This lanyard was owned by Matthew Calvitto. Matthew moved to Woodend with his family at the age of one. He commenced his career in the 56th Battalion Army Reserve unit. In 1999 or early 2000 he volunteered to join the regular Army. He was posted to the 6th Royal Australian Army Regiment, D company. His initial training was at either Shaulwater Bay or Conundra. After his training he served for 6 months in Timor, in either the second or third rotation. Matthew and the other members of the D Company received battle honours. Matthew was their forward scout, as well as a marksman, which you need to qualify for every year.As an item that belonged to Matthew Calvitto, a local Woodend veteran who received battle honours for his service in Timor, this lanyard has social and historic significance. The provenance of the item is know as it was donated by family members. The item is also represenantive of a type of military lanyard that was issued to Army personnel during the late 20th century. Part of a photo album (Cat.No. 01588), with a photo of Donovan Joynt and Queen Elizabeth II reading from a pamphlet he is holding. Another copy of this photo is marked as 17 March 1977, it is believed to when the Queen visited Royal Park. It is unknown who the veteran on the right is. Queen Elizabeth visited Melbourne as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of Australia and attended a children's rally in Royal Park wearing this outfit. A crowd of 18,000 people greeted her. Footage of the visit can be seen in National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA-ID 44325). A badge that was produced to promote a Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle ride around Australia in 1996 in support of Legacy. An article in Trove shows a VetAffairs newsletter in July 1996 saying that 110 Vietnam veteran bikers spent 46 days in May and June 1996 riding over 14,000 kms to connect with veterans around the country. The Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle Club organised the ride to raise awareness for Legacy who was looking after more than 122,000 widows and 2,000 children throughout Australia. The symbol of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. Photos include the President David Ford speaking to the crowd and some of the junior Legatees with disabilities. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. The guests were entertained by The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble and the MC was David Mann from Radio 3AW." See also 00989, 00990 and 00992. A file copy of a letter sent from Legatee Rob Allison to Robert Bowring (6th November 2000) in answer to a request regarding the origins of the first Dawn Service. Legatee Rob Allison signed himself as the Chairman, Advisory Tradition and History Committee. To research his response he consulted the AWM and summarised the content in the letter and enclosed four articles. Unfortunately the four articles sent to Robert Bowring are not included here. L/- Rob Allison makes reference to information obtained from Dr Richard Reid (historian at the Australian War Memorial and then the Commonwealth Branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs). Also Rob Allison makes reference to Lyn Witheridge (Australian War Memorial and later with the Centenary Federation Secretariat). He was addressing the rumour that there was a Dawn Service held in Albany WA in 1914 when the first convoy in WW1 from Australia was about to sail from Albany. The letter also makes reference to a gathering at Toowoomba QLD on Anzac morning 1919, however that rumour suggest that flowers were placed on returned soldiers graves, L/- Allison cast doubt about the placing of flowers on graves of returned service personnel, because only Major General Bridges and the Australian Unknown Soldier were the only two WW1 troops killed in action, to be returned to Australia.A record that members of the public approached Legacy with questions about military and post war history. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the Legacy Anzac Biscuit Bake Off, the opening of the Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre, and a planting of a Lone Pine seedling at Cobram Secondary College. Plus photos of our programs such as the Student Anzac ceremony, Path of the Horse family day, the walking group, the stamp ladies, adults with a disability program days, widows club gatherings. The Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre on the 3rd floor of Legacy House was opened on the 13 April 2021. It provides the veterans and their families a safe haven to access essential support services such as advocacy, case management and referral pathways whilst inviting them to relax within a 'club' like environment equipped with lounging and children's play areas, and both kitchen and bathroom facilities. It was named in honour of an Australian Army nurse who was the lone survivor of the Bangka Island massacre, and who dedicated her life to nursing. The exceptional portrait of Vivian Bullwinkel on the cover was painted by George Petrou. R.S.L. is the Returned and Services League of Australia, a member based charity founded in 1916, and the largest veterans' charity in Australia. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. They have a commemorative service each year on 25th April, ANZAC Day.The Mt Beauty RSL committee members in 1949 is a list of people living in Mt Beauty at the time and who were working as a support team for veterans and their families.
