is a set of 1photographs of surveyors in the field measuring distances using chains, taking observations using theodolites and operating electric distance measurement equipment. They were probably employed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations or the surveyors may have been in training. The photos were most likely taken in the 1950s and 1960s. Photos .1P to .6P feature personnel setting up geodetic survey chaining equipment to measure distances. The surveyor in Photo .5P is LTCOL Howard Angus Johnson MBE who served from 1936 to 1954. The RA Svy surveyor in photos .7P to .12P were using a theodolite to take angular measurements. They were usually supported by an observer who recording their readings on a booking form. The surveyor in Photo .10P and .11P is LTCOL Jorge Gruszka, who served from 1955 to 1985. He was CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1982 to 1985. The surveyor in photo .13P is cutting an identification blaze on a tree using a hammer and chisel. The tellurometer in Photos .14P to .16P was a MRA1 microwave Electronic Distance Measuring instrument (EDM) introduced in 1958. It and later models were man-portable systems that improved geodetic survey efficiencies for rapid network extension and densification replacing triangulation with EDM and theodolite traverse sometimes using Bilby Towers to extend line lengths. The surveyor with the slouch hat is Colonel James ‘Jim’ Leslie Stedman, who served from 1941 to 1978. He was Director of Military Survey from 1975 to 1978 and was appointed as Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment, Retd) of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1978 to 1983. Information from "The AIF Project" Lieutenant Reginald Frank Barratt was born in 1879 in Withington, Manchester, Lancashire, England. Regimental number 2166. 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, Military District 3 and Military District 6. Arrived in Australia in 1903 aged 24. Address was Mount Street, Heidelberg, Victoria. Occupation - Farmer. Enlistment date was 17th August 1914. Served with the 68 Battery Royal Field Artillery during the South African War. Rank on enlistment was Sergeant. Embarkation details - Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board Transport A2 Geelong on 19th September 1914. Rank Lieutenant - Unit 1st Divisional Ammunition Column. Information from the Roll of Honour - Awarded Royal Human Society Medal for saving three lives from drowning in Orange River during South African War. Wounded at Zillebeke, near Ypres, Belgium. The reverse, designed by William McMillan, shows St George, naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, an allegory of the physical & mental strength which achieved victory of Prussianism. The horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross bones. In the background are ocean waves and just off centre near the right upper time is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914-1918 appear on the perimeter in the left and right fields respectively. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wide with 3mm wide royal blue band, 2mm wide black band, 3mm wide white band repeated in reverse order and separated by 16mm wide orange band. Victory Medal - The medal is bronze disc 36mm in diameter with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1918', all surrounded by a laurel leaf. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wided has two rainbow design with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges, moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet.The recipients name, rank and unit are impressed on the bottom edge of the medals - Lieut F Barratt AIF

10570 South African (Boer) War Memorial Bendigo. The monument commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action while serving in the South African (Boer) War. It is a bronze statue of a soldier on a granite base. Leader (Melbourne), 19 November 1904. “There was a large assemblage on the afternoon of 11th November, when the ceremony of unveiling the soldiers' memorial statue was performed by Brigadier-General Gordon in the presence of a muster of branches of the defence forces. The statue, which is in bronze, is mounted on a massive granite base, on the foot of which is the following inscription: — "Bendigo's tribute to the memory of the Australian soldiers who, in the South African war of 1899 - 1902 gave their lives for Queen and Empire. The statue was modelled by Mr. J. Walker, a young Bendigonian, who has been studying for two or three years under Mr. A. T. Woodward art instructor at the local school of mines.“ Ola Cohn recalled in her autobiography meeting John Walker as a sculpture student at the Bendigo School of Mines and that he had later received the commission for the Boer War Memorial although she neglects to mention its location. John Walker was born in Bendigo and first studied sculpture at the Bendigo School of Art. Walker, then went to England to study at the Royal College of Art London, and in Paris at the Académie Colarossi and Julian Academy. John Walker worked as a sculptor in both Bendigo and West Brunswick before turning to chicken farming in the Bendigo suburb of White Hills. The photo of A. T. Pattinson was taken by George Leake Massingham, a professional photographer, who had seven children, one of whom died at birth. After arriving in Australia from England, he established himself as a travelling photographer, an occupation he continued after his marriage. He travelled throughout country Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales, setting up studios along the way. Letters and photo from and to Mrs Wilson, eldest daughter of Mr Arthur T. Pattinson who was a model for the Boer War sculpture. 10570a A black and white photo of Trooper Arthur T. Pattinson restored by BHS Volunteers. 10570b The original photo as sent by Mrs Wilson to Harold Curnow (Bendigo Historical Society) in 1962. The photo is mounted on heavy brown cardboard and has an old catalogue number of "P680" inscribed on it. The cardboard is torn and held together with sticky tape. On the front in italics is printed G.L. Massingham, Bendigo. 10570c Notes on the rear of the photo from Mrs Wilson state that "the photo is of Arthur T. Pattinson (Rusty), an Australian Light Horse trooper who served in the Boer War. The Boer War Memorial in Pall Mall Bendigo represents a trooper on guard. The sculptor was Jack Walker who used Pattinson as a model, and it is regarded as an excellent likeness." 10570d A letter from Harold Curnow back to Mrs Wilson on Jan 4th, 1963, acknowledging receipt of the photo and a letter received, noting the significance of the historical information. 10570e Handwritten letter 29/11/1962 from Mrs Wilson to Mr Curnow introducing herself as Mr. Pattinson's eldest daughter and answering the letter he wrote to her father. She mentions the bad health of her parents. Arthur modelled for the statue at least two to three times per week in a studio on the top floor of a building in Bull St. He was the original model to the best of her knowledge. Another model possibly Mr P. Handmear may have sat as a model for renovations (*). The rifle was a light horse rifle issued to Pattinson as he was still serving in 1904. Arthur and Handmear were boys together and very close. * Note - the plaster model was repaired prior to casting in metal. 10570f An obituary notice: 18/11/64 "On Nov. 17 at Frankston, Emma, wife of the late A. T. Pattinson (Rusty), late of Bendigo. 10570g Letter Nov. 20th, 1962, from Harold Curnow to Mr Arthur T. Pattinson, Kent St., Mornington, Vic. "Dear Mr Pattinson, Last week your brother, Brit., whom I have known for many years, supplied the Bendigo Advertiser with some interesting information regarding your role as the model for the late Jack Walker when he was making the statue for the Boer War Memorial here. Yesterday however, another claimant to the distinction of being the model was advanced in the Bendigo Advertiser by Mr Richard Marshall, of Moran Street, Bendigo who said that the soldier's model was Phillip Handmear. I understand that your brother has sent the newspaper cuttings on to you. When he called to see me yesterday, he suggested that I write to you for further particulars. Can you recall the discussion you had with Jack Walker when he approached you about acting as the model and do you remember how many times you posed for him, and whether the work was done in the house, in the yard, or in one of the outbuildings at Moran Street? In short, any details at all. At this point in time we are considering an interesting facet in Bendigo's history, so any seemingly unimportant incidents could really be useful if we knew about them. Have you any old newspaper cuttings mentioning your name in connection with the memorial? Do you remember any remarks that passed between you and Jack Walker during the long sessions you must have put in on this work? This could be very important. And do you recall where the rifle came from? Did you or Jack Walker borrow it from the military authorities? Back in 1934 Jack Walker recalled having had to pull the plaster model down and remake it when he discovered it was slightly off-balance and was slowly toppling forward. He told me he had to get his model to pose again. Do you know anything about this? Could it have been that he got Mr. Handmear in for the final stage of the work? That, of course, would apply only if you were not available. Incidentally, I never heard of Mr Handmear until I saw his name in yesterday's "Advertiser". In any case I intended contacting your brother or you to enquire whether any member of your family has an old photograph of you in your Boer War uniform, that is, one taken about the time of or just after the Boer War. I am sure that members of the Bendigo Branch of the Royal Historical Society would be most interested to see it. I hope you will have the time and inclination to consider the many points I have raised in this letter because the subject has aroused a lot of interest in Bendigo. Items in the collection relating to ARTHUR GEORGE HOLLEY no 13556 RAN Refer cat no 2134 for his service record. The photographs are from his personal album, but have not been traced to any available online archive, so provenance has not been established. They are likely a mixture of personal, commercial and official naval photography. Further research may provide more information at a later time. Reginald George Worcester (1903-1972) was a highly regarded obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Between 1930 and 1933, Worcester was the Medical Superintendent at the Royal Women's Hospital. He obtained his MRCOG in England in 1935, and on his return to Australia was appointed as a university tutor in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 1939, he was appointed as the honorary gynaecologist to outpatients at the Royal Women's Hospital. Worcester served with the AIF during World War II as C.O. of the 17th Field Ambulance in Darwin and as A.D.M.S., Northern Territory Force, and the 2nd/9th Australian Army Corps from 1942 to 1943. His major war service, however, was undertaken in Borneo and Moratai, commanding the 2nd/1st Australian C.C.S. and the 2nd/9th Australian General Hospital. Worcester acquitted himself admirably during the war, with company commander Hubert Smith praising his contribution in no uncertain terms: " His [Worcester's] success as C.O. of a Field Ambulance resulted from a complete understanding of what the unit should be able to do in the transportation of casualties in the field, as well as of the usual medial functions. He organized both with efficiency and at all times difficult decisions were made with humility and good humour. The personal qualities which made him such a calm and considerate consultant never left him, even in the most dangerous and trying circumstances of war." Worcester's time in the army greatly affected his health, but despite this he was able to build a strong and reputable practice upon his return to Australia. As outlined by Arthur Hill, Worcester " was appointed in turn to the following important posts: Honorary Outpatient Obstetrician and Inpatient Gynaecologist to the Women’s Hospital (1946-1948); Honorary Gynaecologist to Prince Henry’s Hospital (1946-1963); Guest Examiner in London for the R.C.O.G. (1953); Examiner in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1957-1964); Visiting Gynaecologist to the Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg 1963- 1967); and first Victorian Members’ representative (1947-1950) and later Fellows’ Representative (1953-1960) on the Australian (Regional) Council of the R.C.O.G. To these posts he brought the benefits of clear thinking and critical awareness. In 1949 he was elected F.R.C.O.G." In early 1967, Worcester suffered a hemiplegia which left him with an impaired gait and paralysed his right hand. Although unable to do major surgery, he returned to part-time practice by September 1967. His ill-health persisted though, and he was retired from practice in 1970. There are two locks on the top of the case, and a metal clasp on either side to fasten the bag closed. The case is embossed with the text 'R.G. WORCESTER' on top, in a position between the two locks and below the handle at bottom centre. The inside of the case is lined with a canvas bag that is buttoned to the case with press studs.
